I breastfed my UM...in private. I never understood what the reason is for doing it in public. There are restrooms, there are private corners, you can have some prepared in a bottle if you're going out.

Imo..time and place for everything.

a private corner with a chair is great...when and if you can find one. And as far as restrooms..imagine eating dinner in a public bathroom. Not too appealing, is it? My child deserves better than that.

I nursed my lil one in public because i had to. I did so discreetly and i will do it again should we have another baby.

My slave had to go to court a few years ago. to finish a divorce matter. During the course of the trial, she asked the judge for a recess, so that she could breast feed our son. Not only was the recess granted, the judge asked her if she wanted some pirvacy because she could clear the courtroom. My slave said no, as she had a nursing blanket. The judge called a recess, and said that anyone that had a problem with being in the courtroom while this mother was nursing her child, could leave. Our son had a problem of pulling on the blanket as well. In a courtroom with Sheriff Deputies, and a Judge, there was not even a blink of an eye about "whipping it out" and feeding a baby.

I think many people make more of it than what it is. Then again there are many people that love to create drama and make more of things than what they are.

I don't have a problem breastfeeding my child in public. We were eating at our favorite barbeque place when my little one wanted to nurse. We are almost done eating when this little old lady walks up wanting to see the baby. I told her that he was at the breast eating his dinner. She looked me dead in the eyes and told me that she thought a breastfeeding baby was the most perfect thing in the world and the look on the childs face was of being totally at peace with the world.

In the case of breasts, women throughout time have known men only think one thing when they look at their chest. This isn't news. So, although nothing a man does is a woman's fault as it pertains to the subject matter, per se....she has a reasonable expectation to think she might be starred at or ogled. It's like that one comedian said "I'm sorry darlin' I was confused by the low cut top and the neon sign pointing at your tits, do I stare, do I not stare? Help me out here."

Guess that rules out cultures that went around topless or with a tit showing.

So while i was stumblin through the intereweb I  came upon an artical about a woman who was asked to leave a local Mcdonalds for breastfeeding her 4-month old. Here is the link to the artical

http://www.kentucky.com/181/story/482335.html (sorry im not sure how to make it a clickable link)

this isnt the first time ive heard about something like this happening, There was a woman in New York who was arrested and charged with puplic lewdness for doing the same thing. My question to yall is how do u feel about public breastfeedings? and to woman how would u react if u were asked not to feed your child in public?

I encourage public breastfeeding....particularly when I'm nearby.

now you know that no matter how hungry you look the best you can hope for her to give you is spare change, right? :P

DesFIP -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 5:36:15 PM)

They do make nursing clothes so you don't have to damn near undress. Beyond that, if I got caught out and had to feed in public, I just tossed a small blanket over us so nobody would stare.

Really it is easy enough to handle for anybody who spends a minute thinking about it.

As far as why you would go out with a newborn? Because the four year old is going to Musical Munchkins and the 8 year old is in a school play. You would be surprised as to how many of us have more than one and thus can't stay home all the time.

SthrnCom4t -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 6:06:52 PM)

I don't have ums. Never wanted any, must lack the gene that calls women to get pregant and pop them out. However, that's just me, and I respect other people's rights. IMO, I'd rather have a law against uncontrollable ums in the movie theater, than discreet breast-feeding.

The truth is, we don't know what that other person's situation is like. Maybe she was on her way back from a pediatrician's office? Maybe her car broke down? Maybe she didn't have A/C at home?

Not every mom with a small um HAS someone to provide for her and treat her like a queen.

Just because an act pushes our personal boundary issues, shouldn't necessarily make it illegal. If it risks our health as a bystander, let's look at the situation closer, but if it just makes us uncomfortable, look away and stop being so judgemental.

My two cents.

