US influence around the world is definitely under threat but a sharp decline is not inevitable.

I suppose this means that the vile stench of McDonalds will be lingering for a while to come ?

The Germans used to say the same about the English - that our commercial and materialistic outlook had ruined European civilisation and WW1 was a fight on behalf of German Kultur. It depends upon what you want to see really.

I think the question is wrong. It should not be will the US fall, but will the liberal-democratic western civilisation fall. The US is only the latest leader of that general civilisation.

Most of what has gone before was hardly liberal though.

Well, this would be taking the topic off on a tangent, whilst I have PLENTY of observations on the English "outlook" [sm=evil.gif] [;)] ... we adjourn that for another day ?

So I will stay on track ... what I want to SEE is not particularly relevant to if the USA will fall.

What I want to SMELL however ... less of the vile pollution exuded from the extractor vents of McDonalds' , basically!

Ahhhh ... but what exactly delineates "western" ? (the so called "prime meridian" I guess)(I'm sure it could be construed, therefore, as a favourite empire builder type  word ?) .... and furthermore, given the US uses of the term in recent history, someone want to tell me what's so fucking civilised about it ?

'What makes a country great and strong? I think it is local resources. We could, if we had to, survive on our own... We have coal, oil, food, iron, transportation, and industry'

Bad example. Coal, oil and iron are non-renewable resources, not to mention the coal and oil reserves of the US are dwindling. Hence the dependence on foreign sources such as saudi arabia. I never really understood this logic given that canada has the larges oil reserves in the world (northern alberta) which would make it simple to just buy the oil in north america and wash their hands of the middle east - at least as far as oil goes. I just assumed it was more to do with wanting to control those resources themselves.

Getting to the point though, the US will likely not be the world leader forever. Things change, nothing lasts forever. Do you really think in 10,000 years the US or the world will still be in the same political situation it is now? That may be a bad example given that by then I assume there will be at least a few colonized planets and therefore the balance of power would shift more toward planetary politics rather than country-based politics and power. A little in the future but you get the idea.

So in short, yes eventually the US will cease to be the world leader it is now. It most likely will not happen anytime soon but it will happen. Though I doubt it will be in the same manner of the Roman Empire. There were many different reasons that Rome fell and in the manner in which it did. I'm more inclined to believe that it will be suplanted by another world power. China, Japan, Russia or something along those lines.
