OrionTheWolf -> RE: What's Been Stimulated? (7/2/2009 7:00:48 PM)

I found more information on the tax credit (this is not a tax cut) that is part of sthe stimulus package. $400 for single, $800 for married and it is spread out over the year. From what I see it is for two years? Anyone else have a link to some exact information on this. That is a huge bill to try and read the entire thing. I cannot see our politicians reading the entire document.

Yeah I have seen magicians work magic too, so it must be magic. Show me a link to the actual tax cut. Otherwise you have been given a euphoric feeling with a smile and a nod by a slight change to publication 505.

I suggest speaking with another tax/business consultant for confirmation.

All I said was that I was getting more money and it wasn't by changing my withholdings.

They should do what Bush did. Cut a check. $600 for single. $1200 per couple. Now that was a cut, not the smoke and mirrors seen here...

      Well, here is a flat-out raise in "pay" for one segment of America;  a 13.6% increase in food stamp payments!

    No banner headlines in the mainstream media, for some reason, but easy enough to find.

     The timing is interesting.  The funding is set to run out after 18 months, right in time to be an issue in the '10 mid-term election.  That doesn't seem like very good strategy.  Or maybe he and his staff have run the numbers, and figure that if every recipient of gov't assistance votes as a block, and the abortion/guns/deathpenalty issues keep splitting the rest, they'll be unstoppable.

from the creative sectors, some friends have told me they are purchasing items that they'd normally forgoe under current circumstances.  Both here in Oz and in the USA.

I see tons of headlines saying housing markets are showing signs of recovery.

In South America the Administration is siding with the open regimes of Cuba and Venezuela. I doubt many (any?) realize that the army's action was a result of the Honduras Supreme Court ruling that Zelaya's attempt to change the Constitution of Honduras to keep himself in power was illegal; akin to a standing President of the US deciding to void the Constitutional law of serving for more than 2 terms. HONDURAS Shouldn't a country of laws be on the side of those attempting to enforce their countries laws?

Let's see here, Actually every free nation has taken this position, including the UN, The formed governing group of South, Central and North America groups (I can't remember it's name), Japan, The European Union, even China has spoken out against the take over,

He was only was seeking a conference on if the constitution could be changed, he was not calling for a vote or changing it, the military then removed him from office.  Seem every free governing power has the same position our President took, seems you and Rush are the only ones who believe that if a military does not like what you are discussing in your government then they can just kick you out

Unemployment seems to have been stimulated, does that count?

pahunkboy -> RE: What's Been Stimulated? (7/3/2009 5:44:48 AM)

In  a way it is surprising that anyone pays taxes.

The economy will be relatively good for the next year.   Then 3 years from now- things will be 1940s depression level.

Calif will not be a good place to be- particularly LA.

For as much as we blame the other guy- there is plenty of blame to go around... in that we all let this happen.

Picture a cat kocking a book off a shelf and that knocks over a fish tank.   We are the fish.  Some of us blame the cat-- others blame the book- and still others blame the shelf.    All the while- no appropriate preparation or remedy.

Bush did not do this.
Obama did not do this.

JP Morgan, Goldman Sacks,

and we the lone individual is doing this to us.

Be that as it may- this is no time to assess blame.   The collapse is en progress.    That is the reality.

Mercnbeth -> RE: What's Been Stimulated? (7/3/2009 6:41:14 AM)

As expected the responses are not pointing to anything stimulated positively by this administration. Of course there is the usual partisan perspective and the idea of waiting another generation for results.

Truth be told, I've been stimulated to accelerate my duel citizenship process with Italy. I am also considering, and about 70% sure, getting out of California now and establishing my residence in Florida.

Surprised that more didn't pick up about the stimulation of 'carpet baggers'. It was touched on by the few who identified lower housing costs. However many of the hedge fund managers have moved their cash rich customers over to the discounted housing market. Buying them from the foreclosed upon people and renting them back to them. Sure a few individuals are also taking advantage of the situation but with the new restrictive approval guidelines in place you better have a big chunk of change for a DP and never been 30 days late on your credit card.

