Oh, hey, and just to bring this thread up to today's headlines... Now, just a few days after Obama's speech... Hezbolla loses the election, and a more moderate faction takes control... Next up... the elections in Iran... do you suppose current extremeist Ahmadinnerjacket might be sweating, since, (after the speech) the polls show him behind to the more moderate candidate?

Gosh, you DON'T SUPPOSE that maybe some leadership and diplomacy is actually working, instead of this "You're either with us, or against us." Or "we're on a crusade" BUSH SHIT?

So Mars, using the reasoning you were running on here, does "I'm-a-nut-job's" re-election in Iran mean President Obama's speech was a failure?  I mean, we know you'd be trying to give him the credit if it had gone the other way.

Iran declares win for Ahmadinejad

Does anybody have any idea how the actual voting went?

The numbers were in my link, Ken.  Something like 62% for the current nut-job, 33% for the moderate.

edit:  Hmm...  My link doesn't seem to be going the same place it was...  I'll find the numbers again.

I haven't seen much media coverage on it, nor has anyone mentioned it here.  I thought it was a great speech.  Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on it?  (I learn so much from you guys!  )

It wasn't bad.....but there was no mention of US and Israeli nuclear weapons....only mention of Iran's WMDs (the US and associates have nuclear weapons while their opponents have weapons of mass destruction of course).

And that is the crux of the matter: no one is going to listen to any president who derides Iranian attempts to build nuclear weapons while stockpiling an arsenal themselves.

Those are the official results. All indications are those numbers are cooked.

Because the losers say so???  I'm thinking of that women who couldn't believe Nixon won, because she didn't know anybody who voted for him.

The 12th Imam is a powerful mythology in that country, and I'm-a-nut-job was squarely tapped into it.  The other guy was their McGovern.

I was wondering..... is the reelection of a conservative candidate in Iran a comfort to US conservatives in the same way that it was proposed the results of the Euro elections were?

I was also wondering.... (show of hands?) how many people had any idea that Iran held elections at all?

I'm not seeing many hands, LadyE.  Shall we mention how the candidates get picked?

There is one other aspect that occurred to me about how President Obama's speech might have been a player in the Iranian election.  Remember the flap about bitter, rural PA residents clinging to their guns and God?  How many Iranian holocaust deniers did he insult in the very same way?

Just my opinion, but I think it was 'cooked', too.  As mixed as the emotions seemed (and really, from my perspective it seemed Musavi [sp] was inching out ahead of Ahmadinejad before election day), I'd have thought the gap of the win (if it was an honest win) would have been smaller than it was.

And Lady Ellen, I knew they held elections...  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_Iran   but my wonder is how ethical they really are.  The President of Iran is elected by simple majority of the popular vote.  **editted to say, not that I think simple majority of popular vote makes it unethical lol.  I have no clue what Ahmadinejad is capable of though, and he's demonstrated several irrational remarks, so far.

as I said in the other thread on this subject - Ali Khameini might be a sinner or a saint, but either way he's no fool. Any rapprochement will have to be portrayed within Iran as due to Iranian strength and only one candidate fits the bill for that.

No, they don't. Not even Iran has an idea how the voting actually went, apparently.
