"Reporting from Washington -- The Obama administration has begun sending arms aid to the beleaguered government of Somalia, officials said Thursday, in an escalation of its commitment to one of the world's most troubled states. "

Better to send arms instead of warm bodies.

Ain't even gonna read the article..........NO FOOD WAS SENT.  If it claims there is, then it is like the 5,000 and the fish and loaf of bread.

People whose bellies are full, don't make war (see Sun Tzu, Clauswitz, I Ching, Tao Te Ching, et al)

Somalia does need more guns. They just have to be in the hands of the people fighting the terrorists in the Country, instead of the terrorists. AlQuaida is alive and well there.

Better to send arms than the entire body.

So with the government more inept than ours (Oh, calumny!!!!)  We send over some weapons so they can fight, they get the shit slapped outta them and the weapons are now in the hands of Somalian Pirates.

Yeah, weapons, Yeah..........Yeah, that sounds logical.

The real motivation is stated in this passage, "U.S. officials and their allies fear that a victory by the Shabab extremist group and other insurgents would further destabilize the region, and make the country a safe haven for international terrorist groups".

Aid to refugee camps and safe passage for those fleeing the fighting will also likely become a U.S. military operation.

The arms shipments are seperate, and I can see why they are sending them, but will it help stabilize or just keep the balance? I have looked into the Somolia efforts ebfore, and I am not sure of the exact goals of any country that has tried to involved itself there.

Africans should be handling this problem; they stand to lose the most with instability.  Ethiopia did a pretty good job when they invaded the country awhile back, but they didn't stay.  A multinational, African force would be helpful.  Also, their fellow Muslims whose ships are also being attacked should get off their asses and do something.  Moderate Muslims really need to make a collective effort to rid their ranks of the loonies among them.

I don't know enough about the specifics in Somalia to answer that well. But it is easy enough for one group or the other to raid an arms shipment and turn the guns on the civilians.

I agree with this sentiment.

Moderate Muslims really need to make a collective effort to rid their ranks of the loonies among them.

But isn't that the basic problem between moderates and extremists, how far one side is willing to go to control or eliminate the other? Usually the extremeists will resort to violence first and the moderates will try negotiation at the beginning.
