Marc,

I don't know whether to be impressed or rather concerned that you have studied this process in such detail.

Give me an electronic zapper that fries them with a satisfying WizzzZap!
on contact anyday.

The knowledge was acquired during my high school years. No air conditioning meant a lot of flies, especially in the cafeteria. During lunch and study halls, we would amuse ourselves by seeing who could kill the most.

I got pretty good but the record for most flies killed during one period was set by a friend of mine - 39.

Does anyone take PETA seriouly except for the trendy "Animals are cute crowd?" Every person I know that's vegan or in an animal rights movement hates PETA because they're a fake enviromental group who kills around 90% of the animals that they take in. Besides, I don't know anyone who hasn't had some kind of sick pleasure from smacking a giant fly that's been buzzing your head all day.

I swatted and splatted my way through 32 large meat flies last night, and managed another 5 this morning. My chosen weapons were my tennis racquet (otherwise unused for years due to arthritis) and a rolled up copy of the Chronicle (a local newspaper also useful to line kitty litter trays but not much else).

Assuming I had done this in the US, would I be liable for prosecution by PETA?

Now it should be noted that the house also has half a dozen static, slow release insecticide stations - this may have rendered my victims less able to escape my murderous rampage I accept. The effects of the poison are deadly, eventually - the fly suffers what is a slow and probably distressing demise.

Given this, and the quick execution I provided, assuming I provided it in the USA, would I be in line for a PETA award for minimising the suffering of the flies?

E
