Can any one give me some information on special considerations for a diabetic submissive that should be followed during play?

yoursnatch -> RE: Diabetic Submissives (2/11/2006 7:49:52 AM)

I am not a diabetic myself but my sister is and she has been in the lifestyle for years. If they are following the proper diet and taking thier meds as ordered then thier should be no issues. As i said i am no expert but i know that a proper diet is important. Otherwise you should have no problems. Hope this helps

Yes, I am a diabetic (Not a submissive) but I do know that a real hard session lowers my sugar, so I always have a glass of orange juice ready for after-care for me. Maybe a piece of hard candy. Above all else, make sure that you don't forget to pay attention to other things your body is telling you besides the feel of what your Dom is doing to you.

I've played with a few, and I was always sure to have them assure me of their diet and exercise being proper given that they are diabetic.

Same here MistressofGa, hard candy and juice afterwards, just in case! Checking the toes and fingers to be sure the blood flow is good. You can tell when it starts to drop. They will get cold really quick, may even shake lightly, and get awfully still.

It can't be much different from anyone else who deals with an on-going medical condition. Know what you need to do in order to be safe. If necessary, explain to your partner how and/or what he/she can do to help you, if necessary.

This is true for low sugar levels with me. However, with high sugar, I get confused and lose orientation. My pup is aware of my diabetic reactions and is aware of what to do if either occur.

My Master is also a diabetic, we check His sugar level before we play and like to err a little on the high side before we begin, just in case. There are also jelly beans within easy reach if needed. If I am in bondage (rarely) it will not be too tight that I can't get out of it in an emergency. *He likes to use mental bondage more than the physical*[:)]

When His sugar drops He gets confused, sweaty and His speech starts to slur a little, that's when I know it's time for a sugar boost.

HouseofBear -> RE: Diabetic Submissives (2/11/2006 6:26:58 PM)

Bear is diabetic and we check his sugar levels before play. We have also played with diabetic submissives, and required that they check their sugar level before play. We keep a glucometer handy. Erring a little on the high side is ok, however if it is quite a bit over the norm, we will not play with them either. Diabetes is a weird thing. Play will quite often drop the levels, however in the past we have seen where if it is high, play actually drove it higher. We once saw where a dominant and a diabetic sub were playing. Afterwards she seemed to be having what everyone thought was a sugar drop, and the dominant gave her some juice, which did not help and her level of consciousness deteriorated. The EMTs were called (seems the couple had not not brought her glucometer with them to play that night). She was taken to the ER with a sugar level of almost 500. So, just a couple of suggestions, take the sugar level before play. Keep glucose tablets handy, as well as a protein snack (skim milk, peanut butter crackers). If the sugar is only a little low, do not give something real sugary like orange juice. The milk, peanut butter, or something similar is a much better choice.

MistressOfGa -> RE: Diabetic Submissives (2/11/2006 7:17:40 PM)

Lady Ursa,
Yes I agree that orange juice can be just a tad bit much if the sugar level is just alittle low, I mentioned it because it is a fast sugar boost. But of course your snacks ideas are very good too. The last time I went to the ER with a high sugar level it was 1200, I thought I was going to have a stroke.

wetsub000 -> RE: Diabetic Submissives (2/12/2006 2:25:16 AM)

There are also different types of diabetics. Type 1 and Type 2. At one end of the scale a Type 2 diabetic may be able to control their sugar levels through simply good diet and exercise regimes and at the other end a Type 1 diabetic may require regular insulin and sugar level monitoring. As Katy said, it's so individual it would be like playing with anyone else with a medical condition, find out from them what you may need to look out for and how to handle things if symptoms arise.

I'm diabetic but have never had it affect BDSM play.

Trust me, so did the lab tech running the test! (It's what I do)[:)]

Crazytwice -> RE: Diabetic Submissives (2/12/2006 9:01:11 AM)

Lady Ursa said it right.

Diabetes is indeed a weird thing. No matter how thoroughly you understand the disease and how diligent you are in managing it, it still plays tricks on you. Low blood sugars for no apparent reason; high levels for no apparent reason. I recently spent some time with an endocrinologist at the Joslin Clinic, trying to figure out why a well-controlled woman of 36 would peak at around 300 in the middle of the night. She was doing all the right things.
Even he didnt have an aswer.

Your best bet is to have a glucometer with you at all times, as well as insulin and some jelly beans or sugar packets. The jelly beans and/or sugar may scoot you up too high,
but that is much less dangerous than falling so low that you can't eat or drink.
If this happens, put the packet of sugar under the tongue, it will be absorbed through the mucous membrane in the mouth, and your sugar should start to come up in 15 minutes or so. You will see the person becoming more responsive. Follow with peanut butter and milk. If you don't see any improvement about 15 minutes after the sugar and the meter is still reading low, call EMTs. Some people will be symtomatic at 60, others won't show any symptoms until below 40.

Hope this helps.

I am diabetic and like others have said, if your diabetes is under control, diet and medication, there shouldnt be any problems. My Dom knows about it and i would tell him if i didnt feel well, luckily it never happened. When W/we session, He often ask me if i am alright.......so comforting to me [:)]

Having a glass of orange juice close by is a smart move.

I am a diabetic submisve and can say a few things here i have found that have not been mentiond. As a diabetic i must first say as many have make sure your levels are good and have juice or i have found poweraid or simular sports drink handy. Inverted suspenstion is something that should never be done diabitie can attack the blood vessles in the eyes and that rush of blood if there weekend will cause them to burst causing blindness. Its not worth the feeling of the play. Also if there into cutting remeber diabitecs heal slower so the scars will last longer.

slavejali -> RE: Diabetic Submissives (2/13/2006 6:48:38 PM)

A lot of this is most likely repetitive but here's my two cents....

1. Be aware of mood swings, it could mean a sugar high or low.
2. I wouldnt advise any cutting play whatsoever..even the slightest infection is a nightmare to a diabetic.
3. Bondage shouldnt be tight, and if there is bondage at all, massage is essential afterwards for circulation.
4. Know how to handle a sugar low, or sugar high.
5. Educate yourself.

IrishMist -> RE: Diabetic Submissives (2/13/2006 7:20:10 PM)

Don't forget wounds. Diabetics have a harder time healing, so you need to watch that no open wounds occur.

FangsNfeet -> RE: Diabetic Submissives (2/13/2006 7:40:31 PM)

This is an easy one for you.

1. Check blood sugar before the scene

2. Have submissive eat something such as an Ultra Meal Bar/Shake prior to scene

3. Do scene as normal.

Normally, being a Diabeitic will not effect much as long as the exercise and heathy diet is there.

The worst part about a submissive that's diabetic is how it may effect the ability to heal. Bruises, cuts, and such may take longer if and when inflicted. You might end up having more fun with ice/water play, wax play, TENS Units, and bondage, which normally only cause very little if any damage to the body.

If you would like more detail just send me an message.

MistressAlexaS -> RE: Diabetic Submissives (2/14/2006 8:42:50 AM)

I'm diabetic though not a submissive. Diabetics bruise very easily and they linger. We are also prone to infection so condoms on toys are a must, any breaking of the skin must be tended to right away. Infections can be a nightmare for us, I've had a friend loose a couple of toes due to a cut that wasn't taken care of properly. Our circulation sometimes isnt so good so no tight bondage and always check the extremities for coldness, change of color etc. Look out for highs/lows in blood glucose levels, know what to look for and keep a piece of candy handy just in case in case they start to *bottom out*. Mood swings are an indication sometimes of high/low blood sugar levels so watch out for those.
