Illegal acts by a sworn public official should matter. Then again many things should matter but people keep letting our public servants off the hook. I view a violation of oath of office the same, it is a violation of an oath.

It will be up to the people of SC to determine, or aoth authorities that may have jurisdiction (I am not familiar with the SC Constitution).

I certainly dont classify prostitution (or pot smoking, or...) on the same level as grand larceny. And I dont think the general public does, either.  Yes, its breaking the law, but like I said, many laws are arbitrary and many laws dont make sense with their hypocracy. Why would we classify a prostituttion rap as more 'criminal' than failing the public trust by someone on that elected level?  To me, the bigger crime is the latter, not the former.  The 'illegal' prostitution angle didnt matter for Vitter or Craig (who are still in office), so why should it matter with Spitzer?

It is part of our double standardization:

Sexual faux pas..

Republican:   For Shame....Resign...
Democrat:  Street Cred

Alinksy had it pegged with:
RULE 4: "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules." If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules. (This is a serious rule. The besieged entity's very credibility and reputation is at stake, because if activists catch it lying or not living up to its commitments, they can continue to chip away at the damage.) and
RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)

He could resign like Spitzer did, or stay in office like Clinton did..
Or...and this is just a thought,Republican leadership could apologise for putting everyone thru that moralistic travesty of Impeachment Hearings in the case of one William Jefferson Clinton.
Its either that....or keep their own fucking zippers closed!

HatesParisHilton -> RE: Should Sanford resign like Spitzer did? (6/25/2009 11:41:39 PM)

No, don't let him resign!  How can he fuck up again even worse Anne Heche Style/Andy Dick style if we let him RESIGN?!

Don't throw away perfectly good LANDMINES!  That's like stopping Palin from more INTERVIEWS!

DarkSteven -> RE: Should Sanford resign like Spitzer did? (6/26/2009 5:46:06 AM)

He's a governor who couldn't even work with his own party in his state, and they were the majority party.
He's held himself up as a shining example of morality for decades and freely criticized others.
He was too moral to accept stimulus money, but used state money for a trip to Argentina last year.
There will be books about this within a few months,  If he's really unlucky, a movie or TV miniseries.  It won't help the GOP is he's still in office then.

Last and certainly not least - if he really wants to reconcile, he'll need family time to do it.

He sounds like an overgrown spoiled kid, and his wife sounds like an absolute gem.  If I were him, I'd be out of office in a heartbeat.  If he stays, he'll be a laughingstock and then a has-been.

servantforuse -> RE: Should Sanford resign like Spitzer did? (6/26/2009 5:55:26 AM)

Clinton didn't go through an impeachment because of a B J in the oval office. It happened because he lied under oath to a Federal grand jury. A big difference.

What do the people of SC PRAGMATICALLY gain if Sanford resigns?

I dont quite see the 'Republcan gets hanged, Democrat walks away' theme that you imply exists.

My bad. I meant Italy in my previous post... For some reason, I have France on the brain these days. (Probably because I'm thinking of going there next year.)

KaineD -> RE: Should Sanford resign like Spitzer did? (6/27/2009 4:04:12 AM)

Yeah Sanford's affair began before Obama's election, so that makes no sense.

HatesParisHilton -> RE: Should Sanford resign like Spitzer did? (6/27/2009 4:19:49 AM)

The answer is obvious,  A new roll of the dice.

The state was getting close to gridlock anyway.  The Sanford mess will exacerbate it.

Edited to add:  The local newspaper had copies of his emails to his mistress (don't ask me how they got them) since DECEMBER.  Why did they sit on the emails till now?

HatesParisHilton -> RE: Should Sanford resign like Spitzer did? (6/27/2009 5:47:17 AM)

I understood the "new roll" bit beforehand.  I don't know the specific name of whomever will step in, what their policies and personal soapboxes would be.

If he resigns, will there not be a chance for the gridlock to be forcibly "crowbarred"?

MissJanice2 -> RE: Should Sanford resign like Spitzer did? (6/27/2009 5:55:07 AM)

It looks like Sanford just destroyed his political career.   As far to the answer to your questions, there will  have to be an investigation.  His own republicans are calling for one to determine if he violated any laws.
Being a residence of this state for all my life, I cannot believe he walked off his job and no one knew where he was.  His wife is moving on.
According to Sanford this morning, he is doing soul searching to determine if should resign.  The state is calling for his resignation; however, the liutenant governor is just as bad.    Lt Gov Baur has been convicted of a couple of DUI's during his time in off.
If they put Lyndsey Graham in as Gov, I will puke.  Every one of these faught against Bill Clinton, and should be gentlemen of the state.  Guess not.
Let justice be done.

Best Wishes,

Mistess_Jan

Thanks.  Sounds like SC's choices are as fucked as our own here across the globe.

My condolences.

Concerning a blow job in the Oval Office....questions that should never have been posed by a grand jury...except of course as a political witch hunt....and if you can't see that try taking off the partisan blinders.

Interesting take.   I guess I should put up a joke flag from now on for those that are way too serious to get a grip.

But hey, then I could use a Special Pleading in the future too....

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Should Sanford resign like Spitzer did? (6/27/2009 6:49:02 PM)

I thought those questions were asked because of an investigation of perjury and asking people to commit perjury in the Paula Jones case?

FangsNfeet -> RE: Should Sanford resign like Spitzer did? (6/27/2009 9:20:03 PM)

Weither he took a hike to clear his thoughts, a boat cruise for a steamy affair, or a trip to the mars to bring back Marvins helmet, he left his State without anyone knowing. Anything could have happened and he left no chain of command in charge. The Lt Govenor needs to know what's going on so any State of Emergency can be acted on ASAP!

The disapering act is careless, selfish, and does not demonstrate the qualities of a good leader.
