LiveScience.com jeremy Hsu livescience.com – Mon Jun 8, 8:18 am ET News readers gorge on media messages that fit their pre-existing views, rather than graze on a wider range of perspectives. In other words, they consume what they agree with, researchers say. The finding comes out of a recent study which tracked how college students spent their time reading media articles on hot-button issues such as abortion or gun ownership. Unsurprisingly, students gravitated toward articles that supported their views. ....... Awww, heck, KD, I guess I should stop reading your posts ;) I know people don't read mine either...they just skim and nitpick. But hey, that's what consumes bandwidth, even if it doesn't change minds! I'm sure we agree on many things. There are just "boundary" discussions we bump into. Let's face it, if every post was "Yes, I agree" or, heaven forbid, "Ditto!" , we'd only have one sub-board. I like to hear reasoned, opposing views and have even changed my mind a couple times. But then, I'm supposed to, as a professor. Of course, the key is *reasoned* instead of "just because I think it is so" approach. Opinions, not biases and prejudices. Researched and a product of study, not a regurgitation of unsubstantiated belief. Or "just because I love to argue" people. ------------- I just hope Mars is on blood pressure medication!

There is considerable evidence and ever-building amounts of research into TV viewing, reading and little learning when that which is read and viewed simply to reinforcing one's own prejudices and presumptions. One can see it in the blogs...little learning about politics, parties, personal issues and the like. Debates are often between two groups or individuals who are there to argue their own prejudices.

Now that is making me scratch my head. A recent thread on CM asking if anyone ever changed his or her minds because of the discussions here …got an overwhelming yes response. This doesn’t fit with your ideas on debate. Do you think they were lying? Butch

It's a weird sentence, as people with stronger party affiliation and greater interest in politics obvious encompasses readers of all views, liberal, moderate and conservative alike.

Politics is genetic. They did a twins study back in 1990s. Raised in different homes, one kid in a liberal other was in a Republican home and the kids grew up with the same, identical political philosophies. So there is only one solution to it all...[:)]

My homepage is yahoo. After logging on, and viewing the latest news stories, I generally visit collarme. After that, I go to cnn.com. Call me a liar if you like, but I go to cnn.com before I go to fox news. I USED to really like cnn, until they changed their format. Now they offer only two headlines in every category. I usually look at the US news, sometimes World news. But then I go to Fox. I find it easier to navigate, and more information on homepage.
