A month ago, I saw Emo Phillips make ethnic jokes...

"I last played Denver in 1995.  After the show, I asked when they'd want me back.  They said they'd ask me back when a black man was elected President."

"My next door neighbor is Cuban and she speaks Cuban.  That's a lot like Spanish but with fewer words for luxury items."

"A friend came over from Germany to visit, and we took him out to a deli.  He liked the bagels and said he couldn't get bagels that good back home.  I asked him, 'And whose fault is that?'"

And nobody was offended.

Willbeur, please explain what you meant about Bell Labs and Sandia and the profit motive.  I can't follow, especially because Sandia is funded by government money, isn't it?

Sandia is a department of DoE, but it was managed by ATT using Bell Labs trained personnel. It was the Bell Labs culture of innovation that I was attempting to highlight, but did a poor job of. A better example would have been Bellcore/Telcordia.

To be honest, willbe, I never though much of Sandia Labs.  I once saw their solar energy exhibition, and the cables that fed power to it were monster sized.  I thought "What the hell?  Solar energy is supposed to GENERATE power, not suck it up!"

Bell Labs - IIRC, they created the transistor.  They've got a helluva distinguished legacy.

Are those research labs still getting decent funding?  I assume it would have been cut back, especially after Bell got broken up.

The difference being that he didn't use any slurs and think it was funny. Innuendo is an art :)

we've gotten stuck on the political correctedness bs.
We have to be too careful not to offend anyone. I am not disrespectful to anyone becaues of race but if someone is waiting for me to pull some pc...they'll be a long tiem waiting.
black is black...white is white...mexican is mexican...cuban is cuban etc.

which reminds me, a few years back I either read or heard an article discussing how eventually there will be no simple "american".  Its fascinating how many people from different ethnicities migrated to the US for a better life, the american way of life and american dream. Parents worked hard to ensure that their children fit in with the "american" children and now we are all so hell bent to be separated from just being american. I'm all for diversity and being proud of one's heritage but...good grief.

Of course you should go to the soul food restaurant.
Let us know, how you like the food!

Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe. Any suggestions?

That's not the most inspiring menu but you would be hard pressed to go wrong with fried chicken. Before you order the sides ask some questions, are the greens cooked with ham and/or garlic (if not either don't get them). If you get the greens ask for pepper sauce (green peppers in vinegar mostly not tobasco) for them.

And don't worry about going in. I'm a southerner by birth and go to soul food places all the time and no body cares.
