Is there a way to turn off email notifications when I get a new CM message?

Yes.

1. Go to the profile side of the site
2. Click the Read Mail button on the left-hand column
3. Click the Mail Control button on the top right-hand side
4. Uncheck "Send Notification emails for new message"
5. Click the Save Changes button.
