Another step Obama has taken that I like:

" The Obama administration took a key step today as the president tries to keep a pledge to close the Guantanamo Bay prison by next January while not losing his party's support.
The Justice Department said that Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, one of 240 remaining detainees at Guantanamo, was transferred to New York today to stand trial for his alleged role in the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya that killed more than 200 people. Ghailani, who would be the first Guantanamo inmate to be tried in a US civilian court, is scheduled to appear today in US District Court in Manhattan. "

A 1st step

Tried, for an act of war???

This sets a dangerous precedent for our own soldiers. Now, instead of being held as prisoners of war during any given conflict they'll be subject to prosecution as "criminals".

Only written slightly tongue-in-cheek...

I think you mean tried for an act of terrorism. Which of course sets no precedent in regards to our servicepeople.

Here's the joke - since the exposure of CIA EITs are alleged to legitimize the continuation of torturing captured American soldiers, why couldn't our various enemies simply redefine our legitimate acts of war as "terrorism" in order justify putting our captured military personnel through show trials on their soil, using their system of justice. Okay, so maybe you have to be a little bit twisted to get the humor...

Still, this whole thing is a mockery - bringing terrorists here, giving them all the rights of citizens, exposing all our secrets...

How can our civil laws possibly apply in the foreign lands where these acts were committed. It's lunacy... the rules of warfare should cover all of this, and they do. Making acts of war criminal offenses is nothing short of insane, it opens a Pandoras box that we cannot possibly foresee all the consequences of opening.

For example - are our soldiers now going to be required to gather evidence, just like the FBI does?  Get court orders, before busting through a door in Iraq or Afghanistan? All the ramifications of this kind of thinking are just totally insane. Laughable!

This is a good beginning for a long neglected problem.
