I am so looking forward to seeing this movie.. Tarantino is just awesome, so I know I'll love the movie. I'll let ya know what I think after I see it.

I think you'll look awesome in some red and black lingerie vampire girl.

The thing is, "torture tales" were no originated by Mr. Roth and Mr. Tarintino. The Grand Gulinol tratidtion has been with us since the beginning. "The Pit and the Pendulum" by Poe is little more than a description of a nameless protagonist trying to survive the tortures of the inquisition. "Hostel" is just the next story in this line of horror tales.

I, like some other posters, just found the movie a bit frustrating, because we just don't get a clear story arc. Did the main character change in any way? Did he learn anything about life in his escape? Or was it just sensational titillation for the sake of making a quick buck at the box office? Seems to me there is very little art to this film. Not much characterization, not much subtext, no "truth" to hold onto as you exit the darkened theatre.

Could it happen? Hell, it already does. Only in this case, the ones we know about are agents of the U.S. Government, kidnapping people off the street, shipping them overseas, and torturing them in "black prisons." Freezing rooms... sleep deprivation... water boarding... electrified scrotums... binding their hands behind them and releasing gaurd dogs on them... anal rape... Of course, other, even more barbaric governments, do it too. (Doesn't make you proud knowing we've joined that club?)

Oh, and LA? I found your comment about how we, in BDSM, are a hairbreath away from becoming like the sadistic, rich yuppies in the movie... Well, that's a valid point, but I come to BDSM as a means of working out those nasty dark impulses. By reducing it to a sexual game, it keeps me from ever crossing that line. Comparing us to the actions in the film, I think is a bit like comparing the Tet Offensive with a game of afterwork paintball. From the outside, I suppose the actions seem similar, but the outcomes are utterly different. One is reality, with a goal of death and destruction, the other is a game with cathartic uses. I play paintball as a way of freeing myself from the frustrations I feel at work. It keeps me from ever wanting to solve things with real violence. BDSM, for me, provides a similar function.  BDSM is my refusal to ever be that kind of a bad person. (Just my take on it.)

I actually did start to watch it but I gave up long before the bloody bits because of the poor acting. Maybe if the main characters were better fleshed out  there might have been hope for it. I was surprised to see a sequel, so obviously this film did have a core audience.

I think there's more worthwhile thought in this thread than anyone ever put into Hostel being a worthwhile movie.

Or should have.

KashmirKitten -> RE: Reactions to Hostel (10/29/2007 11:45:04 PM)

I dont understand why this is considered a lifestyle film. It's a sick movie..

MissMagnolia -> RE: Reactions to Hostel (10/29/2007 11:51:43 PM)

Its really just another in a long line of slasher movies.

spirit1975 -> RE: Reactions to Hostel (10/30/2007 2:18:23 AM)

The reaction in Slovkia to Hostel was not too kind either! A very good friend of mine is Slovakian and she felt she needed to tell the whole world that "Slovakians are not like that, we do not chop people up!" She was also at pains to make the point that the film was not shot in Slovakia but in the Czech rep. Very proud people and also very friendly too. In my opinion the film was far fetched and basically just another gore fest, at least if you are going to make a film like that then have a bit of black humour in it like Severence did.

MistressPurpleFL -> RE: Reactions to Hostel (11/3/2007 1:41:46 AM)

I have seen both 1 and 2 and all of the Saw Movies,

I just saw the movie yesterday and I loved it... I had a thread about the erotic nature of such films and my reactions to them.  I am more enthralled by the metal chains; many people bound, and the whimpers of the victims than the murder scenes itself.  I am not for killing my pets; I prefer to play with live things...

The movie did have a lot of Bdsm appeal for me; it was what it was Entertainment.

petdave -> RE: Reactions to Hostel (11/5/2007 8:51:52 PM)

i didn't see the first Hostel, but skipped to #2 since it was at the video store... massively disappointing. After 50 minutes of filler, we finally got a good scene with the girl hanging upside-down and gagged and i thought it was finally going to go somewhere... and that was the high point of the whole movie. Weak. [:'(]

TheScrivener -> RE: Reactions to Hostel (11/13/2007 8:27:52 AM)

I thought the first Hostel movie was outright rubbish.  I haven't seen the sequel, although I doubt I ever will.

It wasn't even that shocking of a concept.

dyingsexy -> RE: Reactions to Hostel (11/13/2007 1:05:05 PM)

i loved hostel.... even though it didnt turn me on at all. In hostel2, the client with the scythe was definitely exciting and gave me ideas of things to do, though. The other half of me knows its crap and as a bio major, i can point out the flaws. In a way, to get into it, its just like a scene and you have to suspend disbelief in order to enjoy it. I dont think it portrays my lifestyle that poorly- 95% of the public has much deeper seated issues against bdsm/poly/etc than Hostel.

CollegeConundrum -> RE: Reactions to Hostel (11/13/2007 4:29:11 PM)

The idea of fear in relation to the "situations" was Hostel could be an incredibly aphrodisiac but I would hope if you ever found yourself in that position with someone, you would know that would not slice your fingers away or jam a knife in your arm, so the fear is eliminated.

***SPOILERS TO HOSTEL TWO included in this post***

I liked Hostel, thought it was an alright movie.  When the second one came out a friend and I went to see it right away.  I LOVED IT.  The opening of it, where the guys were bidding on the victims, OMG I was so excited I wanted to jump up out of My seat, I felt such a rush, few movies have done that to Me.  Then the scene when the girl was hanging upside down above the woman in the tub, the whole crowd was quiet, and My friend had tears in her eyes, all of a sudden I could not hold it in anymore, I just start laughing, My friend was NOT impressed.  But I just could not help it.  I found it very exciting, at times a nice rush would run thru Me.  It was the great job they did at letting us feel the fear from the victims, that made the whole movie.

Feminita -> RE: Reactions to Hostel (11/16/2007 8:14:33 AM)

i still prefer the standards of Natural Born Killers,House of 1,000 Corpses,Devils Rejects over any of the Saw or Hostel films

grlneedstolearn -> RE: Reactions to Hostel (11/16/2007 10:37:42 PM)

It was an awesome movie to watch, and there were a lot of different BDSM scenes in it that i enjoyed personally. [:D]
