Is there a connection? And what are other risks involved?

Also, does anyone know anything about the dangers of a hep shot if one has a yeast allergy?

Yeast allergy? I can see a possible problem with an egg allergy since that's how virus shots are cultivated

A nurse i once spoke to said if someone has a yeast allergy they should not get these shots. But she did not provide anymore information than that.

Not 100% sure of this, but I think that they recommend that IF you have a yeast infection...they ask that you wait before getting the shots because it can make it worse.

You are referring to the series 3 shots right?

ownedgirlie -> RE: Hepatitis and "scat play" (2/21/2006 6:56:14 PM)

Yes, that is what i am referring to, and thank you. She didn't seem to be exactly sure of it.

The Hep B vaccine is synthesized by Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Bakers Yeast, not eggs as most vaccines are. So if you have a yeast allergy, you cannot recieve it.

Back in the early 80's when the vaccination became available only to those of us working in a high risk patient population, there were two options, the yeast vaccine or a live virus vaccine. Due to the advent of the AIDS virus, most of the health care professionals I know chose the yeast form. As it was possible that a live virus form could be contaminated with the AIDS virus. I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe the ceased giving the live virus form in the US in the late 80's, early 90"s. It is still available in some countries, but not the US.

edited to add: Hep B is spread predominantly by semen, vaginal secretions, blood, urine and feces... so yes, there is a good risk of infection if you participate in scat play with an infected partner. Hep B is 100 times more infectious than AIDS, and the virus is able to live outside the body for a long period of time, where as the AIDS virus is rather weak when removed from it's host and dies within minutes.

Thank you for this information. i wonder if it depends how bad the allergy is. i suppose one could get tested.

Do you know of any connection between the use of scat with somebody and the contracting of Hepatitis?

maybemaybenot -> RE: Hepatitis and "scat play" (2/21/2006 8:02:13 PM)

I edited my above post to answer that for you, ownedgirlie... [:D]

ownedgirlie -> RE: Hepatitis and "scat play" (2/21/2006 8:07:23 PM)

Thank you! So i gather from that, that the party would have to have hep to begin with, in order to transfer it (or any other disease for that matter). i have heard so many different things on this subject, and am trying to sort the pieces. i appreciate the knowledge you are sharing.

maybemaybenot -> RE: Hepatitis and "scat play" (2/21/2006 8:18:15 PM)

Yes, they would have to have it to transfer the virus. Please be aware Hep B is an asymptomatic disease for some time. Meaning after initial infection you feel fine and dandy and no illness. So one can spread the disease without even knowing. Personally, I do not engage in any sort of fluid exchange unless the person has tested clean for this and other STDs. And I have had the vaccine, just won't chance it.

And your very welcome for the info. If you need more info on this, just let me know, here or in e mail.[:)]

[Bowing with respect] Good question; excellent answer. Now this is a perfect reason for this sort of website to exist

Thank You, JohnWarren ! That is a very, very nice compliment.

I agree, and it's a shame that they have to keep these kind of questions here. Personally, this is the kind of things that newcomers should be reading, and yet, I doubt very much that they visit the health forum.

I'm not disputing anyone's information as I have no idea, but I do have yeast allergy and I have had Hep B shots without any effects. Perhaps they're cultivated differently here in Oz - or the yeast is inactive.

Ya made me do a little international research there, wetsub. lol. Seriously. tho, I would not want to give out erroneous info in regards to health.

Austrailia uses the same vaccine as is used in the US. I am including a link from the Austrailian Dept. of Health and Aging. I read it thoroughly and do not see any reference to people with yeast allergies being ineligable for it. But it is a yeast vaccine.

I do not know Austrailian protocols, but in the US you are advised against it if you have a yeast allergy.

I am merely speculating here from past experience with allergies in general. Allergic reactions manifest in different ways. EX: rash, nausea/vomiting, itching and anaphylaxis.
Sometimes an MD will examine the risk vs benefit of giving a drug to some one with a known allergy based on the severity of the reaction. For example if some one becomes nauseous from a drug, but that drug is imperitive, they will get the drug and treat the symtoms of the allergy with another drug.

Thanx for reminding me that this is an international site, and different standards exist.

edited to add: I found an Austrailian drug manufactuer that produces mammilian cell vaccine for Hep B, which could be used for those with yeast allergies. I am assuming, since it is an Austrailian company, that the product is used in Austrailia. So perhaps this one is the one you recieved if your MD was aware of your allergy.
