Actually...yes. Yes, you can. We all can.

I can have a cake in front of me. I've got it. I can, now, also eat it (since I've got it).

The figure of speech, properly written, is supposed to be:

You can't eat your cake and have it too.

Because, obviously, once I've already eaten it...I no longer have it.

I think the origin of the statement comes from people wanting everything with out being reasonable in their wants/needs. Its reasonable to want cake. However its unreasonable to believe once you have said cake that you also want cookies. Ie you cant have your cake and eat it too because if you eat it you will learn the cake did not satisfy you and you now need something else.

While that probably is a very good guess ... the phrase might have also have been a derivative of the line: "Let them eat cake!" which I believe was demonstrated quite clearly to have come out of the French Revolution.
