HARTFORD, Conn. – A New Jersey blogger who urged readers to "take up arms" against Connecticut lawmakers and who suggested government officials should "obey the Constitution or die" surrendered Thursday on a charge of inciting violence.

No shit. I mean, jesus, this is a no-brainer. He's making death threats against public officials and calling on fellow citizens to resort to armed violence. How did he expect the authorities to respond?

Lawmakers want to give members of Catholic parishes more control over the finances of their church.
That seems pretty reasonalbe to me.  And Hal is asking people to kill over this?  That's pretty messed-up.
I suppose there is some Separation Clause issue here...

On the other hand, I'm very interested in the 1st ammendment implications of this.

There's a joke that fits here:
A man was having a difficult time with a judge in court and so he stood up and asked:

Your honor, what would happen if I were to say "you're an asshole"?
"I would find you in contempt and put you in jail", the judge replied.
What if I only THOUGHT you were an asshole?
The judge said "There would be no penalty - I can't prosecute you for your thoughts."

Then in that case, your honor, I think you're an asshole!

At what point to statements become crimes?

Some statements are crimes. Death threats are chief among them although the charge of inciting violence is more appropriate here.. Libel and slander come to mind, as well. I can sorta buy the guy's hyperbole argument until he threatens to post addresses on his site. Yes, most people could find those on their own. It's okay to be upset with your lawmakers but it's not okay to be an jackass about it.

He thrives on attention.  He likely asked for it. They let this guy slide many times.    He is just a nut.   A clown.  A dingleing.   He rants- but he does so to make it a circus.  Google him.  He has a long history. In fact- I think I see egg on MY FACE over a post per him a while back.  yup.  yours truly fell for his stunt.
