I don't know ANYthing about it other than it appears to be similar to Wicca (or is it Wiccan?) in that there are very ritualistic activities involving some fairly precise gathering of material things in addition to specific times for activities. (vague I know but it is the best way I could describe my thoughts)

For me, that is more work than necessary to engage my spiritual nature. I am not into memorizing, ritualizing, or making specific items or times, necessary to achieving a goal. Which is why I immediately quit investigating the wicca thing. (not to mention I got heebied out by some of the weird people involved)

Not keen the derogatory word "Pagan" and the devastation of our historic, cultural and archaeological heritage carried out under it's use so I will pass on this.

Sounds like the victim was scammed ... I read she paid a fair sum ... for "treatment" ... that smells crooked rather than religious intervention.

The Tarot are one of the preferred divination tools in Voodoun. Some others are mirror scrying, 'throwing the bones' (which is a lot like a Voodoun version of I Ching or rune-stones), and the reading of animal entrails.

Thanks for that, water gazing = scrying,as does use of the crystal ball (ok mostly glass theses days but there IS a way to tell ... If you can afford it its unlikely to be real)
Bones and entrails used for divination way back by the celts ... along with pool gazing (water sources being magical lifegiving places). Possibly where the "wishing well" developed from (worth a look into)

There is belief these days that what the ignorant Christian monks have depicted in terms of the entrails being examined may actually represent veterinary knowlege that was (obviously) not understood by them.

Personally I'd prefer selected parts of the entrails carefully prepared over a warming fire and bang the bones to make music (no... not with ash on my face and wearing a top hat) (mind you if I gave it the works I would be surrounded by half naked/naked girlie dancers all thinking I am real holy and doing lots of things MY WAY so as not to be out of favour)

I'm gonna try and persuade GT to do lots of "things" to an effigy of me to test this doll thing and will report back (if I have any energy left )

Absolutely NOT..wiccan is relatively new..a mix of earth based religions with "guidance" from several organizers....
and is from the 50's and 60's.

Voudoun is CENTURIES old..with a pantheon eons old

I think Wicca/Wiccan is more likely to include some of the more ancient beliefs but that those who don't study them do not see how this is often a very individual set of beliefs of varying components.
Modern "commercial" wicca can be junk, as can any belief system if it gets polluted by moneygrabbers.

I'm backing GQ on the centuries old bit ... and going a step further, I think we have a possibility that these beliefs go back "BC".

The Romans also used animal entrails for predictions.

..my own entrails are also quite good at predicting. When they growl and grumble they're predicting that soon I'll eat something :)

I guess being being recognised as a religion by the United Nations, the USA or whatever country your in would add a certain air of credibility to a religion. I've just seen the "It's a legitamite X" post with no explanation or justification whatsoever on a number of topics. It always kind of bothers me, first of all  it's just an assertion with nothing to back it up and second what does it's being legitimate prove or even mean.

P.S. Sorry everybody for the huge font, I don't know where that came from......oh and the terrible spelling. Hmm, might have had something to do with the beer I had at dinner.

I am not sure why you are rolling on the floor laughing unless it is your beer,,,if is is becuz you think the UN credibility thing is BS..
I don't care iether..I was simply answering your question

The UN might actaully not be that legit anymore itself
acoording to many ...
and I agree  to say something is legit...a fact..or whatever..
WE NEED TO ASK for a back up...research..proof or it is someone's assumption/ opinion and not neccesarily fact

Further to that I might add...I study spiritual paths and feel
that  organized religions..while each having SOME information..
none have it all ..know it all or are THE ONE

to me it is about  TAKE WHAT YOU WANT AND LEAVE THE REST...and the higher power of my understanding sees my good intent in my studies so will not smite me wiht a lightening bolt on the head or up the ass..

pass me a beer bro

Maybe it is important here to discuss what is a religion? Especially considering that for those of us in the west who still say we have one, most consider it a Sundays only activity, with God conveniently imprisoned in a building, or in the back of our minds, until we want Him. Religion, for very good historical and social reasons, is hived off from all else and considered a personal matter that should have no bearing on community, civic or national life or culture.

Religions like Voodoo and its associated forms, as well as ancient European (indeed world wide) religions which share its characteristics are not Sundays only activities. Neither are they compartmentalised out of everyday life but rather inform everyday life in every sphere. Regardless of our western ideas, this is the true nature of a religion, permeating and structuring and in turn being evolved by its host culture.

As for the legitimacy question, a religion can be considered legitimate if it provides an adequate (not necessarily accurate) and internally coherent worldview for its adherents to function healthily as individuals and as a society, measured by its enabling of survival and prosperity. Again here we must abandon western ideas of the importance of the person and his personal rights however, for the presence or promotion of such ideas is not a valid measure in this context. Yes, this allows for even the whackiest ideas to be formed into a religion, as long as the tests are passed - but then this is the case subjectively in any case, whether one is dealing with ancient religions, Abrahamic faiths, eastern revelations or modern concoctions. This also means that no religion is better or worse than any other, except by reference to the ability to pass the tests mentioned - no need to hate or kill someone but perhaps a mechanism for adopting his ideas.

s'up to you - it was written in the 19th century and is one of the ground breakers in terms of showing things as they are to a very religious society at the time. By showing the commonality of themes in all religion from ancient to "modern", it allows and enables one to backtrack from the modern mindset to the ancient, which is what is necessary if you truly wish to understand the ancient in a more than factual way.
