I've been having scenes with this Canadian that goes to school here in Oregon. He's working on his Master's in Computer-something! Well, every few weeks he has to go back to Canada for a week or so and then come back here to school. He'd like to stay permanently, but says he can't. I'm not sure if he's just lacks ambition and is just lazy or what.

I've gone to the website of HomeLand security and Immigrations, but can't figure it out. Can any of the people out there give me a clue as to what has to be done for a Canadian to reside here in the States permanently? In simple terms!

Sorry Sir, but this requires an INS-experienced attorney. Failing that, You might try contacting the local office of Your U.S. Senator or Congressperson.

Marriage to a U.S. citizen perhaps?

i would love to find out how a US citizen can become a citizen of Canada...or maybe even Australia. America is falling apart and it would be nice to move elsewhere

To become a permenant resident, you have to obtain a "green card." The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website would be a good place to start.

Unfortunatly no. I've worked with Canandians who have not only married USA citizens, but also had children with them. Even after those events and 10 years later, they are still waiting for Citizenship and continue to stay here due to there work Visa.

According to rumor and some conspiricy, it's more difficult for a Canadian to become a USA citizen because the Canadian government harbered draft dodgers during the Vietnam War.

For whatever the reason, it does suck for a Canadian to work so hard for citizenship in the USA having a job, husband, children, and being honest with no criminal activity when a terrorist can fly an aircraft into the Twin Towers and recive his Green Card less than six months later.

I'd be more interested in how a US citizen can reside in Canada than how one can move here.

No idea other than getting a green card just as everyone else in the world has to do to stay in the United States.
Year's ago I was negotiating with a Canadian national. He was working down here...He only went back once every three month's for a weekend to visit his mother and father.
If I had chosen him, he was prepared to move here full time. I'll ask him how he had planned on making this happen. If he has anything to add that hasn't been added already I'll post it.

If he is a student in the US and can show proof of being a student there she should be able to get a student Visa. People do it all the time. I'm kind of surprised he didn't do this already since going back and forth is a huge inconvenience....then again, maybe he's not really a student?

Now that I am over my shock at seeing these words, I would like to respond. I am not trying to hi-jack this thread but Michael, I have to say that if everyone believed what you believe we wouldnt have a country to live in. Jumping ship is not the answer. If you dont like what is happening to America, then try to do something to fix it. Moving out is the easy way out.

What is wrong with people today?

Becoming a citizen somewheres else will not be as dificult of getting rid of your USA citizinship. USA is not only the hardest country to become a citizin but also the hardest to have your citizinship denounced where you no longer have to pay taxes to the USA.

Even Bobby Fisher is still considered a Citizen of the USA by USA policy. Infact, you can be exiled from the USA and still be considered under dual citizenship.

Maybe his reasons that he "can't" stay have nothing to do with immigration procedures and citizenship, but maybe something more like family THERE, or wife & kids???

If you would like a human voice to speak to regarding immigration laws vs. the INS's keypad bingo, check out the link I am including.

They are a Boston based immigration advocacy group who may have some connections in your area. They handle immigration law and assist in immigration from all countries, despite the name. You will be able to speak to person who will point you in the right direction.

Immigration is going to be tough for your friend. If your friend just happens to fall in love and marry an American citizen in the US, NOT in Canada, than the process is easy. Immed. green card, after two years of being married they are granted perm. residency. At which time, if for some inexplicable reason the marriage is failing, they could seek a divorce. < i believe it is still two years, but may have changed in the last four years> If they were to marry in Canada it is a long and tedious process. There are two other ways for a Canadian to get residency, but it is tedious and takes a long time.

PS: perm residency is not US citizenship and citizenship is not a requirement of perm. residency.

My parents have done this. They are Canadian citizens, but now they live in Florida where My dad now works. It is not an easy process, but for him it started with a student visa. After he finished school he had to wait for a year for a Green Card. I cannot remember what else he had to do, but they do not let just anyone move from Canada to the USA, this much I know for sure. He still has a substantial income coming from Canada as well as his job in the States, so they did not seem to give him as hard a time letting him stay. Next time I talk to him I will ask him what he had to do.

To become a resident of the USA:
Shoot somebody.

To become a resident of Australia:
Get drunk, and shoot yourself in the foot.

PS Only joking. ;)

actually, it's more like this:

to become a citizen of Austrailia you have to travel to the outback, wrestle a croc, get drunk, shoot yourself in the foot and then...throw another shrimp on the barbie...LOL

G'day, Mate

(just kidding)
