I am an adult, who was a child with a sensory processing disorder.
They did not have a name for it then.

As an adult, some things are still frustrating because they do not seem as easy for me as they do for other people.
As a child the way my body did (or didn't) do things always made me feel stupid.

I have a friend who's youngest daughter is very fussy about her clothes and she refuses to wear them if they feel too bumpy.

This is so frustrating. Where do you draw the line from "sensitive" to Sensory Integration Disorder? I have always been sensitive to fabrics. I will not wear wool (even a coat) and do not wear sweaters of any fabric...things like that. And i hate socks with a passion!!

But with some, the LO and Angelika and Celestes daughter, it is more extreme. It is so frustrating to understand.

It is just matters of degree: how much disruption does it cause?

It is uncomfortable for you but not unmanageably so.

i see what you are saying, but the LO has the diagnosis even though the issue (eating) is gone, and thus far no other signs are noted.

Others are sensitive throughout their entire lives yet are not considered to have SID.

I guess what i am saying is it is a very misunderstood disorder. I have read everything i could about it. It seems to be strongly related to Autism, Apergers and ADD/ADHD, yet no one really knows for sure.

I have never heard of SID or I don't remember. I could never wear certain things and all my clothing must be soft and I am talking soft! Little tiny seams... jeans are out. If the weave of cotton or anything say a tee shirt is too big... I can get sores from it rubbing against my skin. Just to touch wool gives me the heebejeebies. Anything that gets older or has those lil bumpy fabric knots... will rub me raw. I always thought it was the fibro doing this.

oh Lockit, how i can relate...

and sheets seem to be one of the worst offenders to me.  mama called me "princess and the pea" so often its a running gag between us.  NO wrinkles in the bottom sheets, the top sheet has to be tucked in just so or my feet are unhappy...i'm happier since i can sleep nekkid because i dont have nightwear getting tangled around me any longer.

and right now i'm being bitchy cause my skin is so sensitive that it ITCHES but if i touch it it HURTS.  *sighs* 

and my daughter is the same way with clothing, she has stuff she just wont even touch because the texture is "wrong" to her.

Socks were always the worst. I gave up and she wore tube socks inside out for years so there were no threads bothering her toes. Actually she's still real picky about socks and wears these thin ones that look like knee high stockings. No seams, no loose threads. But these days she buys her own. The problem is when they're little and can't explain what the problem is. And then the sensory overload comes in and they erupt.

Oh and she was like this from birth. Forget all those mobiles and graphics and bunny borders. Slept in a stark white room with low lights for years. Because it helped to have a place with zero stimulation to calm down in.

Okay Pixiedust Kitten... we have a problem! lol I was the princess and the pea! Now I have had this arguement before... with three women on one site because we all were the sensitive princess. So it ened up having to figure out who was the oldest to see who was the original princess! lol I lost that round! [sm=tantrum.gif] My brother once wanted to test me. He put a bb gun under my mattress. I tossed and turned all night! I got up mad and lifted my bed and found that darn gun! He was lucky I didn't hit him with it. I did however go and shot off all his bb's!

Would bathing in the oatmeal stuff help with the itch?

I found the best sheets for me were tee shirt material sheets. They just don't last as long as I would like them too. Flannal was next but they knot up. I have tried upper end sheets to lower end and the best for me is the tee shirt type.  I cannot have a wrinkle in the sheets either, but my feet have to be free, no tucking in the top sheet or my toes will be so sore I can hardly walk.

And... socks suck! lol

What some of these kids go through is heartbreaking! As parents its frustrating sometimes, but don't you just ache for them some days?

i just turned 46, Miss Lockit, and if you wanna take the title, you just go on with your bad self.  [:D]

right now i have 550 thread count sheets on, and i like them pretty well.  they need to go through the wash a couple dozen more times though, i think.  not quite soft enough.

and i hate that you can put a king top sheet on a queen bed, but there isnt anything you can do about a king bed to get bigger top sheets unless you sew 2 twin top sheets together!  (and yep, i've done THAT too.  damn those bed hogs that take all the covers!

tshirt sheets are great IF you can find them.  and king ones are hard to find, at least in my experience.  [:)]

most days, Lockit. But i try to hide the tears, because the amazing thing is while we hurt for them, they have absolutely no self pity.

I am very excited. This weekend the movie Adam opens in theaters. Its a love story about a cosmopolitn woman and her her neighbor. An attractive but socially inept young man named Adam. The character Adam has Aspergers syndrome. I am taking my son and we will talk about it. Then I am dragging him to see Julie and Julia. [:D]

We received the diagnosis for our son this morning. He has Autism and Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Damn. Just..damn [:(]

Hey.....................you're goddamn lucky that you got that diagnosis..........if the doctor would have said nothing is wrong..........you'd be totally fucked!!!!!!!!!!!!! (hope you laughed).

Let me tell you a little something Holly (and Sir too).  If fucking parenting was easy, everyone would do it.

Remember when said carpet commando was being born and you had that thought in the back of your mind at night when  you stood over cc's crib and thought, boy it's so frail........I hope it is breathing in the morning (no sids, no sids, no sids (my lesbian mother impression)).

Well, you got through that, and you will get through this...all of youse.
