OK.

Bush's first year and Obama's first year are night and day in terms of where the country is and what we're facing. Trading bashes is pointless. Irrelevant. Apples and Oranges.

The current problems bridge administrations here. The overspending and the bailouts and the credit crisis and Gitmo and the wars and the security vs. freedom and torture vs. rights debates--these all started during the Bush administration, and Obama was handed the mess, whomever deserves the blame/credit for getting us here. And polarizing every discussion as rabid Obama fans or nutty right-wing radicals contributes nothing to the conversation, and makes posters here look even more ridiculous than the extremists on both sides of Congress during a hot political showdown.

Obama is doing a reasonable job addressing a mountain of problems. No, that doesn't mean I agree with it all. I do agree that Afghanistan is a bigger problem than Iraq, and that it was ignored too long. I also agree that, while I'm painfully aware of the cost, we cannot simply let the economy flounder. Invisible Hand enthusiasts overlook that Adam Smith wrote during an agrarian age. We can't just all go back to the farm while the economy corrects itself. The Industrial Revolution is here to stay. I'm nervous that the contractionary policy needed when we're over this hump won't be popular either and thus may be neglected, but alas, first things first. And government spending doesn't just go poof--it goes back into the economy, contributing to GDP and boosting consumption. The legal/rights issues concern me, but again, this is a continuation of concerns I had during the previous administration.

So while no, he doesn't get a free pass, he does still have my support. And no, that doesn't mean I agree with whatever stunts the Democrats pull anymore than I'm impressed with Republican nonsense.

I DO hope that, while I doubt it, Americans learn two things from all this: (1) don't just wave flags when leaders decide we'll just go over and kick some foreign ass, and (2) relearn how to save--we're one of the richest nations in the world, yet we have a negative savings rate (I'm talking about citizens here, not the government--and no, it's not the fault of taxes, as we have among the lowest taxes of any industrial nation). Americans tend to worry about problems only during hard times, squandering opportunities during better times to prepare.

Well, you also have to wonder... how much of Obama's popularity is due to the fact he can speak in complete sentances, has some concept of paragraphical structure, can pronounce "Nuclear" correctly, and doesn't have that annoying, "hick giggle" every time he attempts to make a "joke?" He's visiting Germany today.... I wonder if he plans on giving out unrequested back rubs to the leadership there? Or shout out to the Spanish envoy, "Hola, Amigo!" from across the room, as Bush did at the last G-8 summit... Maybe Obama's popular becase he can stand next to a british PM, and not look like a cast member from "Hee Haw."

Much of Obama's popularity right now is due to the fact that he's NOT George "W." (the lame)

Only time will tell if his policies and leadership will sustain him. After all, 9metaphorically speaking) no one likes the guy who has to come in, stop the eight year long "trash the hotel room" party, and then mop up all the shit, piss, vomit and condoms left behind by the frat boys and their skanky girlfriends.

Mars, and he doesn't have that wild hyena laugh when he's talking to Russian presidents either.

My impression is that an "average American" is relatively uninformed. As approval rating reflects average opinion it evaluates the public relations work quality of the  of Obama administration and has little to do with real substance of Obama policies.

That's a pretty good point....a bit cynical, but undeniably a good point.

Those numbers appear to be pulled out of your orifice. they are not the numbers I found anywhere.
gallup has 62 31
research 2k has 65 30
rasmussen has 55 45 (and has never had the strongly approve strongly disapprove numbers that you claim)

As Arpig mentioned this is a very good point. It was often mentioned that Bush did too little in the way of damage control and the overly influential US public follows right along with the loudest voice on the mountain.

Hmmm, interesting indeed.

I guess you didnt want to guess at the correlations in the other thread.

And its no longer a guess that you arent capable of admitting an obvious mistake. Youve done it twice now.

Amazing, isn't it, how all these thousands of Americans polled are so uninformed, and yet only a select few like yourself see the truth.

The way he worded it is a bit confusing... but it is an accurate depiction of the Rasmussen poll.

Overall approval is at 54%, overall disapproval is at 46%.  With 34% strongly approving and 34% strongly disapproving.

Well I goofed. It appears I was looking at a cached page for the Rasmussen poll and saw only the 6/4 numbers as an examination of the numbers I provided would show.

So I guess that puts a lie to my never admitting an error.

Of perhaps greater interest is the steadily decreasing strong approval ratings versus strong disapproval ratings since about the third week of January, 2009. On January 21st the difference was +28 points, with 44% strongly approving and only 16% strongly disapproving. By the end of the first week of March, that advantage had eroded to single digits. In the June 6th ratings, it hit zero. Not a sign of popular delight, methinks.
