Dress up to go to the theater anymore?

A friend and I were just talking about this. Since when has it become fashionable to show up to a broadway play in jeans and a t-shirt.

Just another 'random stupidity' question.

This really bothers me too. i grew up knowing that when i went into the city(NYC) to see a show, it was expected to be dressed appropriately. Recently, some friends and i went to see a couple shows and there were people in jeans and hoodies. It was a "hot" mess.

i'm not sure what's happened, but i've seen it in lots of places. Dr's offices, taking their um's to birthday parties, job interviews, church, just about anywhere; people are dressing "down" more and more. Realizing there are special cases, (it's not about those who have little means) for most of us, there is sufficient cash to change out of the outfit you use for bush-hogging the homestead, before you go to see the touring company's production of "Jersey Boys"...just sayin'.

Yes, a friend and I commented on this not too long ago.  I wear skirts whether long or short all the time - this is something Sir requested and likes, along with red nail polish.  I love being dressed it makes you feel so much better.  I finally grew out of my jeans and sweatshirt college phase.  Oh, and my mom is thrilled.
I recently watched a old movie and bought vintage Vogue patterns.  I love the 40's skirts and jackets, even bought vintage glove patterns.

why does it matter, who are you there to see, each other or the production, where your attention should be focused.

I see this as a social expectation from centuries of the have's and have not's and one was supposed to look a certain way... god forbid if a man went out without a hat or a woman showed her ankles or walked into a place without an escort.  Social expectations of the nature of how one must dress up means that some cannot enjoy the event.  Presentable can be jeans and a shirt... unpresentable may be showing under clothing... but as far as one having to dress up to make an event special for the specail... I think not.  I avoided things like that even when I had clothing that might show I was special.

If you want to dress and enjoy it... great!  Go for it!  But don't expect other's to live to your view of what theatre is and should be.  Many years ago, the average person was not really allowed to go because their social class was not of merit.  While there are problems with how some might dress, we typically cannot continue an old social distinction that prevents those who cannot dress up, the joy, learning and experience that should be open for all to take part in.

How I might dress shouldn't affect your enjoyment of a social event.  If I can pay for it... I should be able to enjoy it, dressed up or down.  I am not saying this from only the standpoint of a poor person.  I wasn't always poor and had custom everything as an adult.  I see this more as dictating what is allowed and what shouldn't be based on economic's and old rules that needed to be done away with.

i would get that point in certain situations, but cheap B'way tickets run for about $70.00/each. These people aren't showing up in threadbare jeans and t-shirts worn from wear. They are Abercrombie Fitch and Burberry folks purposefully dressing like they're going to the mall for a pretzel.

I don't mind it, however I've been to a few confirmations and in the church ..I mean..everything's supposed to be holy etc etc etc I think there's a minimum courtesy and simply..respect NOT dressing in jeans at that event (at least not blue or torn or washout ones)  but that's one thing people have started to do more and more...and it kind of annoys me that people can't dress differently in a friggin church and I'm not even religious. This's supposed to be a special holy ceremony and I don't care if it's in a church, mosque or whatever you don't go in there as if you were coming right out of the street n decided to drop in.. I'm not asking for a friggin penguin suit with hats n wearing the finest blahblahblah but just..to look..decent
however theatres..cinemas..I don't really care

Why should we expect someone to dress for the mall or a play in a certain way?  Why do we have that expectation?  Granted... I hate the way a lot of people dress.  Hated women showing bra straps and wearing under clothing as outter or men wearing pants that hung to their knee's and showing their boxers or holes in clothing that showed me more than I cared to see, but I am not the one who decides who wears what.  But then I might go braless and show a bit of nipple that wasn't hidden by most bra's anyway... I was heathen and slut to many before it was a common thing.  Should I be banned from one place and allowed in another?  Or must I show respect for those who wouldn't dress like I might to the point of offense if I don't or their lack of enjoyment of something or other?  If the people running the event don't have a dress code... it's all good.

I typically was known for how nice I dressed and was called classy... boy would they think again the first time I opened my mouth and cussed!  And I did sometimes do that just to say hey... it shouldn't matter.  I worked at a real dive once because I was new in town and broke... I would dress some nights like I was going to a five star place.  I pulled it off... Some thought I was nuts until they saw that the next night I might be in biker wear or the next disco or the next cowboy or the next gothic.  I wear what I want, when I want and wherever I want.  I try not to be offensive, but sometimes offensive is chewing bubble gum the wrong way.

Granted, our expectations are based on socialization based on instilled" rules" that have a lot to do with class and social rank in some ways...i get that. These are the same rules however, that say it is proper to eat with a fork and knife, and not with one's hands. That we should say "Please" and "Thank you" and cut our grass in order to keep the neighborhood a pleasant one in which to live.

i see certain lagging of etiquette and niceties as far from an advancement, but rather a sad commentary of contemporary society. We are so busy trying to react to the class structure, that in many ways we forget to have "class".

See I agree there are social niceties but I am a huge champion for accessibility. I know that if I were to suggest a gallery visit or the opera or a show many of my friends would be so intimidated. The problem as I see it is that the elitism of 'high culture' needs to stop and the first step with that is allowing casual clothes, I mean don't get me wrong one of my dreams is to dress up and go to the west end but I just feel cutting out social groups needs to stop

I never been to the theater. But...

I actually like dressing up... wearing button down shirts, ties, dress wear stuff. But I got rid of most of my good stuff, and kept just my ties, when I moved south, because of the warmer temperature, and because just about everywhere I been is casual, and different interpretations of casual, so there's no need to dress up. Now I am basically wearing shorts and t-shirts all the time, rarely a button down shirt or long pants, and socks I wear occasionally.

A couple of weeks ago I went with my sister-in-law who had to take her oldest daughter to court and she (sis-in-law) wore shorts.
I wore a dress.

It depends on the show.  For Les Miserables, I wore a dress.  For Rent, I wore jeans and a nice shirt.

LOL... thanks!  I was hoping as I typed what I said that my social attitude and questioning wouldn't come across as a direct hit as well!  I heard all my life... don't forget where you come from... don't ever embarass the family... so and so in the family deserve's our continuing the family... blah, blah, blah...  I will never forget my finding hip hugger, bell bottoms and mini skirts and of course boots and almost being kicked out of the family! lol  I did get new clothes though... their kind! lol  I wanted jeans for school and they wanted... pretty pink or blue or purple dresses that no one wore to school!  And I couldn't sneak around because my grandmother knew everyone in the district!

So.. it wasn't you I was challenging... just a way of things.  I highly respect you... totally!  Hugs back!
