My friend told me about this item and I wondered if anyone here had experience of them?
I also thought people might be interested in them as well.
In short, it's menstrual care that is 'eviromentally friendly'.

I've not seen those here... but they look better than the cup things we had (have?) here..I forget what they were called, but it pretty much required mining yourself to get them in or out.. so I went back to tampax......

Greedy, you can get Keepers and the Diva cup in the States. There's several different ones available, either online or at health food stores. There's one that I've heard doesn't work that well but I've used a Diva cup for years and love it. Because it's medical-grade silicone, it lasts for up to 10 years, well worth the initial expense of $35.

Looking at the.dark's link, I see that the MoonCup is very similar to my Diva cup. I found for myself that switching over to them from tampons took a little getting used to but it also helped minimize my cramps and has been a lot better for me.

So they have my vote!!

the ones I've seen here are basically just latex cups, shaped nothing like the moon cup... more of a concave design. Hated them.

Blechhhhhh, I would too if that's all they were. Talk about messy. I was nervous about switching to the Diva but after a while it was fine. If I remember another thread right, I think Gwyn also used the Diva..... pre-Gabe!

I have used the Diva Cup for some time now, and after the initial period of getting used to it, I am very happy with this solution. As Rain, I have found that it minimizes my cramps.

I ordered mine directly from the website and have never regretted it.

No leakage issues? That would be my hesitation to try anything like this.

Once or twice at the beginning, while I was still figuring the handling out. But having anticipated that, I doubled up until I had it down (no longer than the first period).
Since then, the cup has been reliable and leakage free. Better on that front than tampons, especially during the night, or on occasions where there was a slightly longer stretch between changes.

I've used a couple types menstrual cups... First the Instead which were interesting but not great. Then the Keeper which worked absolutely wonderfully and now, after years and years, a DivaCup (silicone version of the Keeper). And again, just wonderful.

My period used to be debilitating: 7 days of chills, fevers, nausea, tunnel vision, crippling cramps, et cetera. Then I stopped using commercial tampons and pads (I still use the occasional cloth pad) and all of that stopped... til one day I didn't have my cup handy and put in a tampon when my period started and I was having all those symptoms again before I'd walked 20 feet out of the bathroom. Since that I've only used my cup and washable pads and I now have a normal, even forgettable, period with cramps that -at their very worst- have me decide to take a motrin... I no longer NEED painkillers of heavy sorts to just -literally- crawl to the bathroom and back.

The cup takes a little learning, but unlike tampons it can be practiced when you're not on your period and can be put in when you just think menstruation is about to start (I have a wandering period due to perimenopause, so I put the cup in if I seem to be having "warning cramps" of impending bleeding).

It stays in place during all sorts of activities/sports with no leakage (the only time it's ever leaked on me is when I was dumb and forgot to empty it when it was due).

Once practiced at putting it in it's very easy -while I don't often drink I *have* had to put it in while poorly-functioning-drunk once or twice in the past 11 years and it went in with no problem. Now, due to the little bit of dryness I have due, again, to perimenopause, I find putting a little lube on the rim makes it go in easier but I didn't need that in younger years.

On my very heaviest days it needs emptied every 10 hrs or so. On normal it's about every 12-14, so there is some flexibility there where I've only a couple times ever needed to empty it someplace other than home/private bathroom.

It's sturdy, doesn't tend towards being messy, and convenient. As said, I shifted over about 10 years or so ago and wouldn't go back to pads and tampons... when my Keeper started looking a little old there was no question of going out and getting a similar cup (I went with a DivaCup instead of another Keeper because I wanted to try the newer silicone type, nothing against The Keeper).

I tried the Keeper, but it just didn't work for me (leakage, difficult to insert). Now, I use Instead. they recommend throwing them away after using them once, but I wash them with soap and water and use one for a few months. I haven't tried the silicone version of the Keeper yet.

There's also sea sponges that you can use as a tampon. with those, you have to remember to take it out and rinse it out. One time, mine was full, I laughed at something, and squeezed the sponge, and gush!

I tried Instead when it first came out. It would dislodge if I sneezed.
Went back to pads, because like Rumpus, tampons gave me cramps.

I'm curious about this method. I still use pads and have all my life. Tampons and I don't get along. When I was in highschool, my periods were to heavy or I wasn't good at getting the tampons positioned right. Anyway, I always had leakage with tampons. So...it's pads but I may consider doing this or getting the cloth pads. Be nice to save some money...and a trip to the grocery store halfway through my cycle for more pads.

I use insteads, been thinking about switching to a more permanent silicone cup. I find them quite comfortable, they never leak, and my periods are much less of a hassle. Good luck with your mooncup!

Instead was definitely, for me, more awkward than the Keeper or DivaCup and they were a bit too long for my vagina... they wouldn't lock in place properly behind my pubic bone, I had to pop into a bathroom now and then sometimes to adjust them. They were an intersting change but not a permanent solution for me... even when they were staying in I felt like they were going to try and escape.

I had huge issues with all of these methods, so I went right back to pads and tampons. No matter what I did they always felt like they were slipping and leaking...I kinda wish it had worked for me, but it didnt.

I'm really really sensitive down there and I decided it's too much wrangling for me to deal with. My experience with them was being in a scene where one of my fellow Ladies incorporated menstrual play and was wearing a cup...the thing was hard to remove and required a lot of um, digging. If you don't have the same sensitivity problem, I guess you'll be fine?

So i tried this mooncup this months period...

It did not anything to relieve my cramps...they start about two hours before i start bleeding so i did not really think it would anyway, pain killers usually give me relief with that.

It was not too difficult to insert and once in sat comfortable... getting it back out was more of an issue as the thing seemed to move up while i was wearing it and it took indeed quite a bit of patience, pushing and pulling to get it out
As i had to cut off the 'stem' bit as that would irritate while wearing it. It was difficult to get hold of, messy.

I had to change it every four hours at the heaviest time; the whole experience was way more 'rough' on my soft inner parts than tampax with insert tubes ever was...i could relate to the inserting a frisbee and the 'mining' excersize to get it out... it is unlikely that i would ever be confident enough to do this in a public toilet or even just at a friends house, messy

The last day i think the whole experience has irritated/ overstimulated my G spot as it is totally swolen and there is a constant feeling that i have to pee...it is highly annoying and i have taken painkillers again and drunk a river so as i actually do have to pee and not only suffer this awful feeling with no relief... does anybody else have this problem?

Ranja - that there sounds like a UTI. You may want to see a doctor for some antibiotics if it hasn't cleared up by now. The cup probably wasn't a good size/shape for you, or you had it positioned wrong.

As for your cramps, I strongly recommend Aleve - two pills (not one, like the package says) at the reccomended intervals starting as soon as you know you're about to start your period until they normally go away. Bleeding will be lighter, cramps should be much less of a problem. My gyno prescribed this for me, my mother, and my sister, and says it used to be pretty standard use when it was prescription only. You also might want to get checked out for Ovarian Cysts if you get really bad cramps, particularly if they're localized on only one side of your abdomen. Birth control will clear that up, if that's the case.