I still dont understand how something so natural has somehow, over time, become something to be ashamed of or something worth hiding...or even the fact that people feel the need to voice their opinion.  I never let it bother me...and never felt embarassed.  The only tinge of discomfort I felt was the fact that my (ex) father in law was sitting at a restaurant when I needed to feed, but other than that...I never cared.  I noticed the looks, the "omg can you believe ..." and if I was in a restaurant I'd look, smile and make a comment that would make them feel completely uncomfortable w/o a response. I was always aware that some saw it as a beautiful natural thing, some didnt know what the hades was going on and otheres just couldnt stop staring with a questionable face...those were the ones that didnt know how to mind the ps and qs
If someone doesnt like it, they can always look the other way.

I am thinking that women who have never had children - or who chose (for what ever reason) not to breastfeed, and men in general, have absolutely no right to be posting their opinions on this subject.

Agreed.

Thank you LaT. I have unfortunately received a few direct emails slamming me for my opinion - which was exactly that. MY opinion. We don't have to agree with each other here - that's not the point. Let me look at this another way. I have my own views of abortion (just to stir things up a bit). Have I ever had one? No. Would my point of view change if I were faced with that situation? I don't know - but it very well might. And that is why I don't think some people belong in this discussion - because they have never personally been faced with the decision. Perhaps the whole post could have been better worded .... How do you feel when you see women nursing in public - should they or shouldn't they? How do you feel about nursing your child in public - should you or shouldn't you? There are many points of view - I freely admit that. And to those have have cmailed me - I never meant to hurt anyone - if I had I would have worded my response something like ...... If you've never breastfed a baby - your opinion doesn't count so f*** the hell off ..........

I think it was worded fairly well, she asked two questions:

1. My question to yall is how do u feel about public breastfeedings?
2. and to woman how would u react if u were asked not to feed your child in public?

Anyone who feels the need can answer question 1. The nursing moms can answer question 2 or both.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Breastfeeding, taboo or not (6/16/2009 8:16:45 PM)

Well truly, YDD, much of the planet are non-breeders, including me!  That doesn't mean that they don't need to get a grip and live with kids having to eat, and moms having to feed them!   I know I would have some choice words (and a milk shot to they eye) of anyone who suggested to ME that I couldn't peacefully nurse my child!

Hello brandi,

Now you know what can happen when you have no intention of starting a commotion and ask a simple question here. [:D]

this isnt the first time ive heard about something like this happening, There was a woman in New York who was arrested and charged with puplic lewdness for doing the same thing.

I have known of a local case or 2 where the authorities were called in to intervene. What a ridiculous waste of the officers time and the taxpayer's money!

My question to yall is how do u feel about public breastfeedings?

Breast feeding is a normal, natural part of the human life cycle. Should I be upset that someone sips their water or coffee on the bus?

and to woman how would u react if u were asked not to feed your child in public?

I am not pregnant or nursing but believe that a bit of discretion with a baby blanket goes a long way.

Ok, read a little bit and don't want to read anymore of the *pages* of posts in less than 24 hours right now as it's 2:30am and I really must sleep.

My opinion on Breastfeeding? Do it in the bathroom. Do it in the privacy of your own home. Do it somewhere that, if a nasty breeze took off your covering no one would be able to see your skin that would otherwise be covered.

I'm not a prude or anything like that, really... I just don't see the point of not going to a *secluded* area to breastfeed (and every mother that I've talked to agrees). The merits of breastfeeding aside, it's just not worth the hassle, I'd think, to pop out in the middle of a crowded fast food place, covering or no, and so few places have no public bathrooms that it shouldn't be too difficult to find one close by.

I love LaT and she knows it but I am saddened by this post. This is a public thread. I havent had UM's but I dont agree that I have certainly no right to be posting my opinion on the subject-- what the hell?

What the hell?

My "absolutely no right" to post my opinion, opinion is that we are mammals and we have children who usually and preferably get nourished from their momma's body. Doing it in public is no biggie and the folks that think it is are just unconscious and please get a life on another planet if you dont like this one.

Personally if I had a kid I personally wouldnt feel comfortable doing it without a blanket or something and I do prefer women to breast feed with discretion but at the end of the day it is simply no big deal.

Does me posting this make you love me less LaT?

Edited to add:
