YourhandMyAss -> Has any one else ever gotten hives for no reason? (5/23/2009 12:01:33 PM)

And I mean no apparent reason, every one keeps telling me something different must be causing my hives, and I swear I am tired of saying no nothing has changed, You name it and no it's not changed. And last time this happend I went to the doctor and the allergist and they found nothing wrong with me, and they even said that THEY had no clue and couldn't do anything and how long I could suffer like this was un known it could last a few days longer or it could be several months longer.

Fuck places I don't even have welts itches, my hands and my feet mostly, are itching and no welts yet.And my skin feels weird and tight. I called the doctor but it's Saturday, they won't see you unless they call you and consult with you first, and then they'll determine if you need to come in as an emergency, and they wont' have anything available being so late in the day, because they're calling me at 3,  and it'll be the same with sunday and monday  I assume, monday being a holidday.

Yup. This is exactly what happened to me, which has led to a diagnosis of an 'autoimmune condition' without any name. Check out my previous hives thread (give it a search, it's somewhere).

Though, now they're starting to wonder if I developed an allergy to sunlight [:'(]

aravain, If it's been more than like 6 months  ago under the search feature on your name it won't show up. I tried looking for posts I made like 9 months ago an they must of changed it cause posts that are far back won't come up/.

Hives can be caused by so many things.  It could be an allergic reaction to something, and they can also be caused by stress.  Might be something you aren't consciously stressed about.

Take benedryl or other antihistimine to counter the itching.  Oatmeal baths.  Cortisone cream on the areas.  The more you stress the worse it can get.  Welts might not always show up.  If it becomes too bothersome, go to the ER.  They will run tests and maybe have more insight.  You could have gotten bitten by something and aren't even aware of it other than the hives.  There is no way to tell.  It doesn't sound like this is a frequent thing, but that doesn't mean you just have to accept it either.  Since it has re-occurred, you need to be a bit more assertive with your doctor in finding a reason.

Got hives for no reason as a kid then they stopped.  A few years ago they started again.  I learned to keep Benedryl in the medicine cabinet as well as some in the car just in case.

You haven't changed soaps or shampoo or laundry detergent? Has the brand you buy changed? Saying new and improved or twice as effective? You might want to run all your bedding, towels and clothes through the wash again with no shampoo. As well as use only a quarter cup in future. Otherwise detergent builds up in them.

littlewonder -> RE: Has any one else ever gotten hives for no reason? (5/23/2009 4:15:59 PM)

sooooo many things can cause hives...

heat
cold
food
allergies
clothing
weight loss/gain
perfumes
auto immune diseases
a myriad of other diseases
stress
insomnia
psychological problems

The list could go on and on forever

Only way to know is to try and rule out things that you think may be causing it or to wait and get the test results back from your dr.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Has any one else ever gotten hives for no reason? (5/23/2009 5:35:25 PM)

I took benedryl by mouth creams don't have any affect on the itching. Bendryl unfortunate makes me feel really crappy and lethargic for the rest of the day,  I am talking if the house was on fire I wouldn't care lethargic, so I have to be pretty desperate to take it. It's not common fortunatly. The dr prescribed oral steroids, which didn't do any good las time but maybe they'll help now, I certainly hope so after spending like an hour and 30 minutes waiting at the pharmacy.

nope, like I said it's the same thing, anything you could ask has not changed, same soap same detergent same foods, same environment same everything.   Ok well heat wise weather changes, but it doesn't seem to be linked.

Like littlewonder said, sooooo many things can cause hives. Sometimes they can show up a day or two after you're exposed to something, so it's often difficult to pinpoint what causes them.  I get them occasionally, and it's always on my hands or wrists and I notice them when I realize I'm scratching like crazy.  Lately I've been getting them most afternoons, not sure why..

Try the Benedryl Quick-Dissolve Strips.  They don't zonk me near as much as the pills do, and I keep a pack in my purse.

will have to look for those, it's been hours litterally and I am still feeling sleepy and woozy from the benedryl.

FR
For some people claritin work on hives.
It is a non-sedating antihistamine.
There have it in generic: loratadine.

If it doesn't work there are others that might work and be less sedating.
Also the sedating effects from benadryl often lessen as your body becomes accustomed to it.

Are you taking 50mgs or 25?
Maybe you could drop it down to 12.5 during the day and take more at night?

LafayetteLady -> RE: Has any one else ever gotten hives for no reason? (5/23/2009 6:59:35 PM)

angelikaJ,

You just beat me to it.  Try reducing the dose.  Maybe even buy the liquid children's version which will give you the most control over the dosing.  Honestly, the oral steroids can, for some people be too slow acting.  I completely understand the desire for immediate relief.  I have been prone to hives (caused by stress) and get it exactly where you have it now.  Hands and feet.  Itchy feet are torture.  I will go out on the pavement barefoot and just twist my feet around, it feels SOOO good.

Sometimes Benadryl will have that effect on me, sometimes it won't.  I know, it makes no sense, but really it is fitting for how my life and body works.  Anyway,  right now, what you need is relief.  Make sure someone is around just in case the house catches fire (fitting example) and let the drowsiness and lethargia take over.  Think about it this way, at least you won't be itching.  It's a long weekend and if you keep up on the benedryl whatever is causing it may pass before the weekend is over.

Trust me, I've had hives so bad, I have scratched myself until I was bleeding.  I know how bad it sucks.  That's why I said if the benadryl gives you relief, take it.  This is the ONLY circumstance I will ever say this.....take the benadryl, then "suck it up and deal" with the side effects for a couple of days.  It will be worth it.

Now stop scratching!

I take two since one doesn't help and it's 50 I believe. I could probably take one and then put gel on it.

yeah a little bit of doppyness was worth the relief, I was seriously rubbing my hands on the stucco outside the garage they itched so bad, not hard or roughly just lightly for some relief, and I sure do sympathise with any animal that itches bad enough to roll on the carpet or find something to scoot against and or rip their own fur out with biting.

Good morning!
::laughs:: Benadryl and Nyquil are the adult versions of Dimetapp for kids! I love it! I know it sounds like such a pain in the fanny but you really do have to rule every little thing out..food, soaps, stress, dust. It has to be something or if it really is nothing-the mind does do funny things with the body.

Every considered hormones? Peri-menopause? You look a bit younger than me but I started having very dry vagina and all the symptoms of a yeast infection but no infection. Years of pain-day in and day out..not being able to walk or sit or anything!!! I got tested for everything twice-even STD-s. This year I found out I am going thru peri and my hormoes are going crazy. I am on a specific birth control to regulate it and have to be re-evaluated next month for more hormone testing. It is helping but I still itch and burn sometimes. I am just saying that yeah we can go thru it real early and it can start manifesting in ways some doctors usually don't notice. Just another thing to throw into the mix. But I understand what you mean when you are so bad and it is like "ENOUGH! JUST MAKE IT GO AWAY" and just wanna cry cause no one believes you. Good luck!!
Love,
Zechriel [sm=flowers.gif]

I'm 26. I don';t think it's hormones or it'd be happening more than every 2 years. the welts are the only issue, there's no other problems so far.r
