Ok along with all my ongoing health issues, today I got to spend several hours in the emergency room crippled with pain to find out that I have a kidney stone.  Needless to say, I'm a bit cranky over the whole thing (after spending the morning in Court with a friend).

So anyone have any knowledge or ideas of how to alleviate the pain beyond all the lovely drugs I have in my possession?

Trust me when I say...I feel your pain. I passed a kidney stone 2 months ago...ended up in the ER doubled over in pain after a 20 minute drive that seemed to take forever.

Be sure to drink LOTS of water. The idea is to pass the little sucker. Lucky you for having access to pain meds, I'm green with envy mainly because I didn't.

You need to find out what kind of kidney stone it is in order to decide what kind of preventative measures will be taken to avoid a repeat performance.

http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/pubs/stones_ez/index.htm This may help with understanding and be sure to discuss any diet changes that may be needed with your doctor.

Good luck and feel better soon.

I passed one myself awhile back, and had to calm the pain with medication. In the beginning I thought it was just some back pain (I had just helped some friends move), and was using heat. I thought that had helped, but was later assured by Dr's that it was all in my head. I do feel for you, it was the sharp kind of pain that made me throw up, and i hope for speedy recovery!

I just passed one and they suck. I have 3 more kicking around and this last one was the 3rd in 3 years. Flomax helped alot....it's for prostate problems but I was told it helps open up your tubes...worked pretty good for me this time. Other than that nothing but the drugs really helped. Sorry and I hope it passes soon.

If it blocks your kidney and the kidney becomes distended, you can experience the joys of nephrostomy tubes and jj stents. When the kidney shrinks back to a reasonable size, lithotripsy.

Hopefully, it will pass quickly and as painlessly as possible.

Gee, aren't you a bright shiny spot on a horrible day?!  Seriously, I do appreciate the warning though.

I had one nearly 10 years ago and this is the first recurrence since.  I'm not expecting for it to pass honestly.  It's 6.33 mm which as I understand it is about 1/4 inch.  At least this trip to the ER was much less traumatic than the first.  That was like a comedy of errors with everything that went wrong.

I'm honestly not sure, but I don't think prostate meds are recommended for us female types, but I appreciate the info.  They prescribed Pyridium (sp?) which is supposed to do the same thing.  It also turns your urine an amazing shade of orange.

I seriously injured my back in December and just had the first lumbar epidural injection on Monday and I was really terrified that the pain was related to that, so I was actually kind of relieved and glad to find out it was "just" a kidney stone.

Because of the back injury and now this, I'm so pumped up on meds it's almost funny and a wonder that I can still see my computer screen!  Tomorrow I call the urologist and basically schedule having it removed.  I don't do well with the pain.  My urologist is really nice, and kind of cute which makes for an interesting situation, lol.

CarrieO, I'm SO sorry you had to go through it with no pain meds.  I think I might kill someone if I had to do that.

Last time, the doctor told me to drink a lot of lemonade for prevention, much better than cranberry juice, something about the citric acid.  And NOT real lemonade, but something like Country Time.  I'm glad that I haven't had such frequent recurrence, and I think that the decreased activity with the back injury might be a contributing factor.

On the up side, my 15 year old abandoned his girlfriend for the day to be by my side.  Not fond of her and pissing her off was a bonus, lol.  Geez, am I really cranky or what?

Thanks for all the info.  I appreciate it and hope more comes along.

Oh lord girl! There is no such thing as "just" a kidney stone! I always have what they call gravel, little stones, but have had the experience I quoted above a number of times. Even my doc said he had seen grown men cry with the pain of kidney stones and, rightly, he had told them they were as close to childbirth pain as they are able to get. I've experienced both and quite honestly, I'd take the childbirth any day of the week, at least you know that has an ending sooner rather than later!!

I was told to knock off drinking tea and coffee and eating *gulp* chocolate. I managed the first two, not so successful with the chocolate though. Orange juice is also supposed to be good for the prevention of some kinds of stones and a lower protein and sodium diet can help.

I really do feel for you and those pain meds (I was on Vicodin) can be a bugger to stop taking. Honestly, I hope this never happens to any of you again.

Having no previous experience with epidural injections, I was terrified that something had gone horribly wrong and I was going to end up paralyzed from the waist down!  So yes, in this case there is such a thing as "just" a kidney stone.  Some part of my head knew the epidural couldn't be the problem, but since 10 years have gone by since my first and only other kidney stone, it took a while for me to start thinking about it.

It just keeps getting better and better talking to you!  Give up chocolate?  Red meat?  Impossible!

Shoot, with my back, Vicodin was a long time ago.  I have Dilaudid, which isn't working all that great.  Of course since I have to go to the doctor in a bit, I haven't been able to take any today.  Right now, dealing with my HMO is causing more pain than anything else.  They also gave me Cipro to prevent any possible infection so as a bonus I'm currently protected against anthrax as well.  Isn't that comforting? hee hee.

Drink lots of water and cranberry juice, rest and take the pain meds as needed until it passes. I have had them twice now and they are the worst pain imaginable! Take care of yourself.

