The latest update:

• Relatives of former Iranian president arrested

I think this split amongst the Ayatollahs is proof that not every Iranian sees the US and UK as the great satan. Rafsanjani always came across to me as one of the more moderate leaders, in his dealings with the outside world.

And considering he holds some real power it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

its important within Iran that any rapprochement with the west can be shown to be on Iranian terms. Ali Khameini may be a saint or a sinner, but whichever it is, he's no fool.

I wonder if switching our locations to Iran as you say will make it any harder to get through airports some time in the future.

For those who want to actually do something that might help the protesters, here is a quick click to fuck with the efforts of the Iranian gov't to squash communication.  On your Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, and yes, right here on CM, change your location to Iran.

I heard this discussed on CNN this morning, and had it confirmed by a tech friend as "couldn't hurt," and will likely make things tougher for the techies in Tehran to block communications. (Immediately after that, he started speaking a language that caused my eyes to glaze over.)

The US government taking a side in this mess is a problem.  A bit of individual monkey-wrenching?  I'm in!

If my CM posts have to pass muster for me to get on an airplane, Sanity, I'll be driving anyway.

Saeed Mortazavi: butcher of the press - and torturer of Tehran?

The Iranian regime has appointed one of its most feared prosecutors to interrogate reformists arrested during demonstrations, prompting fears of a brutal crackdown against dissent.

Relatives of several detained protesters have confirmed that the interrogation of prisoners is now being headed by Saaed Mortazavi, a figure known in Iran as “the butcher of the press”. He gained notoriety for his role in the death of a Canadian-Iranian photographer who was tortured, beaten and raped during her detention in 2003.

“The leading role of Saeed Mortazavi in the crackdown in Tehran should set off alarm bells for anyone familiar with his record,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, the Middle East and North Africa director of Human Rights Watch.

As prosecutor-general of Tehran since 2003 and as a judge before that, he ordered the closure of more than 100 newspapers, journals and websites deemed hostile to the Establishment. In 2004 he was behind the detention of more than 20 bloggers and journalists, who were held for long periods of solitary confinement in secret prisons, where they were allegedly coerced into signing false confessions.

Well the demonstrations still seem to be continuing. It seems to be the middle classes who want change. Let`s not forget it was this same group that were a mainstay in deposing the Shah. The strikes in 1978 by the Bazaaris and other groups of worker brought the country to a standstill. Eventually the Isalamic groups gained power, but intially the drive was by the middle classes. This is the same as is taking place today, voilence against these groups didnt work in 79 and wont work now.

The Shah was toppled even though neither the military or the peasants were intitially against him

In the past I have been a critic of Bush...but the actions of the evil empire the last few weeks is proving him right. The educated people of Iran MUST be embarrassed to hear the drivel of Ahmadinejad. AND the Dear leader of N. Korea seems determined to etch his name in history even if it kills millions.
