Yes, unbelievably British in terms of oddness, but the British increasingly celebrate the independance of it's former penal colony and dumping ground for anyone unfortunate enough to be out of favour with its churches and monarchy (yes ... the usual fucked up suspects).

Now, I know that the "monarchy" never liked a fight it couldn't win (which one, I hear you ask, take your pick, I say, there's been enough different "monarchies" to pick from) (which might explain why the Yanks won) BUT ... why does this celebration pass without there being troops and guns to police it like the numerous "national day" type celebrations of other cultures in the UK?

Personally, I think it's fantastic that the Brits took a beating and celebrate with a grin (much to "her majesty's" dismay, there are many more "traitors" who are of exactly the same mind)

So I can justify relaxing with a "Bud" (except I don't like it) and joining in with the party, BUT ... what about all the Union Jack waving hypocrites that thing it's great to celebrate having been whupped and sent packing ??? ... very un-British if you ask me!

So now ... a really stupid (just to keep things within TOS) question ....

How fucking stupid are "patriotic" Brits being by celebrating this occasion?

Pirate

(ps: this is not an attempt to get gifted a free Bud or several ... it's really NOT nice)

The only things that get blown up is a few balloons (unfortunately).

They do have lot's of people drinking American beer, moaning how bad it is but still drinking large quantities anyway because it's on special offer ... very "British" behaviour!

I understood it to mean that the Brits had finally gotton used to the idea that getting rid of the colony was the best thing they ever did. Tactical withdrawl rather than giving up, yanno stiff upper lip and all that.
course you wont find many admitting it

Look, we get the smallest number of national holidays of anyone in Europe - we have one at the end of May and then the next is the end of August, so something between the two is welcome (and we're not celebrating Bastille day in any circumstances). The 4th of July just happens to be easy to remember and is conveniently situated in the calendar - and even though we only lost because of the French, we can choose to blame them rather than the Americans without it bothering us overmuch.

However, I have yet to meet any Brits or hear about any who celebrate the day for US independence. Its celebrated here as its the day the first two cats arrived in the house (no fireworks though).

Seriously, if we had gotten rid of the Puritans, I would be celebrating too.

My vote is split between they're just happy to get rid of the damn colonists and they want an excuse to party and drink cheap beer.

It's not even mentioned here in Canada, of course, that could be because everyone is too hung over from Canada Day on the 1st.   However, ironic as it is, we celebrate the 4th of July as the day that Lumus collared me and I gave up my independence to be His.

Would that make it Non-Independence Day in our house?

So many of my US friends have no clue that Canada day is 4 days before Independence day.
Whatever you are and where ever you are, have fun, stay safe and celebrate :)

Oh, we'll celebrate..... ya, ummmm, "celebrate". That's a good word for it!

(We'll be safe, how dangerous can it be to be in bed? Unless yer holly, then anywhere is unsafe.....)

Thanks, Lucy! (BTW, I was wondering if you were calling last night since someone from the GTA called. Then the idiot asked for Annette and insisted she was there. When I kept informing her there was no "Annette" at this residence, she asked if I knew a "Mark XXXXXX" to which my response of "who??" finally clued the dumbass in to realizing she had a wrong number at 11 pm at night. Then I remembered that I don't believe we've exchanged phone numbers yet so I had my own dumbass moment.)

Probably Lady E is closer to the truth ... loads of people so desperate to celebrate anything that involves lots of what you guys call "beer" going cheap.(Tastes like rodent piss to me )

Teach me more of your rodent orientated festivals? (checks calendar to see it's not April Fools day) Does someone pour Budweiser down the hole to force them out?

See how you are Lucy?

Stretching out a one day party into 4?   the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th?

Man the Canooks (sp?)- love to party!!!!    I see how you are!    hicCUP.     ;-0

/seriously- I wish we would lose the fireworks.  It jars my nerves.  Fun at age 20.   Gun fire at age 45....   and of course the poor pets suffer during this.

The Chinese invented gun powder.... 10th century?

I do have 2 buddies up there- I always forget the 1st- I will try not to this time.  :-)
