rkreilic -> Number of Meals (6/28/2009 12:29:15 AM)

Alright, I have a gf who only eats one meal a day...and now the pet that I'm interested in having and may be giving a collar of consideration to has told me he only eats one meal a day. Is this healthy? I mean, I'm worried about them. I get my gf's situation but my pet lives with family and is perfectly able to get ahold of food I'm sure.

Rayne58 -> RE: Number of Meals (6/28/2009 1:14:30 AM)

Short answer - no it's not healthy. It plays havoc with the metabolism and blood sugar levels. You are much better off eating 5-6 small healthy meals a day.

rkreilic -> RE: Number of Meals (6/28/2009 1:20:26 AM)

That's what I thought but no one ever listens to me about meals. *Rolls eyes* Maybe it's because I'm a switch that they don't take me seriously?

littlewonder -> RE: Number of Meals (6/28/2009 2:55:11 AM)

or it's the fact that you are young or you just come across as not assertive? I dunno...just a thought...anyway, it's not healthy. It's healthier to actually eat a few smaller type meals throughout the day instead of three large meals.

Good morning!
I usually only eat 1 full meal a day but graze in between. Daddy eats at certain times and very healthy stuff so when we first got together, he had me write down everything I ate for a week or two. To give him an idea of where things could be improved upon. Like more water, less soda, more veggies(yuck!). With his strict checking and asking me if I ate, what I had etc, I was able to modify most of it. If I look like I am skipping meals again or going back to old habits, he puts me back on writing it down again..so I really try to be good. What makes this all work though, is that he really asks, checks, and somehow KNOWS when have slipped up. ::smiles::  for example, every morning he messages me,this was this morning-

morning baby girl.. been out for a lil ride ..it was nice not traffic.Did you drink your water & eat??best have,,,,,, have a good day.hugsssss my lil one tight Daddy/Master

And he knows I will not lie to him. Hopefully, you can help your subs out by having them eat a bit more. Being sick and weak is no fun and it might get that way as they get older. I mean, body changes and things. Good luck!
Love,
Zechriel [sm=couple.gif]

Im sorta in the once a day catagory.  If Im not the cook, its once a day but not always.
My body hardly ever indicates its hungry, Im am very forgetful and will often think to myself that I should get something to eat....then it passes and I forget.

Poen has been very good at seeing I eat at the very least twice a day.

I know in my mind its not healthy, and the reason I dont eat isnt because Im obsessed with losing weight, its just the simple fact I just rarely get hungry enough to go searching.

lovingpet -> RE: Number of Meals (6/28/2009 10:50:12 AM)

Should?  5-6 small meals a day.  What do I actually do?  Sometime 1, other times 3, and on occassion 0.  I forget.  I also don't get hunger signals very often.  I have to just remember that I should be eating something.  If it weren't for the um's whining for food, I'd probably eat even less.  It's not good for me, but I'm working on it.

Thank you for all the insights. I can't really handle my gf's diet as she lives in another state and money is her biggest problem. And the people she's living with keep throwing all the food out. So yeah...but the pet, that I can handle as he lives in the same city as me. Hopefully I can show them that they need to eat differently. And since my gf's more dominant than I...yes, that is confusing the issue but I worry about everyone's health quite a bit.

LadyHexx -> RE: Number of Meals (6/28/2009 4:07:45 PM)

Well, I hope she is going to be alright in her current situation...I know I cant judge, because I often forget to eat, or dont feel hungry.

oceanwinds -> RE: Number of Meals (6/28/2009 4:44:06 PM)

I can forget to eat, so i drink a lot of smoothies, and make sure I have one big meal.

sirsholly -> RE: Number of Meals (6/30/2009 8:48:19 AM)

Is the question the number of meals, or the number of times you eat?

I eat all day long, as do alot of us, but only have one actual meal per day (if that).

brandi1379 -> RE: Number of Meals (6/30/2009 10:34:42 AM)

lunch is usually my big meal of the day, im not a breakfast person and i dont cook dinner much these days since the um's are away for the summer. but i do snack on veggies and whatnots inbetween meals

rkreilic -> RE: Number of Meals (6/30/2009 10:41:55 PM)

I was just checking on what was healthy for the sake of those in my life. Anyway, my pet and I discussed it and he says he has little snacks throughout the day but I will have him keep a journal of what he eats eventually.

switch2please -> RE: Number of Meals (7/2/2009 2:21:26 AM)

When I do remember, I still don't eat much. I love to cook and I'm in a situation again where I can indulge this pleasure, and having the space and time to make what I like does help. Some days I'm especially preoccupied so I set an alarm on my phone to remind me to snack, and I always have a glass of water or a cup of tea nearby. On days when I see my boy he makes sure I eat something, whether it's dinner or breakfast together, or even just a large glass of juice before I leave his apartment. He also nags me for not sleeping as much as I should, but he can't do anything about my insomnia...

