And so we in Britain are at last to have an inquest into the government advocating war based upon erroneous information, but behind closed doors, obviously to protect the guilty, as why else, what could be of such national security importance so as to keep it from the voter.

But, aside from that when all the politicians finally gave the nod to the sending of voter's families into a war based on lies, really their conscience aside, war was it really going to affect them. They were not the ones out there fighting and dying, but I wonder how many politicians families were directly involved in the conflict, how many sons and daughters of the politicians are out there, either been or going. Could it be those that we have elected to govern us are seperate from what the voter does, as it does not directly affect them or their families, they can sit at home and rob the public purse, the killing fields not really their concern, it doesn't hurt them.

Just out of interest then, of the politicians in the UK and the US, does anyone know if there are active politicians with families directly involved in the wars that are going on ?

Sure. The Vice President, Joe Biden, comes to mind. His son is serving in Iraq, or was until recently. There are several other members of congress who have children in Iraq as well, but I don't recall all of their names offhand. Nobody from the Bush or Cheney families, of course; they must have other priorities.

Termyn8or -> RE: Politician's families (6/19/2009 7:55:22 AM)

It's done a bit differently here. Typically a politician with war age offspring will send the males off to ROTC or some military school before they actually "serve". Others are sent to the military and get their tour of duty over with before having to really put their ass on the line. Like "serving" in Germany. Some have to resort to college deferrments but that requires good grades, so the kids would be unfit for politics.

Case in point : What rank was McCain when he was a POW, a Private ? I think not. Others become pilots and move on to become pushbutton heroes. The few that are left have to use influence and money to keep the kids out of harm's way.

I don't know how they handle the problem there, but that's how it is done here. I would suspect the process is similar.

Well, for a start, the biggest advocate for an unjust war being Tony Blair, his son was not in the military, I just wonder how many of the deciders are the same.

I believe that Sarah Palins son left for Irac during the campaign last summer. John McCain also has a son in the military..

I believe two Congressmen here in Missouri were members of the reserves and served a tour in Iraq....But as a volunteer army it is up to the individual to serve or not. To me it would not be the fault of the father or mother if a child did not serve in a war they supported.

Butch

sorry in reply to the op

Does the Army still have drug testing?

Agreed. There are a great many things my father and I disagree on, and I am sure my own kids do not agree with me on a few. (they just refrain from telling me for some reason......)

The one big thing that really bugs me is when politicians blow up their military career, or their adult child's, to make it out to be more than it is, for political gain. Like our last president. Lord knows, I shuddered at the idea of McCain being president but there is no challenging the depth of his military service and his dedication to his country.

Lets not forget the other side of the aisle. When John Kerry ran for President, he never gave a speech with mentioning that he served in Viet Nam, then refused to release any military records..

Mayor Daley of Chicago.  His son is in the golf.

I do not know all the facts on that, therefor I declined to comment. I only remember a lot of noise about it. Nothing proven on either side of the political bitchfest.
