President Obama should have mentioned that in his speech in Cairo, Egypt! Lol!
That'd really get those fuckers going!

The problem with this of course - not mentioned in the comments to the article as far as I read, is that when the shells start falling and the bullets are flying, there aint a single atheist to be found.

No wonder then that the religious are more often at war.

Bull. I was an atheist throughout my military service even while being shot at.

While one of the comments after the article hit the nail on the head with: "correlation doesn't equal causation", the article still made me chuckle.  Thanks, MsFlutter!  :>

I'm disappointed, Ellen. This is what passes for "argument"?

Assumptions, even those cool-sounding ones repeated until they're practically slogans, are still unsupported.

And arguments that need them in place of evidence are still invalid, however fervent the speaker.

If you want to speculate, perhaps it's harder to justify a war when you can't use "God is on our side."

The article doesn't really argue for a link, just pointing out a snapshot as things stand.

To establish a cause would indeed take far more than the author presents.

Reread the article. The author never makes a causitive claim. However the numbers presented, and I haven't reviewed them in full so I assume the bloggers honesty, are correlative beyond any reasonable statistical variation. IOW based on that data nations with more atheists and less people that attend religious services regularly are more peaceful and nations with the opposite condition are more violent.

From far back in my recollections of reading anthropology, the top three violent peoples, defined as "historically trend toward solving their problems with violence," are (in no particular order) the United States, Japan, and the Yanomano of Brazil.

Just FYI.

Gee .....God must have had a difficult time during the Crusades, seeing as he was on both sides~!   I guess though, that's a great way to get one up in the 'W' column and, since we know, history is written by the winners, obviously, the side that lost were Godless heathens despite their protestations.

Hang on though .... even Heathens have a religious belief (I know, since I am one) and we believe in a pantheistic immanence .... shouldn't the heathens always win because we have more Gods on our side than the monotheists do?

Gosh, this religious debate stuff is hard.   I'll stick to simple topics like sexuality, gender identity and BDSM in future.

And before I get howled at from all directions; yes, this reply is meant to be ironical.

Music, did you forget about the Irish? They've been fighting over there for 800 years.

This makes me think of the South Park episodes where Cartman goes forward like 3000 years in time, nobody believes in God, so they fight over who has the better Science
my point? Humans are predatory and will find any reason to fight.

That is an interesting correlation, Ms. Flutter. Thank you for posting the article.

I am skeptical however because of the violent behavior humanity has shown throughout our bloody history.

LOL. As one speaker put it once, "Ireland--a place of sad songs and merry wars."

Maybe all the atheists you know are so because of religious rebellion or ambivalence, but that's not the case for any who has arrived at the conclusion with logical sensibility.

Maybe atheists don't have quite the motivational urge to die for an idea when they're aware they have nothing left for them afterward once they do so. It certainly gives pause to consideration of the things you are most emotionally invested in before jumping.

Merit? Meaning...what? They fabricated the statistics?

Would it feel better to pretend they did...or to pretend that you can just safely hide behind inference of the statistics?

Except that the statistics are essentially a nation-wide causative point: if you are a nation with a greater percentage of atheists and a smaller percentage of people attending continual religious services, you are statistically more likely to be more peaceful.than countries whose percentages are inverse.
