Well again, no one that I know of specifically targeted Bristol for criticism, but how would you report the story and leave her out of it?

Should the whole thing have been ignored?

We would get to look at Bristol's bulging belly and pretend she was just putting on weight while Mom ran around the country getting applause from the Christian right for promoting abstinence?

Well here's a thought....Mom when she gets a call from the McCain campaign, being fully aware of Bristols "condition" ,recognising the shit storm of negative press this would engender given her own stated views on the subject......says thanks but no thanks.
Of course this would mean that the "family-values" Gov. from Alaska might just have to sacrifice some of her ambitions for the well being of her......family.
But of course Sarah does no such thing....this poster child for narcissism instead decides to pull the whole family front and center into a National Campaign....and than has the chutzpah to bitch about the press coverage. And her conservative audience eats it up....are you fucking people kidding me!!!!There is only one person responsible for the amount of scrutiny this family is receiving and she will soon be the former Gov. of Alaska....coming to a city near you soon ,ladling out large doses of hypocrisy to the faithful,...in return for large amounts of cash of course

yes. its all mom's doing. why do the kids have to suffer because mom hasnt a clue about how to be a.. gasp.. mom? many of the articles made alot of assumptions about why bristol became pregnant, how mom's agenda made it impossible for bristol to talk to mom about brith control... ect ect ect. none of this is fact or in evidence... no one knows.

all i am saying is... Palin is an idiot, in my opinion. i wouldnt allow her to run a shelter for spiders (and, god, how i hate spiders!) let alone want her to run a state or the country.

there is enough evidence to support how unfit she is to govern anything. there is no need to drag the kids through this. mom has given the country enough fuel without ever having to use them.

i have to agree with rulemylife on that, Lotus. palin brought all that mockery of her family on herself. politics is a freaky, frazzled world. its a huge difference going from governor of alaska to VP. i cant even see her as governor of Cali or NY. she tried to make herself into the poster girl for the GOP. instead she opened herself up, often needlessly, to criticism.

Okies TH, if we're going to hold the democratic party responsible for what those who say they belong to it mean, then we have to do the same with the GOP.

But isn't that pretty much the standard operating procedure, Phil???  Grab the whackos, and apply the label to the whole conservative spectrum?

....and that's equally misleading as labeling the democratic movement by the actions and words of other whackos.
i'm glad you used the phrase 'conservative spectrum' though. It's important to recognise that both sides of the US political debate are not homogenous. Democrats do not agree on everything, there are strands of thought there...some quite antagonistic to each other. The same is true of the Republicans. Palin is a divisive figure there as well. Despite my little joke earlier in the thread, Palin doesn't build bridges....she burns them. Consequently, it is very hard even for moderately inclined people to ignore her. i've been trying to think of a figure on the left with her ability to make her side as pissed off. Sadly i don't know US politics well enough. However i am slightly reminded of George Galloway.

Here's the thing. Palin advocates mandating abstinence only sex ed in public schools. That means no information on safe sex or birth control. Now most people know that teenagers will have sex and that teaching them about safe sex and birth control options will reduce teen pregnancies and STI's (we have a fair amount of science that indicates that is the case). The group that believes in abstinence only claims it will be more effective in preventing teen pregnancy and STI spread (the science debunking this belief is widely available). So when an advocate of abstinence only comes onto the national stage and her own teen daughter is pregnant it is appropriate to cover that fact as evidence that abstinence only is a hypocritical position.

That was entirely predictable and unavoidable. Any disconfort caused to the young lady is entirely her mother's fault. She could have refused the nomination or admitted that her family experience had caused her to change her position on the subject and the story would have gone away except for the tabloid media latching onto the father to be's family dramas.

and i can find no fault with your thinking.

my only problem is making the "family" a source of redicule because of the mother's blunders. i agree, the pregnancy, in that light, is indeed news. but comments earlier.. aka.. the trailer park trash... in my opinion, has no business in a political debate. palin has given us enough without us stooping to her level and using the family as one more punch line.

Absolutely agree that all the under-18s are off-limits.

Not when Mom herself puts them in play to further her narcissistic agenda.

and people who keep insisting they are not off limits will continue to come across as cruel and heartless towards children and never be taken seriously... as you are not now.

Actually Bristol Palin is not under 18---she turned 18 just before the November election, and thus is no longer a minor.

It's not the media who dragged Palin's family into this. Palin dragged them into it herself. When a candidate decides to run for public office, they bring their family onto the stage with them. For better or worse, that's just the way it works. When Palin presents herself as a leader and an authority on social policies, and claims that she knows how to solve the problems of teen pregnancies and teen drug abuse, the fact that her son is a drug addict and her daughter is an unwed teen mother become relevant. It proves that the policies she is proposing for the country as a whole do not even work in her own family. She's saying, "do things my way, and your problems will be solved", and the pregnant daughter and junkie son are the proof that she is wrong. If she wasn't claiming to be an expert on how other people ought to raise their kids, the way she raises her kids would be nobody else's business. But she does claim to be an authority, so the way she raises her kids - and the way they turn out - are relevant to her argument.

Tazzy it was Palin and the McCain campaign that foisted the children on America...it was her handlers who deemed her a "hockey mom"...who gave us that whole tarmac scene in which John McCain went down the line hugging all the members of this dysfunctional family.....and taking extra time with Bristol and her hockey player.
If one chooses to sell themselves as the defender of real American family values and morality....one better make sure all of one's ducks are in a row.
Bitching about the scrutiny after the fact is just more hypocrisy from Mrs.Palin.

again, im not arguing that... does it make it right? acceptable to do so? acceptable to use them when there is so much more we could use as meat against her fitness to run our country?

is it ok that, since she made a mockery out of her own family, that we follow her lead?

Well, I don't think it's so much a question of "stooping to her level" - but if someone's going to stick their nose in my face and tell me how to raise my kids, and one of her kids is a junkie and the other's an unwed teenage mother, I think it's logical and completely justified for me to point out that she's got no business preaching to me about how to raise a family.

If it's the scrutiny she's fed up with, she's going about it ass backwards: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/akmuckraker/huffington-post-blogger-s_b_225817.html

So that's the basis for your claims? Some isolated columnist nobody has ever heard of and a single 'cartoon?' How precisely is that the fault of the Democratic party or Barack Obama, which was what you claimed?

You do love moving the goalposts, don't you Ken?  And putting words in, that were never there, too.  I said it would reflect on the Democrats, and noted to another poster that if I used the same logic he had in another thread, then the blame would go upon Pres. Obama.  I didn't say that because I feel the blame goes to Obama, but to point out the problem with his putting the blame on McCain.

So you answered my question in response to someone else?

The last thing Panda asked is this:
quote:

What on earth are you talking about? I have no clue what you're trying to say, and I see no similarity whatsoever. Because I hold John McCain responsible for what Sarah Palin said while campaigning on behalf of McCain, Barak Obama should be held responsible for what David Letterman says on his TV show? I have absolutely no idea what comparison you're trying to make here, Rich, let alone what point you're trying to make with that comparison.

Which was in response to your previous claims that the Democratic party had called Palin's daughters sluts and her son a tard. So I'm still asking got any proof for your claims?
