I have no idea where you're coming up with this.

Two scenarios:

1.  Man has conflict with man.  Man takes it up privately with man and they deal with it.  Either someone's ass is beat or it is talked out, and conflict is resolved. Man comes home and tells woman about it.  It's done, over, no drama, move on.

2.  Man has conflict with man.  Both men publicize it, involving everyone they know.  Chests are thumped. Insults are flung.  Audience takes sides. Everyone starts arguing with everyone. Circus is formed.  Woman is unimpressed.  Men would have been better off had they simply walked away (or had opted for Scenario 1).

Of course, at this point in the thread, the fact is that there is a good chance that NO ONE is impressed, male or female.

Wow! I've often wondered what it must be like to be able to trace one's family history back to fossils in the ground but I never thought I'd be able to ask someone on these boards.

I’ve been told, in order to trace your ancestry back further than a single generation requires the ability to form coherent thought.

That's true and a good point, thank you for pointing this out to me.

I couldn't agree more. Though I do have to seriously wonder what the reaction would be if one such as myself, who strongly defends my sense of right and honor, decided to seriously throw myself into a contest? Somehow I doubt many would see strength either brawn or of character in one such as I.

Well, then they were not really looking.

-fast reply-

There seems an unusually large consensus around here that men with broad physical might capable of facilitating their strength are viewed as immature and intellectually inferior.

Well, if that's true, it's only because they never noticed your posts - especially the ones in Politics. For my money, you're one of the sharpest knives in this particular drawer. People who let the biceps deceive 'em are missing out on some pretty astute insights and observations. Just sayin'.

Women TEND to like men who they feel they can protect them,  HOWEVER, when those men get set to fight another male, they TEND to want them to walk away.  Now this could be simple observer bias on my part as perhaps that is the women I am with but I wonder if the men who aren't backing down are alone verses a male who is accompanied by a mate.

Hypothesis:  In our evolutionary past, females select males on the basis of their physical prowess which is often related to their ability to provide.  Fighting with another male risks injury which would reduce her mates ability to provide.  So, while they pick males for their aggressive nature, they seek to harness and direct it so as to maximize long term potential for the males ability to provide.

I don't recall seeing that behavior among primates but that isn't my field of expertise.  Interesting thought however.

While I agree, Michael, that a lot of women like to see men get all stirred up and then try to talk them down.
I'm not one of them.  I want a partner who is both willing and able to tear a threat or foe to shreds on my behalf should the need arise.  Having been partnered with someone who looked like he had the 'stuff' yet didn't was actually anxiety provoking.
Soooo, I'm agreeing that a lot of people give their partner mixed messages.
I, in the regard you stated and quite broadly, am not one of them.
Mixed messages do not make for effective communication.
And, just so we're clear, if you and Leonidas make this fight happen, I'll be there, and I'll be looking forward to blood.
