(I'm definitely not trying to troll as much as this will seem like I am, but whatevs)

Does the whole Gorean philosophy/lifestyle seem to be like a bdsm version of Scientology?

A lifestyle based upon the words of a science fiction author, seemingly ridiculous to any outsider who catches a glimpse of it...

So yeah, am I the only one who has drawn a parallel to the two?

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Now... is it just me...? (6/26/2009 9:15:18 PM)

Not a troll huh? Really?

So you read about this thing you speak of? Genuiningly asked questions to try and understand it?

Did you know that sci-fi author is actually a Professor of Philosophy?

If the only place you learned of it is on-line, via chatrooms, websites and second life, then I agree it is pretty ridiculous.

SteelofUtah -> RE: Now... is it just me...? (6/26/2009 9:16:54 PM)

Just depends on who you look at when you refer to Gorean.

The Guys online who do a version of Roleplay D&D Style Kinky Text based eroticism without the aide of 20 sided die?

Or People like Iron Bear and to some degree myself who see it as a Philosophy of life, I code of Honor and respect in which your integrity is shown in everything you do?

See the Problem with making an assessment like this is that there is a duality to the Insanity.

Tom Cruise makes Scientology look Creepy and Psycho, however if you to someone who is involved who isn't an ADVOCATE of it, it becomes a little easier to swallow.

In the end the question is are either extereme Wrong?

If it makes you happy to be a Sceintologist or a Gorean Jarl then who is getting hurt by it?

The funny thing is that when you remain closed minded about it you fail to learn anything from it. I learned so much from the Gorean PHILOSOPHY, and I hold much of it with me today, there is an underlined concept to the Philosophy of Honor and Self Discipline that I find amazing.

I do not considermyself a Gorean nor am I a Scientologist. However I don't judge either as positive or negative they just are.

Steel

If you believe I'm so ignorant, then please enlighten me....

Why would it not seem almost entirely ridiculous to any outsider exposed to the philosophies?

I could be entirely off-base. I only know what I've read on here, I drew a conclusion, and was wondering if anyone else had reached the same one. And honestly... teaching philosophy means next to nothing. That may be the most worthless degree one could procure. But anyhow...

Beyond the BDSM aspects of it, what exactly is the code of honor and respect involved within Goreanism? I always love to learn about new belief structures :D

SteelofUtah -> RE: Now... is it just me...? (6/26/2009 9:28:30 PM)

A better direction would be for you to expand on what you THINK you know about the Gorean Lifestyle so as that those who are in the know can deal with any preconceived notion that you may be holding that could cloud any new information that you are asking to receive.

Of course BDSM,  is so easy for outsiders to understand.....[8|]mmmkay....

I honestly wonder op why the world needs to justfy what happens in some ones bedroom.  the world needs to but out.  If you honestly look for approval or acceptance from the world for what you do or do not do you will never find it ......................and Steel I will never grow tired of reading your responces

I actually think that most (not all of course) people do have fantasies that involve some degree of dominance and submission. Granted, most would involve things that don't occur outside of the bedroom, but still... from vanilla people I've spoken to, MOST of what occurs in BDSM relationships is not too hard for them to relate to.

i hadn't realized Dr.Kinsey...all apologies.

Why in the world would being a "Professor of Philosophy" help any argument regarding BDSM? Getting a masters does not validate his ability to influence peoples lives, especially with a set of almost 30 science fiction books where people actually try to reenact roles in sci-fi books.

Oh god. I pretty much agree. I'm almost at the stage of doing something like that with the Harry Potter books, but I haven't quite figured out how. I'm having a hard time casting my Xenu and kajiri.

The idea that people are willing to immerse themselves in a stack of sci-fi books where many of them give up pretty much everything they have (land, money/rights) in order to live in the worlds that Science Fiction authors created? Yeah, I'd pay to watch.

Life Roleplay ftl.

Because Gorean Philosophy has nothing to do with BDSM. It has to do with, well, philosophy and living day to day life.

Don't worry. You're completely forgiven.

Just don't let it happen again.

Nearly any lifestyle "has to do with" philosophy.  BDSM is extremely philosophical, and I'd wager people with master degrees have written books about the way of life. I just can't understand how it redeems Gor of its ridiculous ways.

SteelofUtah -> RE: Now... is it just me...? (6/26/2009 9:45:57 PM)

Orion, I would not necessarily agree.

Gorean Philosophy has elements of Bondage, Dominance, Submission, and SadoMasochism. It is just not the overall goal of Gorean Philosophy.

Gorean Philosophy takes a more Gender Specific definition of Dominance and surrender and the Fall of the Western Civilization and WHY it fell and the belief that Integrity and Honor are things that are required to be a functioning member of any society and that a Role of Dominance is complimented by a aspect of surrender that flows to the understanding of Natural Order.

Now the deeper you get into it the further you get away from the Gorean Philosophy and move further into a personal one but the frame work is in the individual integrity.

What is the basis for gender-specific dominance?

I fail to see any posts that are trolling, save my reply to your snide remark.

i think trolls are people that knowingly stir shit in order to get an anticipated reaction from various factions that have firm opinions about the subject at hand.....

i'm allowed to have an opinion, and stick to it, as are you. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.
Right now, my opinion is that[sm=sucks.jpg] amd again, i say [sm=dontfeedtrolls.gif]

YoungLust -> RE: Now... is it just me...? (6/26/2009 10:07:24 PM)

I intentionally made a contentious topic, yes....

But, I would like Goreans to validate their belief system. Perhaps I'm not as educated as I should be, but if there were a Scientology forum here, I would post something similar. I would either like to be enlightened or to open the eyes of some people... or at least get a few laughs.

I'd still like to hear the basis for gender-specific dominance and submission.

Hahahaha! Sorry, OP. I'm not a particular fan of the Gorean lifestyle, but I suspect that most Goreans would find that remark rather humorous.
