Illegal acts by a sworn public official should matter. Then again many things should matter but people keep letting our public servants off the hook. I view a violation of oath of office the same, it is a violation of an oath. He's a governor who couldn't even work with his own party in his state, and they were the majority party. He's held himself up as a shining example of morality for decades and freely criticized others. He was too moral to accept stimulus money, but used state money for a trip to Argentina last year. There will be books about this within a few months, If he's really unlucky, a movie or TV miniseries. It won't help the GOP is he's still in office then. Last and certainly not least - if he really wants to reconcile, he'll need family time to do it. He sounds like an overgrown spoiled kid, and his wife sounds like an absolute gem. If I were him, I'd be out of office in a heartbeat. If he stays, he'll be a laughingstock and then a has-been.

Clinton didn't go through an impeachment because of a B J in the oval office. It happened because he lied under oath to a Federal grand jury. A big difference.

I understood the "new roll" bit beforehand. I don't know the specific name of whomever will step in, what their policies and personal soapboxes would be. If he resigns, will there not be a chance for the gridlock to be forcibly "crowbarred"?

It looks like Sanford just destroyed his political career. As far to the answer to your questions, there will have to be an investigation. His own republicans are calling for one to determine if he violated any laws. *Being a residence of this state for all my life, I cannot believe he walked off his job and no one knew where he was. His wife is moving on.* According to Sanford this morning, he is doing soul searching to determine if should resign. The state is calling for his resignation; however, the liutenant governor is just as bad. Lt Gov Baur has been convicted of a couple of DUI's during his time in off. *If they put Lyndsey Graham in as Gov, I will puke. Weither he took a hike to clear his thoughts, a boat cruise for a steamy affair, or a trip to the mars to bring back Marvins helmet, he left his State without anyone knowing. Anything could have happened and he left no chain of command in charge. The Lt Govenor needs to know what's going on so any State of Emergency can be acted on ASAP! The disapering act is careless, selfish, and does not demonstrate the qualities of a good leader.
