Fair enough. I agree that a referendum is a democratic (and generally fair) method of determining the will of the majority. Its just a shame that a larger percentage of the population didn't take part in this one, if they had, then it would have been difficult to try lay the blame on any one sector. In the end, the opponents of Prop 8 have only themselves to blame, for not galvanizing their followers into voting.

As it is roughly 41% of the eligable voters voted for it, while fully 20.5% basically voted "Don't give a damn".  What the opponents of Prop 8 should focus on is the following:

1) 38.5% of eligable voters opposed the thing, which shows quite a serious amount of support for gay marriage, a solid base on which to continue to grow, and

2) Why did so many people not bother to vote. The most likely reason is that they just don't see the issue as all that important to their lives. I think that supporters of gay marriage really need to focus on that issue (as they are unlikely to convince a substantial number of those that oppose it), to try to figure out how to convince that 20% that the issue is relevant to them.

Assuming that these numbers are, at least somewhat, representative of the general population's views, then this is the section of the population that should be targeted. Rather than studying which demographic groups voted for Prop 8, gay rights groupsshould be studying which demographics didn't bother to vote, because that is the segment of the population where converts to the cause can be made.

Exactly Arpig.  If you want to make something work, you need to look at what didn't work, even though that is the least pleasurable aspect of analysis.  While it never hurts to know what worked and who supported you, all you learn from that is that continuing to do the same thing for them...you will have their support.  But...you had it anyway and while you don't want to alienate them, you need to find a way to make what didn't work for others before work for them now.

Remember in the 60's the sentiment was "a license is just a piece of paper so why get married.." Maybe we should just abolish marriage all together.

That's along the lines of my prefered solution.  Not abolishment as such, but get the state out of marriage entirely.  I don't see why the state has any business in policing people's personal relationships in the first place.

That said, it's a matter of pragmatism.  Personally, I may not be keen on marriage as it currently stands.  However, if I can get legal rights if I choose to, I think that should be the case for everybody.
