If you travel... to protect yourself... go to the link I have in my other post and get a bottle of the spray cedar oil... or best yet spray.  Spray the bed, your things and yourself if you have to.  Then make sure when you get home, to isolate everything in zip lock bags you can buy in a large size and treat everything before you bring it into your house.  Also spray your car because they can go anywhere.

You might check the bed in the motel... use a flash light and look in the tiny crevices of the mattress.

The bugs seem to love five a.m...  between three a.m. I started seeing them.. but five a.m. seems to be the feeding hour.

if it is that intense then one could get it at a laundramat.

sunlight is good.

I thought the modern mattresses stopped all that.

from WIKI,

Due to the difficulty in eliminating the bugs from the room or dwelling, the (suspected) bed is isolated, thus removing the insects' food source - humans. Bedbugs cannot cross petroleum jelly and have difficulty climbing metal or glass, hence each of the bed legs is put in a tin can (the bottom of which is thickly coated with petroleum jelly to avoid movement from the bed to the hiding places. Although bedbugs cannot fly or jump, they have been observed climbing a higher surface in order to then fall to a lower one, such as climbing a wall in order to fall onto a bed. Hence alternatively, a double-sided sticky tape (such as carpet tape) is applied around each bed leg, or to keep each leg on a plastic furniture block in a tray of water.
  • Domestic treatment
Use of steam or by spraying rubbing alcohol on any visible insects is done to effectively rid bed frames of adult bedbugs and eggs, although it does not serve as a permanent treatment. Small steam cleaners have been very effective for local treatment.

They can climb up drapes or bedding, the walls etc and then drop down on to furniture or the bed.  When you are breathing... they are attracted to it.  Isolating beds isn't enough.  They have to be treated and then encased.  It is like the cycle of the bug, egg... even if one dies in eighteen months because it wasn't fed, it can lay eggs and they hatch and can live another eighteen months.. the cycle means... you can't just remove something.  If they take the bed or furniture... which they could be in dressers or the tv in the room... anywhere... they take these things out... they would have to still be treated until the bugs were gone.

From my research the small steamers are not hot enough and do not work long enough to really clean a room out because the bugs can run.  This is why I chose the cedar oil because it shuts down their breathing.  Plus the smaller unit steamers are wet which can lead to mold problems.  You have to get a special kind that prevents mold.

ouch.  This week I just bought 6 t-shirts at a thrift store.   I have 4 beds- 3 couches and tons of clutter.  I read that each day one should be throwing out junk.

Those bugs look like termites.   The flies are bad already.

If you buy used clothing... put it in a zippered bag when you are at store because you don't want them in your car... bring it home and dump in washer and then dry.  You will kill bugs and/or eggs. Get rid of the bag!

I start to see the health risk of reading the message boards here...I was really looking forward to my holidays you know...I have 3 of them, starting on 1st June, 14th June and 1st July...I am "really" encouraged now to go

First Camille informs us that Myron moved out (he surely is already waiting for me at the hotel), then yahoo informs me about those ones here:

which ARE originally from Canary Islands (guess where ALL my three holidays will be) and now you come with the bed bugs...anyone else who wants to scare me off???

Oh no!  I am so sorry!  But you can protect yourself using some of the info here and elsewhere!  That cedar oil treatment is not too expensive and you can spray it anywhere.  You can also use those big zip lock bags to protect your clothing.  Don't forget the suitcase!  Wearing perfume runs them off too.  Just isolate your things when you get home until you know they are bug or egg free.

Don't be afriad... just be cautious.

Despite this... I hope you have a great time!

Lockit,

I am so sorry you are going through this type of hell. I live in Houston and we are having a huge problem here, and at the transitional housing program where I work. They spray one room and the bugs show up in the next room. We may have to bring in the infectious disease folks as the bedbugs are rampant.
Here's a joke for you...I'm sitting here in a t-shirt and knickers reading your thread; off comes the t-shirt, on goes my tri-focals and out comes the flashlight. LOL. I work with homeless families and "oh my goodness." I'm going to get the cedar oil tomorrow, and those wonderful ziplock bags to put at my door. I'll have to take cedar oil to work to put in my office. Do you know if Raid will kill them on chairs? Folks are in and out of my office all day long...and we thought we were the superior beings.

hiyas pahunkboy,

Regards,
dovie

Thank you Dovie.  I wouldn't suggest raid as I don't know if it kills them... I don't think so, but it is toxic maybe to some who are there.  The ceder oil company is right in TX so you might give them a call and ask what might be best.  The best yet is what I used and it doesn't stain anything... isn't toxic to animals or people and leave's a nice scent.  It can be a bit oily at first though.  They have something you can spary on your body and is used by the military for those in sandy area's and dealing with flea's.  I think they would answer whatever your questions are.  They were very nice when I talked to them and it wasn't a sales gimmic kind of thing.  Just down to earth people who want to help.

As for the shelter... you can try to cedar oil treatment and I would think it the best option, but I have read where in a huge building, people tented the building like with termites and they had to use more of the chemical to kill them.  I don't know how well it worked... I would think the cedar oil would be the best bet and doing all the rooms at the same time with the fogger... or you can just do the spray in each room, but do them all... it will cut down on them, but won't do away with them all.

So far... we haven't seen any more... so I am hoping for sure!  Good luck with your situation!  Oh... they don't jump... they must climb up you or drop on you somehow.  So if you have scent on legs, arms and head or neck.. they might leave you alone.  But I would ask the company if the spray the military uses would help you.

I am wondering... if you get Fema funds... you might see if they can help with the cost of doing the building.  I don't know what all they cover, but it is worth a try.  You might even see if the director or someone could talk to the cedar oil company and see if they could donate some help or oil as a tax deduction.  Anyone leaving the shelter could be spreading them so it might be worth while to see if you can get some help to do the whole building.  Good luck!

hmmm...wondering if fleabusters powder will work with begbugs. The powder dries out the fleas(desicant)...thinking it should work with other bugs too.

I don't know about that.  You could call whoever makes the powder and maybe they would know.  Just make sure it isn't bothersom to people or lil hands if you know what I mean.