WoodenPaddle -> RE: Number of Meals (7/3/2009 2:54:39 AM)

Nope, not healthy at all.
Best is to have about 4 (lighter) meals/day, spread out evenly.

I noticed a post stating just grazing throughout the day is good. That does hold some truth, but it wreaks havoc on your teeth, so one should make sure of paying extra attention to dental care.

MasterHermes -> RE: Number of Meals (8/4/2009 6:00:50 AM)

Does anybody really believe our ancestors were able to eat 5 meals a day twenty thousands years ago? And do you think our bodies were evolved in a way we were not feeding ourselves hundreds of thousands years? So where does this 5 meals a day come from? Its actually this century's invention. Since our foods started to become so unhealthy, eating one big meal was causing our glucose levels to move up really fast. Also body was having a difficult time dealing with all the toxins it gets from the industrialized food and storing some of them in the body along with the fat. That is when people came up with an idea of dividing meals into so many small portions like 5-6.

What most people do not realize is by eating 5-6 meals a day, no matter how small portions are, you are forcing your digestive system to work through out the day. Digesting food is a major job for the body. Once you start eating the whole metabolism starts working faster. Hearth beats faster in order to supply more blood to stomach, the intestines and liver work harder and so on. The body is not supposed to work that way all day long.

If you eat healthy, (meaning no sugar, no salt, no grain, no fast food, no canned food, no microwave ready food only whole vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and reasonable amount of fish/meat if you want to), then instead of trying to eat small amounts, even eating two normal meals a day will be enough for you. You also may be surprised noticing you are feeling lighter. Digestive system works best between 06-11 am (or from sun rise to noon, because originally human didnt hunt at nights) . Metabolism starts slowing down afternoon, but its slowest in the evening. Thats why breakfast is told to be the most important meal. Body gets most of the nutrition from the food it digest in the morning.

Of course if you wont be able to change your entire eating habit and lifestyle, then eating small portions makes sense, since less of an unhealthy food is better for you than eating a big portion at once.

Best Wishes
Hermes

Everyone is different and especially so with their overall health.

Generally the human body is basically an engine, calories and quality of food in and energy burnt off. For people in good health with no medical issues I would not call it wise but eating one meal a day is not dangerous.

Generally the trend to this recommendation of many small meals a day is come out of the desire to change poor eating habits that many people believe people fall into by over eating the hungrier they are. So in theory eating many small meals so you never pig out type thing. If that works for someone great but it is not a main thing to do to be healthy.

For years and years nutritionists and other people keep trying to figure out a magical system that if you do it will keep you thin and healthy. There is only one that has ever worked eat healthy, do not overeat and exercise. All of this number times a day or eat a lot of this or avoid that has more to do with the psychology of the human being and how we deal with hunger and food then our physiology.

So if eating one or two meals a day works for your body there is nothing wrong with that. But if you do this and often crash feeling weak or too tired you need to think about changing it up. My personal opinion though is the odds of one meal a day being the best for a person are rather small and most people would be better off fueling their bodies more then that.

in the days of the cavemen - it is safe to say they did not slouch around - and ate when they felt like it....they had to kill what they ate - and they had to stay healthy to survive...i bet they ate a lot when they first had food....

And eating small meals throughout the day - yes, it was probably "invented" in our century - due to the fact that people have changed their habits a lot. We sit still in our cars to and from our work - a lot work in offices - and sit still all day - still eating big meals - we have no way of digesting the way a hard working individual does...We have changed our living/working ways more than we have changed our eating habits.Interesting thing also is - fastfood is cheaper and easier to get a hold of than healthy food. People "on the run" chose what is convenient...not so much what is healthy.

Not eating - will certainly send signals to the body - the less you eat - the less hungry you will feel...on the other hand - less your mind/body work also...

i work from home - i forget to eat - so i have a bowl of cut veggies on my desk and a pack of crackers or something and a very large bottle of water....i see food - i eat...*L*...and i keep my metabolism going strong and my weight down..win-win...s...

Mishna -> RE: Number of Meals (8/22/2009 4:49:59 PM)

In my personal experience, if I only eat one or two meals each day, or if I forget entirely, I stop being hungry at all, and my metabolism shuts down completely. I've found for me that eating those 5-6 small meals each day help me lose weight and feel a heck of a lot healthier. In addition, I try to drink a lot of water, like 130-140 ounces each day. It's not always practical when I'm working, but I try to maintain it on the weekends, anyway.

I would say, if it's a concern, speak with a nutritionist who is qualified to analyze your personal metabolism and advise you on the best eating plan for you based on your personal needs. Everyone's body works a bit differently, and you will get as many different answers as there are people on the boards.

Rhodes85 -> RE: Number of Meals (8/22/2009 11:37:49 PM)

Well I eat once a day, if that (no particular reason, just don't have much of an appetite) and i've never had a problem with it. Hell I can go a week without eating and not even get hungry.

It really depends on your metabolism, age, size, health and activities. However if you're diabetic eating once a day is not a good idea.
