I have learned that taking OTC which most deem safe to take can aggravate a current problem. While I research prescription drugs it never dawned on me to check the side effects of most otc. Case in point. I have bad allergies and went through not only FL allergies but hit NYC as allergy season was hitting. I took Adviar ventolin rescue inhaler, the Dr said to take zyrtek and claritin, and musinex and benedry when all that didn't work, to get the congestion out of my chest. poen looked up all the side effects of these all these and guess what, all of them had a side effect of affecting the respiratory system (ie lungs) bronchitis, pneumonia, short of breath..ect ect...the side effect were boggling. I was taking these to avoid the above. What ended up happening was I ended up with double pneumonia and six day hospital, 4 of those day it was all I could do to make it the the dreaded bed side potty, that little effort took everything out of me. Since the flu was ruled out (thank god since I had just come from a swine flu hot spot.) it was a toss up what caused it. Could have been viral or another reason. we cam to the conclusion that all the otc weakened my lungs which allowed the pneumonia in. I have now stopped all of the OTC meds. The only thing I am taking is singular and doing peachy. So read or look up the OTC medication you too, it could well just make things worse.
