So ive noticed that some part of BDSM is more frequent in the media, mags, movies, tv shows, that kinda thing. I was wondering why do yall think its much more tolerable now then in the past? Have we grown as humans and intelligent people, or is it just something mainstream now like being bi was a couple of years ago?

I think it has to do with the rise in popularity of crime shows.  CSI (all varieties), Law and Order, focus on themes that address kink in different ways, most of them don't have a clue but some are ok.  The counter culture may have adopted the darker (seeming) elements, barbed wire chain, collars and leashes, visible marks (including various piercings), ect.  Ok.. now youth has it so who would like to capitalise on that?  Fashion!  Ads go up on billboards featuring black and white ads suggesting kink.  Magazines not to be outdone prominently display threesomes, and other suggestive scenes.  Stores readily sell slutwear for teens and younger.  And heck, I never heard of so many people being bi-sexual until the last 15 yrs or so.  Now it is trendy to see girls grope each other on dance floors and lick each other on Girls gone wild vids.
We are a society of sheep.  Trends come and go.  This one will be around until the next shock value item grabs our interest.  What you see in the media now does now focuses more on the play and very rarely on the reality.

Personally (& I know this won't be the most popular take on the subject) I see this as continuing evidence of the ongoing liberalization of US society, alongside other indicators like gay marriage . . . . . . I'm a big fan of social progress & moving into a brighter, better future, so I am biased in looking for evidence of that, but in my book it's more pleasant than the alternative of cynicism & being on the alert for evidence of apocalypse & future dystopias . . . . . .

Because kink is  interesting to people ... the media rarely waste time covering stuff unless they think it will sell/increase their ratings.

Sounds to me like the information revolution is going to gradually normalise our fun (does this mean that "vanilla" will one day be viewed as kinky?)

lol

I've been thinking about exactly that for some stories I'm working on, a future where kink is the norm & vanilla is exotic, stigmatized, misunderstood, & all that . . . . . .

I see it as progress, too.  I know many bemoan the current "fashionable" status of things BDSM and it annoys me too sometimes, but the part of it is exposure = information.  Even if a person's experience never comes to anything more than that, they'll come away less fearful and/or wanting to restrict others.  I think it's good.

it is gradually becoming more "accepted".  Everyone knows what it is, even if they don't fully approve.  It's hard to find a TV show where our life isn't mentioned in at least one episode.