Lots of water just aids the flushing.  If the stone is big, it is going to hurt.
Drink lemon juice and olive oil about 4-5 times a day for a couple of days as well as lots of water.  It rocks.  It's disgusting, but it works.  Try and drink it through a straw and clean your teeth after, because of the acid.

Cranberry juice won't help you in the now, but it will help in the long run.  Take suppliments or drink it everyday.  It's great for the urine infection you can get with it.

Take the drugs and sleep and get tons of water, tea, and juices. Other than that, occupy your mind and be as comfortable as best you can. Mine was September 17, 2004, 3:36 am. I went to the hospital in agony, and luckily, there was no wait. It was terrible. That morphone sure was good! Mine passed a day and a half later, but the pain I faced was only a full day after, though I was soar for about a week.

I do feel for you! Best wishes.

Good luck,
My first one took 3 weeks to pass but it was weirdly shaped - like an hour glass with spikes. about 2.5 weeks to pass from kidney to bladder. (Ask God to just kill me twice and get it over with since I had no insurance and was not getting the good drugs.) when it did i thought it was out. but a few days later I was taking a leak at the office when the flow almost stopped and light blood and pain started (nothing like unrine in a open wound) a few minutes later out it popped!

Really? I've worn contacts since middle school, I'm almost 45 now and my eyes are still brown.

Glad you admit it tastes disgusting.  That was all I was thinking as I read it.  I honestly don't know if I could keep that down, but I will definately consider trying it.

This is the best evidence of how excruciating they are, isn't it?

Well, today isn't so bad, but of course, we are just waiting for it to be on the move again.  My plans for the weekend are to do just as everyone suggests.  Take drugs, sleep and rest.

A suggestion for those of you without health insurance....before I had insurance I had gone to a large teaching hospital nearby and applied for charity care.  While there was no prescription converage, because it is a teaching hospital, not only was regular general healthcare available but also various specialist.  During the year that I was on the program, a lot of long term issues were resolved at absolutely no cost to me.  ER visits, surgery was all covered by the charity care.

CountrySong, the "good drugs" are frighteningly cheap.  The generic dilaudid was 3.42 for 12 pills.  Could probably get 30 of them for less than 10 bucks.  If you can't get the charity care, do what you can to get the $75 or so dollars to go to the local "urgent care" facility and get the script for the pain meds.  But check out the charity care option.  Most hospitals  have some kind of program like that.

Am pretty sure that you won't be able to pass a 6 mm stone. Chances are you will need a cystoscopy and a stent placed, and a lithotripsy.

The stent will prevent urine backing up in your ureter and causing kidney damage,  and dilate the ureter so the stone fragments will pass easier, and the lithotripsy will (hopefully) break it into passable sizes. The lithotripsy may take several treatments to get the stone into appropriate gravel.

If you do an online search you should be able to find an article from the British urological society about lemonade and decreasing the incidence of kidney stones. The way I read it, the lemonade had to be made from real lemons.

Congratulations on being an official human oyster. Pity your stones aren't real pearl.

According to what I've read and been told, 6mm is the top end of what will pass on it's own.  I admit I'm not one of those "let nature take it's course" types.  Give me drugs, knock me out, and get rid of the thing.  That's my feelings.

Last time, I really don't know what the doctor did, but I know when he was done the stone was out (he showed it to me), and a stent was put into prevent swelling of the ureter from interfering with urination.  Removing that was supposed to be a 20 second procedure that turned in to 20 minutes because of my anxiety attacks.  Kind of hard to self manage my anxiety/panic when the doctor turns to the nurse and says "hand me the one with the teeth" WHAT?!  No lie, that is exactly what he said.  Now while some of you here might like something like that, I'm from the school of thought that nothing with "teeth" should be going in there.

Now there is not a single urologist in two counties (I live on the border between) in the HMO.  Today my primary was supposed to be submitting an "urgent authorization" for out of network, but of course, it was far too late to see anyone today even IF they approved it quickly.  Add to that the holiday weekend and I will be lucky if I get any kind of approval before Tuesday or Wednesday.

I did manage to find out though that if I went through the ER again and they admitted me and had the on call urologist remove the stone, then they would cover it.  So that is probably the way I'm going to go.  At the moment, I'm not feeling too bad.  Could be the pyridium and dilaudid, but as long as I'm not screaming in pain, doesn't matter to me how it happens.  With everything that has been going on, I haven't really gotten much sleep, so my plan for tonight and tomorrow is to get some of that.  Actually fell asleep at the doctor's office today, that is how tired I was.

ETA:  Damn if they were pearl and I could learn how to shit diamonds, my problems would all be solved!

There's nothing like a kidney stone that teaches you the importance of water and to lay off the soda.

You'll feel better when you'll pass it. But you'll also be in shock when you see something the size of a sand grain can cause all that pain.

This correct. The orange will stain anything it comes in contact with, panties will be the worse, it's recommend that you wear pantie liners when taking this drug.
