Dear Aimtoplease101, Ladies and Gentlemen;

There have been means of 'flagging' yourself.

In the old days, men wore yellow neckties to say they were Gay.
In the pre 1970's lifestyle, women wore ankle bracelets on left or right ankle to denote their role.  Most women still wore skirts in the 1950's so the anklet bracelet, mostly a chain was worn.  Bracelets were also a key element when most went out of style.

Keys, sashes and other tagging means are still discreet and often regionally recognized.  Jewelry has often played a major role in identifying the lifestyle from the common man/woman.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

What about the BDSM symbol that you can get for jewlery. the triple ying yang thingy??

Lady Hugs, I have a blonde question.   Which ankle is which for the anklet?  I have matching chain anklet and braclet, so curious.

thank you

You've seen the shirts that say, "I'm with Stupid" - well, male subs could wear "I'm with Mistress" ... of course, the Domme could still wear the "I'm with Stupid" shirt - ROFL

Apparently this is an old thread that someone brought up but I'd like to point out that the triskele that BDSM uses is different from the sects of buddhism and if they were so smart they'd realise it was different. A form of martial artists also use the triskele so do United States Department of Transportation.

I'm really suprised so many people posted here not knowing their was an emblem.

http://members.aol.com/quagmyr/emblem.htm

This has exactly what the BDSM is why some reprisentations are wrong and why it is NOT the same as the buddhist symbol etc. and it's not a ying yang it's a triskele. I haven't been involved in BDSm that long but I knew about this so I guess that's why it's supprising to me to see others who've been in it longer know nothing of it.

In fact my most recent vector art project was a BDSM Emblem, so if anyone wants an infinitely scalable version just poke me lol. I really think the Emblem is the only way to tell from one glance if someone is into BDSM clothing and other things that go in and out of fashion. It's kind of like thinking someone's gay because they have a rainbow jacket. I doubt anyone is going to wear a BDSM emblem unless they're into BDSM.

I don't know it's my opinion that things like these should be common knowledge. I found the information when doing simple internet research on BDSM and it's background. I think rather than trying to come up with new symbols etc. we should try and educate people on what the current emblem is EXACTLY what it is so we don't have other triskele users flaming us.

The problem again I have with jewelry is confusion, I wear anklets all the time as do many tourists to my island, trying to find a Dom or sub through trends generally taken by the mass populace seems wholly ineffective to me.

(P.S. I am not harping on people who don't/didn't know about it. I just feel it's up there with knowing what a safe word is or the difference between hard and soft limits. My own opinion not necessarily yours.)

I am new to using the message boards but found this topic more that a bit interesting. For years I have carried a 14 inch eight tail as my key chain. More times than I can count it has been the topic of conversation, from grocery stores to swap meets, nearly anywhere that is public. I have been asked by gay, straight and those in between why this hangs out of my pocket. I want people to see and ask so that I can let them know what and who I am.

I have just got a collar - it's a sterling silver snake chain that sits at the base of my throat. Fairly unobtrusive, but others in the lifestyle might recognise it for what it is.

We also have a pair of black fuzzy handcuffs hanging from the rearview mirror in our car. Master wanted fluffy dice but we compromised

Now that's more of a practical response. The Triskele looks a bit like a swastika, and is easily confused with other representations. Additionally, by itself it does not indicate domme or sub orientation.

The "flag"/ bandana system is impractical. How many non-rednecks, non-gang members, can wear a bandana in an unobtrusive manner as part of their normal clothing?

I'm not sure that a horseshoe nail is really an appropriate symbol, or in any way theme-related, but it's creative.
ATP

Ahem..... NOT a redneck gang member. But I do wear bandanas often. Lots of hippies do it. In fact... so do plenty of Amish girls in Ramspringa.

*little delicate smirk*

Dear akisha, Ladies and Gentlemen;

Right for slave.  Left was usually not worn.

But, remember this is old 'fashion/fad' scene information.   Being a young lass--you do what is right for you.

Thank you Lady Hugs

I've always worn the anklet on the left as well as the braclet lol. I'm one of those backward people that wear their watch on their right and and are right handed.

I wasn't worried about having it on the wrong side, I just wanted to see if I had made a coincidental mistake and managed to get it on the correct side  low and behold i did *grins*

I've never been good at following what was "right or in" anyway *S*

thank you again for answering my question, I really appreciate it.

What do you all think of encouraging everyone in the BDSM community to shave off their eyebrows?

This would only cause a dictionary definition war, about what exactly constitutes eyebrows.

Ron

furthermore, this would not sit well with male slaves who lick their eyebrows as a method of interesting Dominas.

Not only that but I would prefer to not look like Whoopi Goldberg, again something like this I think generally wouldn;t work because people like neo-natzi's do it and yeah.

being one who loved "The Story of "O"", i loved the idea of a simple "O" ring on the finger. not blatant or over exposed like , just small, simple piece of jewelery.

but true, it would be hard to internationalise such a thing imo

Hello badkttyamy but I think you missed the point. I've long known about the BDSM emblem project and have seen those emblems. There are two problems with those emblems: 1) The BDSM symbol, whatever one wishes to call it, is generic and doesn't have any indication of role -- it just says "I'm a member of this community." 2) I have yet to find a version of the BDSM emblem that didn't seem a bit gothic to me. I've never felt comfortable with the idea of wearing it publicly.

Just because someone proposes something new, it's a bit naive to assume they don't know about the old.

I don't see how the Embem looks gothic at all but of course you're entitled to your opinion. However my post reffered to those who stated they did not know of ANY public BDSM symbol. And in fact the original poster stated nothing about a symbol that differentiated between Dom/me and sub etc they just stated they thought there should be a public symbol showing one had an interest in BDSM.

I also stated WHY I thought the other methods would be eneffective. Bandanas can get people into troube with gangs which is why I am not doing the whole flagging thing, that will get you shot in Savannah in some areas. Anklets are worn by everyone and their cousin's uncle where I'm from, so wearing one on your left or right ankle is not going to give you any indecation of someone who's into BDSM. Rather someone who likes to go to the beach or surf shops.

While D/s is a big part of BDSM there are other sects and what about switches? I think a general symbol is what the topic was about which is why I've been shooting whicever ideas I think wouldn't be reasonable. If we wanted really specific symbols I think it would just get too confusing. we'd need ones that said if you were sadist, mascohist, sub, Dom/me, the list goes on.

I think the emblem works as a general hey maybe you should come and get to know what I'm into versus trying to tell people everything about you by what you wear. Again I can understand that some people may want to find a different way to say hey I'm into BDSM just like I'm sure some gay people don't like the rainbow flag.

Have you ever thought that meeting people with similar interests in the bdsm lifestyle would be a lot easier if there was some discrete symbol that dommes and subs could wear in public? Like a blue bracelet, or a red toe ring, or a black tie. Something that was not so unusual as to draw attention from the uninitiated, but sufficiently unique/ rare to serve as an identifying sign to those who know what to look for?

ATP

I once went to the Hyatt in Cedar Rapids with a big bling around my neck (37 carats) that said "I'm a SUB DAMMIT!!!"

Got 3 framing jobs that day.

A slave ring is made and sold in my area. A simple gold band with a swivel loop soldered to the top of the ring.

M'William, that's the one i like, wouldn't mind one of those.

on the topic of emblems, slave bracelets worked for centries in the egyptian culture and many other cultures, dont see why they cant work now, or any other emblem.
