I've had cellulitis twice (not from waxing -- as a complication of neurodermatitis) -- I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy (I nearly lost my leg above the knee to it!). A good esthetician will explain the risks, including the risk of inflammation, infection, and ingrown hairs (which are also a risk with other hair-removal methods, including shaving). Especially for the bikini and perianal area, hair removal is a relatively risky experience, because of the immediate proximity of both mucous membrane (the inside of the labia and the area around the anus are not skin--they're actually mucous membrane) -and- increased bacterial activity. Additionally, this is an area that doesn't get a lot of fresh air, and has folds where bacteria and fungus may become trapped.

One thing that wasn't mentioned in the article is that it is recommended to shower rather than to tub-bathe or soak in a hot-tub or swimming pool within 48 hrs of having a waxing done. Bathtubs, hot-tubs and swimming pools tend to have a relatively high bacterial count, and swimming pools also contain high levels of chemicals which can increase irritation of freshly waxed skin, increasing the risk of subcutaneous infection.

Shaving, BTW, causes microscopic 'nicks' in the skin, and also removes the top layer of skin cells (by scraping rather than tearing), and has a similar level of risk to waxing. The only thing that makes shaving marginally safer is that it is often done in our own homes, where we are at least nominally immune to our own 'germ load'.

I seen a story similar to this one you have posted a few months back on a talk show. The lady was married, and maybe in her thirties or early forties, was going on vacation with hubby.Did the bikini wax and a few days later was also in the hospital, suffering from a staph infection. She lost both her legs and her fingers, She had no clue she was in such danger, and had no symptoms, no redness around the waxed area, other then just not feeling well. It was her hubby that made her go, after a few days of her just laying around, feeling like she had the flu bug. After I watched that show, I have not been back to wax anything, I will use razors and simple soap.

Yanno...if i might go off topic here. I was having one hell of a time with reoccurring UTI's/kidney infections, and i was told repeatedly that women should not bathe...rather you should shower. Pools and hot tubs are ok (surprise!) because they are generally chemically treated...although i would avoid them after a wax job.

Lockit -> RE: Beware of the Killer Bikini Wax! (6/30/2009 12:31:32 PM)

I haven't taken a bath in years.. yes, I know... but I do shower!  Give an ol broad a break here!  For me they were dangerous.  I can do a hot tub because of the chemicals, but must shower right after.  I moved into a place many years ago that only had a bathtub.  Within a short time I was hospital bound and having surgery to see if the infections were in my blader wall.  That is how serious it got for me.  I cleaned that tub every day since I had a family and it got lots of use.  Before I got in, I always cleaned it up.  So what the heck?

Later my dryer broke down in winter and I couldn't dry the clothes outside.  I decided to hang them on a broom handle over two chairs and put a fan on them.  OMG... hell... a sinus infection that was the worst I had ever had.  I later tried to steam iron something and bam... again.

I don't sit in water unless it is chemically treated; I don't breath it in through steam or any other source.  Water does not like me.

As for shaping up certain area's, I use a mustash trimmer and have never had any of the problems with shaving, waxing or nair.

Thanks so much for posting this! I was thinking of trying a wax at home. I think I will join the crowd and stick with my razor!

Yeah, that daily soak-bath, especially with bubbles, can seriously mess up the plumbing. It changes a woman's vaginal and mucous-membrane pH, and removes the natural lubricants that protect the mucous membranes, allowing unhealthy bacteria to build up -- and giving them a direct shove into the urethra and vagina, due to normal relaxation during bathing. And the water is often at the perfect temperature to encourage the growth of bacteria moving from the anal verge to the urethra.

Pools and hot-tubs are -better-, but they taught us in midwifery school that women who swim in chlorinated water on a daily basis have a higher incidence of yeast and bacterial vaginosis and UTI's, so I usually recommended that women who had frequent UTIs or yeast infections limit pool time to 2-3 times a week, tops.

No, so men can point out the golden middle road...

A piece of advice from someone who is too polite to spit during sex (unless it's got something to do with the sex itself, of course), and whose varied dermal adventures have included removing both pubic and facial hair completely with a set of fine electronics tweezers: cut it short, don't cut it off.

There's no spitting with short hair. And it's easier to maintain. Just as easy to clean. No damaged pores. Halleluja!

And, obviously, some sort of aftershave is still good. I favor Vademecum as a family tradition. Masochists may echo that preference. Ethanol in any form works. Glutaldehyde is probably better, provided the skin is unbroken. Rinsing properly with cold water afterwards will tend to close any pores or nicks well enough. Bathing is better beforehand, given the excellent growth conditions in most tubs. I have suitable germicidal lighting, so I could care less.

Besides, the new tub has armrests that double perfectly for gyno use, so bathing after is excellent... [:D]

Health,
al-Aswad.

Same here. Mine started as an injection site reaction (I take Avonex for MS). That thing spreads like wildfire. I, too, was told that I nearly lost my leg and spent one month with a PIC line pumping antibiotics into me.

Master shaving using a razor.

SavageFaerie -> RE: Beware of the Killer Bikini Wax! (7/3/2009 4:40:12 PM)

Locket Im with you, I also use a trimmer with a #1 trimming attachment.  I just dont do bare it all.  It keeps it very short, does not irriate or take off a layer of skin and hell takes no time to do.

BP said something about liking it bright and shiney...I told him when he totally shaves down there I would. LOL  Until then I would stay non itchy and ingrown hair free.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Beware of the Killer Bikini Wax! (7/11/2009 11:23:42 AM)

I would still get a bikini wax ok well for me it'd be a brazillion I want it all gone, at least just once to see if all the tales I heard told about how yummy sexplay was afterward was true* yes I have shaved and shaving sucked, and no just trimming it super close but not off isn't even close to being the same as bared for me*.

I would however becareful of where I got it and was their hygein practices as good as it should be Ie no double dipping the supplies, and I'd ask tons of questions and make sure they could put my mind to ease before getting on with the waxing.
