I can't believe that the media even mentioned that he swatted a fly.  I was expecting the PETA article to be from the Onion.  I'm really sorry it wasn't.

It happened during an interview and it was on all the news channels, complete with a close-up of the dead fly.

When you have 24 hours a day to fill you have to report whatever you can get.

Egads!   The things that they put on TV.

I suppose the fly deserves to be treated like we treat Iraqis!!!

(bad joke)

LaTigresse -> RE: PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly (6/18/2009 2:11:54 PM)

Good god no!!! That would create a PETA revolution!! Fly Gitmo wouldn't have lasted a month.

BamaD -> RE: PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly (6/19/2009 12:01:37 PM)

You have to time thier takeoff?  I just snatch them out of the air throw them against the wall and step on them,  how slow are you

Being the UbercoolDominantType I am........I just tell the dogs to get it.

He should have caught the fly with chopsticks. As Miyagi says "Man who catch fly with chopsticks accomplish anything."

pachel -> RE: PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly (6/22/2009 11:04:00 AM)

As stupid as it seems to be up in arms against Obama for killing the fly, PETA has accomplished a goal... people are talking about them and they are in the news. It is nice to see that not everyone is fooled by PETA and their message.

It puzzle me... that Babttist Felps group did not protest at the funeral

Personally I am impressed that he got the bugger. Flies are HARD to swat, they always manage to take off just before I smack them.   Very impressive indeed

my thoughts exactly....that wasn't as easy a feat as one would think!!....[:D]....and personally i also thought it was a nice piece on the Prez being as human as the rest of us.  We don't get many inside looks at the life of those in the White House, and i, for one thoroughly enjoyed seeing the guy swat that pesky fly.  Gave me a peek at his UNPresidential personality....and i STILL like the guy.....[:)].....GO  'BAMA!  GO  'BAMA!  GO  'BAMA.....

TheHeretic -> RE: PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly (6/26/2009 5:46:25 PM)

It was staged.  The fly was drugged.  Just another "media event."

If you capture the flies, and dress them up in some nice pseudo Arabian nights outfits, they can make for wonderful Gorean slaves [8D] .

"This is the group that also believes that pet ownership is cruel."

Then why is it on an occasion or two when I've been hanging with a Lesbian friend with her big healthy dog on a leash enjoying lattes,  a PETA - tard walks up and asks HER for money?

What the fuck is up with THAT?

It's like a Scientoligist asking Carl Jung to buy his sorry ass a drink because he can't get laid despite what Tom Cruise promised.

FangsNfeet -> RE: PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly (6/27/2009 9:25:46 PM)

I think I'll send Obama a Venus Fly Trap.

How can PETA be upset about a nature made fly trap verus a man made Katcha?

Vendaval -> RE: PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly (6/27/2009 10:40:55 PM)

Marc,

I don't know whether to be impressed or rather concerned that you have studied this process in such detail.

Give me an electronic zapper that fries them with a satisfying WizzzZap!
on contact anyday. [:D]

The trick is to strike when they are rubbing their front legs together. Flys take off by leaping and they need all six legs down to do so. Striking when they do the leg rubbing thing gives you an extra half second. The two handed clap has a higher success rate then the single handed strike. For best results, bring your hands up a little as you strike. The fly will take off when he sees the movement so you need a little elevation to get him (to use a military term, you need to lead him).

DavanKael -> RE: PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly (6/27/2009 10:45:08 PM)

As someone who wouldn't intentionally kill a fly, just want to interject that PETA is an extremist, insane organization that is an affront to the cause of animal welfare.  Also, they're an organization rife with hypocricy: more animals taken into their 'care' are killed than at most high-kill shelters in America.  It is a shame that PETA is the face that most people place on the animal welfare movement.

There are two kinds of living beings, plants and animals.  Plants have cell walls, are anchored to a surface, usually the earth, and usually produce their own food via photosynthesis.  Animals are mobile, their cells have no cell walls, and they do not produce their own food.

ALL insects are part of the animal kingdom.  No exceptions.

SoulPiercer -> RE: PETA wishes Obama hadn't swatted that fly (6/28/2009 8:27:04 AM)

We humans are a strange lot.

In order to save the whales, we will attack a whaling vessel and risk killing the crew of humans, not to mention polluting the ocean when the ship sinks carrying who knows what.

In order to save babies, we will blow up an abortion clinic and risk killing the adults inside.

Now everytime a fly or spider is killed in a movie, we'll have to see the disclaimer "No insects or arachnids were killed during the making of this film."

How many freaking stunt spiders did they use in Arachnaphobia?

Tons actually. They controlled them with pheremones. I saw a 'making of' bit on that movie once. They were actually real spiders.
