There's nothing like a kidney stone that teaches you the importance of water and to lay off the soda.

You'll feel better when you'll pass it. But you'll also be in shock when you see something the size of a sand grain can cause all that pain.

Actually based on the measurements they gave me it is about 1/4 inch in size.  Yes still small, but not a grain of sand by any means.

Interestingly enough, I haven't been drinking as much water over the last month.  It's usually all I drink and tons of it.  I had thought about that having some effect.

Today I have only the pain I live with everyday due to my back injury.  I know that the stone hasn't passed, but maybe I got lucky and it dissolved.  Not likely, but it does happen.

In the meantime, I'm enjoying having only my "usual" levels of pain.  Bought myself a little charcoal barbeque grill yesterday (bargain at 8 bucks) and found some nice shrimp on sale, so I'm gonna marinate it, skewer it and throw that shrimp on the barbie!

Thanks for all the advice and the kind words.  Likely, I'm going to be adding some fresh lemon to my water (don't know why I hadn't thought of that Holly, since I like the taste).

Hi LafayetteLady,

I had a friend that had kidney stones and she ate lots of asparagus, and then i believe drank Coke, and somehow that 'melted' the kidney stones.

I had them when i was six months pregnant and landed myself in the hospital with them because the pain was so bad, it almost set me into premature labor.

I hope you are better soon.

Sorry you are going through this!  I had a kidney stone some years ago and I know the pain!  However, when I got to the hospital I was shocked at what the ER doctor asked me... He asked if I drink a lot of iced tea.  I used to drink nearly half a gallon a day!  Then he asked me if I was eating more ice cream recently and I thought the guy was psychic!  He told me the two was a great reciepe for the stones!  http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/542808/

Well, the doc gave me a cone-shaped sieve and told me to wait to pass the stone.  The sieve was to catch it.  Asked if he needed to examine the stone and he said no.  I wondered if I was supposed to catch it so I could like make a necklace out of it and decided I really didn't need to catch the damned thing and didn't have to pee in a stupid sieve.  Pain stopped as abruptly and it started so assumed I had passed it and now watch my consumption of iced tea and don't keep ice cream in the house.

OP, my oldest child suffers horribly from kidney stones...she averages 2 a month.  the docs have collectd the passed stones and told her that they're made of some kind of acid found in nuts and sodium. she's been told not to drink soda as well.  she cuts back on what she's told but they still come.  i think some are more susceptible.  we even had one doc tell us that she should slam a 6 pack of beer cause it will dull the pain and push the buggers through.  (not very responsible medical advice given to a then 17 year old.)

when she can manage the pain she takes hot, hot showers and stays moving as much as possible, she says that helps them from getting "stuck" and helps them pass faster, and drinks lots of cranberry juice.

i've never had one, but i've seen the pain they inflict on others.  good luck to you and hugs.
