The three-day show at the Phoenix Convention Center is expected to draw nearly 60,000 people to the city's new convention hall. The place was packed Friday, and some exhibitors expected even more people today. "It's the largest convention in Phoenix Convention Center history," said Cynthia Weaver, spokeswoman for the center. There was a series of speeches by conservative politicians at US Airways Arena on Friday afternoon. And there was a swarm of people at the trade show, where people can pick up a gun and look it over the same way as checking out a cell phone at an electronics store. They're attached to the displays with a cord and are not loaded. People looked them over and pulled the triggers, creating steady clicking sounds around the displays of the big manufacturers. No guns were for sale. However, lots of logo clothing was being snapped up from the manufacturers and at the big NRA store. About 40 people lined up at the Glock display to have their pictures taken with "Gunny" R. Lee Ermey, who played a sergeant in Full Metal Jacket. Nearby, some of the people demonstrating Glocks were bouncing them off the floor to demonstrate their reliability. One of the guys getting his picture taken was sporting a T-shirt saying, "I'm a bitter clinger," a reference to a campaign speech by President Obama. At another display, a pregnant woman pushing a stroller hefted a handgun. This is the 18th NRA convention for Rowan Kloppe of St. Louis. He said he likes checking out all of the merchandise in the displays but would still come even if it wasn't there. "I'm mainly here to show support for the Second Amendment," he said. Glenn Tolhurst of Silver City, N.M., said he and his brother, Bruce, were looking around for shooting accessories. Both said they're worried about things like banks and car companies being taken over by the government. "The government doesn't know how to run a business," Glenn Tolhurst said.

Yea, no surprise there. The assult-style rifle I special-ordered in November was supposed to be delivered within 4 to 5 months, and when i called last week to see what the deal was, they told me it could be another 8 to 10 months. Seems the factory is working triple shifts, but can't keep up with the demand.

What maybe? Depending on the state for protection is laughable. They have no ability to or responsibility for preventing crimes. j

Yeah, I stopped in at a gun shop in Marin County last month to chat them up about gun laws in Frisco in case I move there, and the shelves behind the counter were half empty. No .45 ACP, no .357, a few boxes of .38 Special, but man. You can't buy handgun ammo in Marin to save your life, or at least you couldn't that week. I think when my Panther LRC-308 is finally delivered, I'm going to stock up on a couple thousand rounds of 7.62 ammo from one of those websites, just to play it safe.

hmmmmm.....Has anyone seen any difference in the protection of citizens inside the U.S.?.....just curious....is there some unknown army of thugs hiding somewhere that I am unaware of?....some increase in violent crime?....just have to love paranoia....

It's because NRA members are dumber than the proverbial box of rocks (or fence post, take your pick). They are some of the biggest sheep on the planet. All it takes is for someone to say "Obama is gonna take your guns" and they all go running off on cue to buy more. When I was growing up we had more guns in the house than people. All of us had a rifle and shotgun, plus a couple of pistols were hanging around. We've always had guns and always will. I enjoy shooting. Do there actually need to be some better controls on what goes on at some gun shows? Absolutely. The Chicken Little, sky is falling approach by the NRA is absurd.

Nice of you to determine what everyone else needs. Here's the problem with the scenario: if we're all wrong and Obama doesn't try to exact some sort of sweeping gun control then we're all paranoid. If we're right... the left couldn't care less because they've already determined that we don't need them and they'd gladly give up the second amendment tomorrow. As long as we can do stem cell research life is good.

It's a great sales gimmick: wait for a dem president, start the rumors flying about he's going to take your guns away, and watch the sales skyrocket. It's right up there with price gouging on gas just before the Iraq war started. Amazing how many gun nuts fall for this crap!

Mike, I was in the U.S. Coast Guard and that's what we did, arrest drug smugglers in the Mona pass and the rest of the Carribean. We even got one ship off the coast of New Jersey one time. And until he gets total control over that Mexican border we'll continue to have druggies, criminals and illegal aliens entering our country over that border. If you've been watching the News lately you can see that things are rapidly deteriorating along the border due to inaction by the feds. Obama has been in office since Jan. and we're halfway through May already and he hasn't done anything yet it appears. Are we going to have another four years of Bush policies as far as that Mexican border goes? Mike, I'm hungry for the "Change" that Obama promised us! "Where's the beef!" Mike, I'm becomming a little concerned. So far everything he's done is fresh out of the Bush playbook! We need TROOPS on that border not more laws or edicts that no-one cares about. Mexico is not our "friend!"

I don't think it's so much a fear of increasing crime as it is a fear of increasingly strong restrictions on gun ownership. Some of us who've been thinking for a while of purchasing certain types of weapons feel it would be prudent to get them now, in case we can't get them later. I mean, face it, some of the democrats in Congress have made no secret of the fact that they favor very restrictive gun control laws, and they are now the party in power. And they have a president who made a couple of vague, ambiguous campaign promises to reassure gun owners, but has a historical record of some pretty strong anti-gun statements and positions. In fact, he is specifically on record as supporting a ban on the sale of some of the weapons we are now buying. For some of us, it's just a matter of making sure all our bases are covered.

For me, the question of whether or not I need it is not even relevant. I want it. That's as far as it needs to go, as far as I'm concerned. Doubtful and this is a baseless comment. In fact the new Drug Czar has stated that there will be no more war on citizens. This administration has more of a leaning to see some drugs legalized. As to the OP, a scare of a ban on weapons has always increased gun sales. I do not want to see the sale of weapons limited, but I am all for a requirement of some kind of safety course to aquire them. Just in our neighborhood, some idiot did not check the chamber, and fired a round through the floor of their home into the basement, where their UM's bedrooms are.
