Are there actually any private Chinese companies? I don't think there are. Aren't they all controlled by the Chinese government?

Apparently there are:

My question about this sale is, what exactly is this Chinese company getting?  Let's keep in mind that Hummer began by developing an extremely capable off-road, light weapons platform.  Are they buying factories and employee pension plans, or are they getting a shitload of military technology we might wish they hadn't been handed?  Yeah, I know.  It's hardly the timing sequences for an H-bomb, but HMMWVs move armies pretty damn well.
How long before this company starts getting orders from the Chinese Army?

GM did not develop the HMMWV. AM General did. They build the H1 and H2 for GM. So really I have no idea what GM is selling.

China already has 2 companies building HMMWV's with an unknown connection to AM General.

GM bought the Hummer brand from AM General, in the late 90's.  The H2 and H3 were GM creations.  AM General made the H1 and H2 for GM, with GM building the H3.

Why restate what I said? Was there some point?

While I would be tickled pink to offer up a big plate of blame to Obama and the other idiots in D.C.,  Politesub is correct. The hummer is losing money.... it's not like we are selling the plans for state of the art weapons systems. China has more then enough weapons to deal with us at the moment.. if they wanted to lead us to ruin all they need do is dump all those dollars they have onto the market.

And ruin themselves at the same time? Very clever.

awmslave -> RE: Government Motors Is Selling The Hummer Division To The Chinese (6/3/2009 3:19:26 PM)

Chinese need to speed up buying America in small pieces. There is no doubt trillion plus US debt they own will never be fully compensated. My advise to Chinese: ask increasingly bigger pieces. In few years B2 can be yours.

I wouldn't have thrown 20 billion at the company, literally taking control over it, and given 50 billion more so they can go through bankruptcy.

Why make up such high figures. I thought GM had been given way less than you claim. Id love to see a link showing they had had $70 billion from the treasury.

A government hummer?

Not for the faint  of blowjobs.

How did Obama & the Democrats destroy the economy while  Bush was in office, you ask?

Here's part of the story:

Obama: sub-prime mortgages "a good idea".

Democrats were wrong on Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac - and Bush, McCain & the Republicans were right.

Thanks for the links, but i have two problems. The first is just a cleverly edited piece which is anti Obama. Is there any chance of his complete speech please.

The second is off topic, you started this one about GM and not sub prime, that has been done already. Wiki states that GMs problems stemed from 2000, so whoevers fault that was, it wasnt Obamas, as you stated in the OP. As for me casting aspersions about BUsh, well he had 8 years in office, if he could see changes needed to be made, why didnt he make them ?

You say i havent any facts. GM employed around 240,000 people. Add to that all the subsidary suppliers involved and you have a massive workforce. So again, would you have prefered to see all those people be made redundant ?

I understand your point about court appointed advisers to restructure GM, but how could this have happened without the TARPs loan.  ( Sorry if that isnt the right wording )

Yeah there was a point.  "Your quote, So really I have no idea what GM is selling.".  They are selling what they own.  They own the Hummer Brand, AM General might have made the original design, but they sold it to GM.  The Brand, all designs, the dealer network, along with agreements of where to build the vehicles in the US is what the Chinese company is buying.  You seemed confused about what GM owned.

DomKen -> RE: Government Motors Is Selling The Hummer Division To The Chinese (6/3/2009 5:35:16 PM)

I know what GM owns. They don't own the designers who developed the HMMWV, which was a claim made in the post I initially responded to. They don't actually build any HMMWV or H1 or H2, which responds to the point in the post I replied to about factories. I also pointed out that Chinese companies already build HMMWV's so it is unreasonable to assume that GM selling the brand would have any effect on whether the chinese military would be equipped with HMMWV's.

And "letting them go bankrupt" is how it's legally done when this sort of thing happens. They're restructured under court supervision, as opposed to the supervision of politicians who have an agenda.

I do believe that through all the mud and the muck this statement is the most telling and alarming.

I hate to sound like Hunk the Conspirator Theorist, but...

I assure you that sheep skin suits are currently all the rave within the Washington Beltway, probably always have been.

Those of you that believe any politician and most certainly the dreaded career politician is simply in this to serve this nation and the greater good should not only seek medical treatment; but should also stop by their local blacksmith and be fitted for a custom, made to order set of chains...

I asked just before the elections "just who is this Barack Obama fellow?" An answer seems to be evolving before our eyes.

I would hope the Jack Ass contingent doesn't make the same mistake as the Fat Ass party by blindly defending a growing nosed baffoon simply in order to preserve their on ego's and self righteous postions.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Government Motors Is Selling The Hummer Division To The Chinese (6/3/2009 6:40:03 PM)

They are built in China with the assistance of GM.  Many of the parts including the chassis and gear boxes come from the American factories.

servantforuse -> RE: Government Motors Is Selling The Hummer Division To The Chinese (6/3/2009 6:47:57 PM)

Owning a private company in China lasts only as long as they want it to last. It is kind of like Obamas buddy Hugo Chaves. Just take over everything when they are a threat to you and have your opponents arrested on trumped up charges..

i just saw a commercial that said...

since it was on tv, that means its all gonna be all right.

Only if the commercial was concluded with one of those, " I'm Barak Obama and I approved this message!"

Thanks, Ken.  Though if they were buying the chassis, gearbox and engine (?) from us previously, it does seem this sale is going to bring a lot more technological know-how into their production.

I found this picture of their version.  http://eng.wcetv.com/1/2009/01/12/125s9381_2.htm .  Interesting paint job on that one.

A new poll shows that a full 67 percent of U.S. voters oppose the Obama administration's plan to bail out General Motors with nearly $50 billion (emphasis mine) and 51 percent of all Americans say they would rather buy a car from Ford because it did not take a government bailout.
In a statement, the White House announced today that the U.S. Treasury will provide approximately $30.1 billion to GM through an expedited chapter 11 proceeding and transition the new GM through its restructuring plan.
The federal government is set to receive approximately $8.8 billion in debt and preferred stock in the new GM and approximately 60 percent of GM's equity
.
The Governments of Canada and Ontario will also lend an additional $9.5 billion to GM and New GM. According to the plan, the Canadian and Ontario governments will receive $1.7 billion in debt
[image]http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/lib/imgs/grey_loader.gif[/image]and preferred stock and 12 percent of the equity of the new GM. The Canadian government claims it will divest itself of its GM stake by 2018.

"Based on these steps, the new GM will have far less debt and a world class balance sheet," the White House said in the statement. "This will allow the company the financial stability to weather future market downturns and generate significant excess free cash flow to invest in the business."
But according to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey, only 21 percent of U.S. voters support the Obama administration's plan to inject $50 billion into the auto giant and give the governments 70 percent ownership of the company.
The majority of voters – or 56 percent – say it would be better to let GM go out of business.

Of course none of that includes what Bush provided in bailout money...  There are plenty of other articles that document the actual dollars "invested" in the bailout of just GM, but hell you are plenty capable of looking those up.

I wish you well,
Thadius