Best is seeing that there is no disagreement with the issues raised, only trying to rationalize that this Administration is either impotent to do anything about them. Not really the point, but it's interesting to see agreement in the poor condition of the country, if not agreement in the cause.

The only smoke and mirrors was the way it was handled, I guess because the Bush administration and Congress felt that people would more tangibly see what they were getting.

I thought it was pretty stupid to have to send in a check for my taxes and then two weeks later get a check back from the government instead of just letting me deduct that amount from my payment.

Talk about wasted time, energy, and manpower.

Termyn8or -> RE: What's Been Stimulated? (7/3/2009 9:29:02 AM)

I have refrained from this thread thusfar because I could think of nothing of any substance. I had assumed that's what you were asking for, either to support your point or get some alternative input, the reason matters not. However there are some areas..........

These mainly have to do with pet or pork type projects, as well as local projects that were already supposed to be funded. However just about every every state, city, town, whatever seemed to have a hand out for some of the boodle. Some of this crap is "beautification" or something like that, largely nonproductive. How many of these now extra-funded projects will now include planting flowers or commissioning stupid statues for downtown areas ? For the worst of worst examples, look at Cleveland Ohio. Our "FREE" stamp and that stupid thing that looks like it was once monkey bars in a playground but got hit by a truck. We should have to vote locally on shit like this, and if it passes then fund it locally. Already funded road construction will probably include bike trails, that one could be up for debate, it could do some good, but still nothing substantial. Nothing I am hearing does anything significant for the economy per se, and will simply be a band aid.

Let's say the city gets $4M. Well their attitude is that it is a drop in the bucket. To form a metaphor here - at no extra charge - these people have apparently never put a bucket out in the rain and seen it filled by drops. (raindrops) So $4M doesn't matter, after all a thousand million is only a billion and we are printing trillions. So what's the fuss ?

Well you and I haven't really had to cut back, but cutting back on a personal level could include less PPV movies every month. Oh, it's only ten bucks for the movie so it doesn't matter right ? However somehow people forget that there are usually 30 days in a month. OK, I don't care about $300 a month because I make enough.

But wait, we are not making ANYTHING, we are borrowing all that money, so how can it make any sense ? When you see a welfare recipient buying three or more lottery tickets every day, what goes through your mind ? You see them, they use their food card to get the gang a bunch of junkfood and then proceed over to the lottery window and pull out a fifty, and get no change.

Well in a way this country is on welfare, as in borrowing money.

Maybe what we need is a food stamp type program for the government, in other words, someone else allocates some of the money.

Incidentally I must mention that the need for a food stamp (or card) program is totally reprehensible to me. These people would watch their own starve for lottery tickets, cellphones they never use for anything good, cable TV, gas for joyrides, not to mention drugs and alcohol. If this is what we have become, is it possible that the government really DOES represent us ?

[Sorry to sem-irant on your thread, but at least i didn't get partisan]

But back to the pork, all the road projects are temporary. Usually they offer about 2-4 years employment, to not very many people as much as they may pad the payroll with their ilk. When the project is over, what then ?

T

I'm not sure what you are defining as a tax cut.  If you mean a rate reduction then no.

If you mean will your taxes be cut by that amount then yes, they will be directly lowered by the applicable amount regardless of which option is chosen.

Understanding the New Economic Stimulus Law: How Does It Impact You?

"Making Work Pay" Credit

ARRA provides for an individual tax credit in the amount of 6.2% of earned income,
not to exceed $400 for single returns and $800 for joint returns in 2009 and 2010.

This credit phases out at adjusted gross income (AGI) in excess of $75,000
($150,000 for married couples filing jointly).

Eligible taxpayers can claim the credit as a reduction in the amount of income tax that is withheld from a paycheck, or through a credit on a tax return.

awmslave -> RE: What's Been Stimulated? (7/3/2009 11:05:07 AM)

Looking from the distance, the stimulus bill is typical Democrat led US Congress production: the badly crafted legislation  rushed through the process. There is no doubt the other bills will be the same: "Slap and Trade", health care, immigration ... etc.... Who will clean the mess afterward?
