Jesus christ, this train wreck just can't get any funnier than this! I can't remember the last time I laughed so fucking hard!!! [sm=biggrin.gif][sm=biggrin.gif]

You have no idea. No one is going to believe either of us. God this sucks.

Well, you've got to admit, it doesn't look really good. And i don't mean to rub your nose in it, but man - I'm sure there's also a part of you that's got to admit it's funnier than hell! Sorry, but I just can't help laughing my ass off!

I will laugh my ass off at some other time... Actually it is funnier than hell.

These message boards really need a Hall of Fame. Really.

QE, don't sweat it, man. Get a good night's sleep, and it won't feel anywhere near so catastrophic in the morning. Trust me.

Now I could make a comment about split personalities and the inability to properly consent... heh heh heh. Who will save you????

Dude, I know you think you have the biggest aha moment of your life, but you don't

no, the biggest aha moment I've ever had was when I first read the opening chapters of Mises' Human Action.

this was, however, a pretty big haha moment.

God, it burns my ass to have to agree with you

variation30 -> RE: On addiction and D/s (7/2/2009 9:54:24 PM)

well...we now know that anything you say is to be utterly ignored.

Look you are just being really mean and really petty now. I really am sitting here, and I totally screwed up. I made us both look like fools and I am so sorry, but please don't be horrible.

I am sorry.

I am so sorry.

I messed up.

LOL, very funny, at least you have a cute female in your home QE.

To your fourth point QE or SS, debate is a manner to discuss different opinions. It can change minds if the debater are openminded enough to look outside of their own beliefs and brave enought to accept they might be wrong. Of course, it is unlikely they will admit that while in the middle of the debate. I have spent all week at a conference having my results and those of others constructively criticised and it will imporve all our work. It doesn't always have to be taken so negatively.

Responsibility does start and end with the person making the choice. There can be reasons why they made that choice that involve other people but the only one an individual can blame for any particular choice is themselves. Now, if someone hasn't specifically consented to a certain activity the responsibility lies with the individual initiating that activity. How much responsibility really depends on the circumstances.

Fifth, I am not pissed off by your opinions. They are yours. They do not affect my opinions or my emotional state at all. In fact the debate is interesting (and amusing in parts) that is all.

Your sixth point implies that the opinion about personal responsibility is an immoral one. It is not. I do not think opinions can be immoral, only actions and I consider the infringement on someones right to make a choice about their own bodies to be immoral.

I think this thread's probably jumped the shark at this point.

I thought it sparked some interesting questions, though. It got me wondering about people who are commonly considered to have addictive personalities, and whether people with such personalities might be predisposed to seek out the more intense physical and emotional sensations associated with extreme BDSM activities not because they're necessarily wired to be kinky, but simply because kinky sex is more intense. I'd be curious to see the discussion take a little side trip in that direction, but at this point i have to wonder if this thread is a viable avenue for that topic to follow. Maybe a different thread would be best?

See, I agree with this, but I don't differentiate about what -kind- of drugs we're talking about. Prescription, street, alcohol, caffeine... and it doesn't matter about what the activity is, and whether it's socially sanctioned or socially uncomfortable.

I think we're on the same page here - my concern is for the *level* of impairment - I also brought up developmental disabilities and severe mental illness which certainly have nothing to do with the people involved doing things that are illegal. If someone is drunk, or under the influence of legal, prescribed medication, they can also have their ability to consent affected.

I tend to perceive street drugs as being particularly strong/potent in that respect, but since I haven't used them, that may not be based in fact. I'm just saying that whatever does affect their judgement and reflexes and thinking, it's taking advantage of them to top them or have sex with them. They may not be able to consent to topping, either, but the person who is being topped is in more danger, in that situation.

I got drunk once from a piece of Italian rum cake, passed out on the couch (didn't even make it to bed) 10 minutes later, and was oblivious to attempts to wake me the next day. Vicodin (which was prescribed to me once) just made me throw up, but tylenol with codeine (also prescribed) made me feel like I was floating, and really affected my balance, coordination, reflexes, and judgement. I wasn't in any condition to drive a car, and would not have been able to consent to sex or BDSM. Other people have higher tolerance for various things, I'm sure. I also think that someone who is slightly impaired/inebriated can more meaningfully consent to sex or play with someone who they are in a relationship or at least know each others' limits and desires very well, whereas it's more risky to do that with a stranger.
