You're damn right, I'm screaming--My 19 YO UM goes with a family of friends of Mine to a waterpark, they had a glorious time, she relaxed, had a blast---72 hours later, she has legionnaires disease from the bacteria in the water--the family is ill, not as ill as she is---but WTF?? Chlorine doesn't kill the batceria, the bacteria goes from ecoli to legionnalis--WTF??? You send your kids/family to have some fun, to escape the issues of the world, the war, school etc and they come home and get sick???

The bacteria is all becoming antibiotic resistant. From years of over prescribing antibiotics for any little sniffle. Not just the doctors are at fault either. Patients go in sick, not wanting to hear that what they have wont be cured by an antibiotic, just rest and lots of fluids. Demanding to be given something, anything to help them, doctors would give out antibiotics on the off chance that what the patient has will turn into a bacterial infection needing to be treated accordingly. We have no one to blame but ourselves for this.

And let's not forget the antibacterial soaps that you find all over the place. It's hard to find soap - and many other products - that aren't "antibacterial".

see, and people wonder why as a kid, I ate raw bacon, or played with duck poop, or hugged hobo's........ it was to toughen my immune system up for this kind of shit...

Indeed, that's the one thing I'm grateful my mom did, was not fill me with antibiotics when I was young. My immune system grew naturally, to the point where I've gotten sick once in four years. And considering all my jobs involve interacting with hundreds of people a day, handling cash, that's pretty damn good.

SavageFaerie -> RE: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH BACTERIA?? (7/7/2009 1:04:52 PM)

So many Doctors are antibiobitic happy for a quick fix....Unless one can tell me with absolutely certainty its necessary and why, I flat refuse them, I have a pretty good immune systems and there has been little that that in itself has taken care of whatever is going on.

I take no precautions like antibactrical soap, stop eating things that are what the govt call questionsable, And like I like to say...I ate dirt as a kid.

I read an article or say something on tv, cant remember which, which said that those that grew up in the 50 and 60 are less likely to get infections, because back then it was more or less waiting an illness out instead of rushing to the dr demanding an antibiotic.

While I did get pneumonia not long ago, this was the first thing that has required me to take an antibiobic in 4 years at least.  For that matter I rarely catch colds, flus and bugs.

I think the way I was raised not getting alot of antibiotics and haveing a good immune systems keeps my health up even as I grow older.

Mind you I do have a couple of medical problems and of course Im crazy...but nothing is due to infections.

Also, who knows who was responsible for chlorinating the pool....it might not have had high enough levels of chlorine to kill the bacteria.

I believe Legionella cases are reportable to the Health Department (the lab that did the testing has to report the result to them) and they should be doing an  investigation. Wouldn't hurt to call them and let them know your daughter caught it from that pool.

CatdeMedici -> RE: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH BACTERIA?? (7/7/2009 3:10:22 PM)

Thanks wc, I called them and the pool.

windchymes -> RE: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH BACTERIA?? (7/7/2009 3:17:43 PM)

You're welcome.....hope your daughter is better soon! :)

thornhappy -> RE: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH BACTERIA?? (7/7/2009 7:32:26 PM)

Legionella is a really hardy, robust bacterium that's famous for living in water sprinklers in produce sections, cooling system towers, and ventilation systems.  It's so unusual in its food preferences that it took a hell of a long time to grow in culture.  It's not one of the ones that've increased by antibiotic overuse.

When I first saw the thread, I figured you were going to mention MRSA.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH BACTERIA?? (7/7/2009 9:03:31 PM)

I haven't swam in a pool in probably 10 years.  If I want to go swimming, I go to our local swimming holes.  The chlorine irritates my eyes, and I just don't want to swim in a small, standing pool of water that hundreds of people have been pissing in and swimming around in with open sores or God knows what.  In a natural body of water, at least it's dispersed.

Yeah, people do take antibiotics or any medicine for that matter for anything.  I won't even take aspirin unless I have a headache that renders me damn near incapacitated.  But I think the issue with water parks and public pools is a little beyond that.  First of all, it's not just the water.  You usually are walking around barefoot or in open shoes in puddles that have been standing unfiltered all day long.  You usually have to use the restroom while you're there, and they are always damp and disgusting.  You may even take a shower later in a locker room that hundreds of people have passed through.  You may have picked up a gym bag off the ground that was contaminated by the damp conditions and later touched your mouth or even ate lunch.  So I wouldn't pass this off on antibiotics.  Public pools and waterparks are extremely unsanitary no matter how much they filter and chlorinate.

I still do.

I'm brand-loyal. When I find something that works, I stick with it.
