Kinky Sex Is on the Rise, Therapists Say
Sexual Fetishes, Sadomasochism, Bondage, Swinging, Even Bestiality: Is it the Internet?

Thought I would share

Eh, I'm inclined to see it as what was always there surfacing rather than some new widespread disorder brought on by 'teh intrawebs' . . . . A reflection of the increasing freedoms for people to be & express themselves . . . . . . & that would be part & parcel of my seeing what it is that we do as being an expression of innate biological & cultural paradigms & forces existing in the society at large. Our 'vanilla' lives are full of D/s & fetishistic stuff, we kinksters just take that stuff, make it explicit, & play with it for various effects.

Also:

Given that there's quite a library of books by, for, & about kinksters, it does surprise me that journalists keep referencing essentially vanilla, mainstream resources for these kinds of articles . . . Why do they write these articles & never quote 'SM 101' or something like that? (*winces* . .. . I know, I know, this ostensible 'news' article is really a book review for newly published product of big publishing concerns, & as such is, in my not-so-humble, barely more than advertising for said newly published titles.)

No, it's not. It just looks that way because there's so much online crap now.

The SF, LA, NYC, and London kinky scenes were far more active a decade ago.

Ditto here roughleather, seems i always come in on the ass end of things *rolls eyes*

Lostkitten3 -> RE: Kinky Sex Is on the Rise, Therapists Say (7/21/2009 7:19:06 PM)

I hink it is becoming more mainstream, less of a private club thing. Perhaps that is what the quote is referring to? People are experimenting more?

JonnieBoy -> RE: Kinky Sex Is on the Rise, Therapists Say (7/25/2009 12:58:33 AM)

Perhaps it is not on the rise and is merely being revealed now by "therapists" making a buck or two by "reporting" that which is already known?

I can say that it is definitely working its way into the social consciousness.  I work in a bookstore and I notice that quite a large percentage of the romance books are starting to have a 'kinky' slant to them.  And it's becoming more obvious in the titles as well.

And in current movies. It was totally in the Watchmen.

MarsBonfire -> RE: Kinky Sex Is on the Rise, Therapists Say (7/28/2009 8:06:18 PM)

Yeah, but Watchmen was written in the late 70's, and published in the early to mid '80's....

I think there ARE more people out there looking for safer alternatives to fluid-swapping sex. God knows, the support/party group I was a part of back in the mid 90's saw more than it's share of suburbanites who were showing up after a trip to the local tack shop. Many of them try it out, and realize that it's not for them. Many show up thinking that the pickin's is easier in a kinky atmosphere, and quickly leave when the realize they still can't get laid because they call themselves a "Master."   But yes, I'd say a good number of them find what they are looking for in BDSM. That's really why we had a mini explosion back when Madonna, and several big name fashion designers were ripping us off to sell records and harnesses as accessories... (Thank goodness those days are over!)

Falkenstein -> RE: Kinky Sex Is on the Rise, Therapists Say (8/26/2009 2:03:01 PM)

Amy,

thank you very much for this article. I also check the enbedded article
Love Hurts: Sadomasochism's Dangers
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=4285958&page=1

Then out of curiosity I started reading and counting the comments on both article. My count may not be accurate or I may have misinterpreted the comment, but I found that for the first article
7 out of 65 were negative considering us pervert, godless, or mentally sick, the usual stuff.
for the second 14 out of 84 were negative.

So roughtly 15% were condemning our practices. I had feared more would.

Here is a little florilege. My preffered is the last one:

I have a daughter whom is twenty years old and thinks that BDSM is the life style for her! She is currently planning to move out of our home in order to par take in this activity with a man that is 54 years old. This is sick!! Is there help out there for this situation? Does anyone know anyone who can share a real life experience along with the dangers of this life style? (Not people currently living the life style either) troubled parents in Michigan

When you particpate in abhorent behaviors, you can't surprised at what happens...if you shoot dope you can die from an overdose...if you engage in animalistic sex pratices you can end up dead...

i think they are well aware of what they are doing and should experiance the effects of what they do.

Disgusting. No wonder our country is in such a horrible shape. People who like such things like to see such things done to other people; when pain is pleasure to them.....it's evil, is what it is. ~shudder~

Kinky regards

Henry

Media needs something to stir up, therapist's want to classify for profits.

i believe people will think what they wish. most may be oblivious until the supposed deviant behavior lands on their doorstep. even though my daughter is aware of my lifestyle and is technically an adult, i'd be livid if she was involved with someone his age and off doing the same.

i am inclined to believe itg media attention and the internet that have made it appear as if "kink" is on the rise, the same with drug use after all in the 1800s you could find opium dens in just about every major city as well as privet sex clubs and brothals

littlewonder -> RE: Kinky Sex Is on the Rise, Therapists Say (8/26/2009 7:04:30 PM)

It's not on the rise. To be honest it's actually dying down. It's just become mainstream and "normalized".

subbisherri -> RE: Kinky Sex Is on the Rise, Therapists Say (8/28/2009 1:17:36 PM)

Mainstream awareness of kink certainly seems to be on the rise, but that doesn't necessarily correlate to an increase in actual activity. There are SO many TV shows that allude to SM and other kinks, and rarely in a good way. It's almost always a story about a criminal who gets off on the suffering of an unwilling victim. CSI did a great job with the "Lady Heather" recurring role, but otherwise it's usually seen as sordid and dark and evil.

Delusional -> RE: Kinky Sex Is on the Rise, Therapists Say (9/2/2009 1:21:30 PM)

thanks for starting this topic, and yeah, two steps forward one step backward...no thats not a fetish...its just how we evolve...nice to be out of the vanilla closet into the sunshine that is....that is....well i dont know what to call it...but some of us just cant go back to smelling moth balls...also not a fetish, just a metaphor

I would bet that it remains fairly steady, it seems more prevalent when it becomes acceptable to admit it, which might result in a brief uptick of people trying it, or just gravitating to their natural proclivities earlier than they might have otherwise - or just because they can - how many times have you run into Vanilla wives or husbands who've been concealing their desires for years but were never able to tell anyone until the internet?

It's essentially an increase in reporting, with articles like this creating a normative effect that possibly psychologically enables more people to indulge their curiosity.

Not that that's a bad thing...

Nikki323 -> RE: Kinky Sex Is on the Rise, Therapists Say (10/19/2009 12:02:11 PM)

I have been a psychotherapist for many years and I see truth in all of the comments. There is always money to be made in pain and therapists and the media .... wellllll???   They both have a history of exploitation. I hate Dr. Phil and Dr. Drew. They make me ashamed of my MA in Clinical Psychology.

But lol.. it does seem that bdsm activities are very much on the raise.

As a sexual sub I also see that BDSM is on the riase... mostly males; lots and lots of unstable males seem to be emerging right now. Females either as tops or bottoms are hard to find these days. Rapes and wife beatings, as well as, alcohol abuse are also way up (FBI reporting).

I think people are hurting and sex being a drug much like other drug- brings an altered state and stops the hurt for a short time. Fetish sex is just a stronger form of the drug "sex."

On my site - sage101.com I have a mental health page for individual looking for free and effective mental health assistance (not from me- I don't work with this population) but I alwasy try and push the unstable toward good mental health. I love the kink too much not to try now and again to clean up the trash and promote sane, safe, consentual.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Kinky Sex Is on the Rise, Therapists Say (10/22/2009 9:11:43 PM)

In the sense that easier communication and access to new ideas, groups, and others with similar interests is better facilitated via the internet, yes, I'm sure the internet has something to do with it.  Is that a bad thing?  Absolutely not, in most cases.
