There were already two cats here when I came to live with my Mistress. She was feeding them a generic grocery store brand because she had been told all cat foods were pretty much the same. From previous pet experience I insisted on changing them to Iams brand. While both the cats were healthy to begin with, she has noticed they now have more energy, chase and play more, despite them both being seniors (ages 12 & 14). The most notable difference is that I clean the litter box less than half as often as there is still less smell. The cheap brands have all sorts of filler, much of which the cats can't digest so it just ends up in the litter box. This also means the cats are now eating significantly less so the food lasts longer. A 20# bag of Iams cost about $32 and last the two cats more than three months, that breaks down to about $5/month per cat. If you also consider using less cat litter the actual cost probably isn't any more than buying the cheap brands.

A couple of the most common pet food fillers are saw dust and ash. If the ingredients list "cellulous" that's probably saw dust and wood chips. Most cheap brands will just say "filler" or some vauge term. The ash is very hard on the urinary tract often resulting in UTIs, loss of bladder control and kidney failier.

I am all about Sojos for my canine and feline friends.

One thing to think about before asking your friendly vet for a recommendation, what do they sell? While my vet constantly praises the health of my animals, especially the condition of their teeth, and they both know what food I feed, they will always recommend the brand they sell. Not because it is the best, but because they want you to buy it from them. Coincidence? I think not.

Not a drop of coincidence, LaT.... It's about the all mighty dollar. However, at least the vet here will tell you his honest opinion about what you are feeding your cats (he only works with cats) and explain why he feels that way. He recommended the brand of food he sells ( I can't remember which one it is specifically but it's not Science Diet or Nutro) but he also agreed that what I was feeding Punky was just as good as what he sells. He really couldn't argue with it - not once he heard what I feed the monster-kittehs! I feed the cats better than some people feed themselves. I strongly believe that nutrition is so important for everyone, animals included.

[8|]  Ya, here the sign just says "For an easy, pampered home, go to Rain and Lumus, but especially Rain...... "

(Though I completely blame Lumus for this one. It's all HIS fault this time - He's the One who said that we would have a snake first before ever getting a 3rd cat! Does this means that the cats win?)  [:D]

If it looks and smells good to you, its acceptable for the cat too. If you wouldnt eat it, why would you expect your furry friend to? After all, we dont feed our children with absolute crap, just 'cause its cheap.

"Food Inc" - out now.

I know my dog loves Meow Mix and the cat is rather fond of Rachael Ray's Nutrish.....  I gave up trying to keep them separate. [&:]

Am just wondering about the different brands of cat food and what a cat will eat, what I want to know, is who tastes the stuff to decide whether soething is good, tasty, etc, or not ?

Excellent question(s).

1)  There are many (brands).

2)  A cat will eat only those cat foods that she's seen the label to, given her precise approval for....and she'll shit in your slippers if you fuck with her.  (Don't fuck with her).

3)  I taste this stuff.  (A lot of people have wondered...you were the first to ask....it's me...all me...no one else...I'm the guy).

4)  It tastes like shit.  Imagine eating cardboard....with a side of lint.  That's cat food.  I'm not all that sure why they eat this shit....but they do....it tastes like cardboard with a side of lint....you asked....I told.

Cardboard and lint.....that's the thing.

(I believe that covers all your questions).
