You have to go back a few scriptures, but 'they' are the 11 remaining apostles.

I think I know what that means. If so, those snake dancers misinterpret this line.

From my interpertation, I agree. It is not meant literally.

OP - In accordance with their faith, handlers refuse medical treatment when bitten. Nevertheless, there have been fewer than 100 confirmed deaths in the history of snake handling.
I would imagine that most of these people have some skill with snake handling just from observing then handling. Most US snakes are not that deadly or aggressive. And there can be some immunity build up. Import some sea snakes, tiapans, or kraits and the deaths would climb.
Thorn - For more of an inside look, check out Salvation on Sand Mountain. The author took up snakes at one service. According to him, only the snake and he existed, and gradually he felt his consciousness dissolving into the world. It reminded me of some meditation practises.
hum - wonder if it is anywhere close to some of the mental states we reach with S and M.

All this hate directed at these people seems like the pot calling the kettle black. How many people have died in BDSM over the years. How would "normal" people react to someone willingly being tied down, whipped, and tortured to get to subspace. (We already know that since we are still classified with the mentally ill by the psychology people.) I say let them do as they please. Maybe they are nuts but aren't we all in one way or another.

LaTigresse -> RE: '..and they shall take up serpents...' (5/31/2009 2:01:53 PM)

Just because I think a person is mentally not all there, does not mean I hate them. It simply means I think they are wacked.

I am perfectly comfortable with people thinking I am wacked.

Your thoughts and comments?

As long as no snakes are harmed and kept well would be my only concern.
As all things, there are different interpretations to such writings.

Who hates them? I went to their church, and was scared shitless at the age of 12, and I do not hate them. Many of their neighbors think they are an oar short of a good rowboat, just going in circles. Does not mean they are hated.

Hi Orion--

This church was The Church of Jesus Christ with Signs Following, and the pastor was Glenn Summerford (I believe he's still in prison after trying to kill his wife with their snakes).

I live in West Virginia and I say... who cares?  They may be crazy, but if they are adults, they should be able to consent to this.
As long as they aren't hurting me, or any children, drink all the poison you want!  more power to ya!  the gene pool needs some cleaning.

Marc2b -> RE: '..and they shall take up serpents...' (5/31/2009 6:24:01 PM)

Nutters.

That's my personal opinion.

But...

This is America so if that's what they want to do then who am I to say otherwise?

You can find several videos of snake handlers on youtube including this one.

Actually, give me a few beers or some good herb and I could jive to that music.

its all very well proving yourself with signs such as handling snakes and drinking poison, but that passage in Mark also describes the performance of other acts - casting out spirits, speaking in tongues, laying hands on the sick, as signs of those who believe. If the snake handlers dont do these other acts?

They do all of that fun stuff too.  It just looks halfway "normal" compared to snake handling.
For those who don't live in the South, it is shocking to see pentecostal and other services where folks are talking in tongues and laying on hands.
If you ever get the chance to attend one of these services or the opportunity to go to a baptist revival, call in dead.
You'll thank me later.  [;)]

Fast Reply -

Sometimes the line between symbolic and literal interpretation of scripture is the flatline on a heart monitor.

Gee, did anyone notice how all those people look like each other? Must be all one family.
I wonder if they speak in tongues when a cop pulls them over?
"Got any I.D.?"
"'Bout whaaat?"  "Oooga boogga!"
Must be a lot of studying going on to be able to, "speak in tongues!" "Ok, open to p. 35 in your snakebook and for today's service we'll be speaking in German only! No English!"
How do they learn so many differant languages?

Lashra -> RE: '..and they shall take up serpents...' (6/1/2009 3:17:49 AM)

I feel that if it is something they wish to do and if they are not harming anyone, I frankly do not care. I saw a special on tv about this years ago and the only thing that bothered me was them allowing the children to play with the snakes. Personally this is just another "crazy spin" that someone has put on the bible and what people will do in the name of religion does not surprise me.

~fr~

To be honest, it comes across to me as snake/serpent 'worshiping', not snake handling.

It does not bother me that others would choose to do that. I would feel compelled to tell anyone who confronted me with a situation, causing a need to address it; but I feel it is their choice.

Teaching others to believe falsely; is not something I would wish to be a part of.

Lucylastic -> RE: '..and they shall take up serpents...' (6/1/2009 5:03:42 AM)

tis my humble opinion that their bubbles dont quite rise to the top, but thats fine, as long as they are only doing it to themselves. I dont have an issue with it
Ive seen a documentary on it and it was interesting to say the least, people in general are so strange, but it takes alll kinds, other peoples foibles intrigue me no end.

My understanding is the the "tongues" are never recognizable languages but always "ancient" tongues or "angelic" ones.  In other words, a nice way to cover up the fact that your just spouting gobbeldy gook (although I'll grant that the true believers actually do believe their own nonsense - the power of self delusion is astounding).

You can also see speaking in tongues in the documentary Jesus Camp.  A documentary I also recomend to anyone who wants to see brainwashing in action.  It is truly scrary.
