Actually that's not correct--maybe most of the mugs you currently have don't heat up that way, however, unless the mug says microwave safe, it isn't--that doesnt mean it will necessarily break or explode, it means it may reach extreme temps rapidly as well. It has to be the china like materials and the glaze used---any metallic would have sparked or arced in the microwave.
