Yeah, he's an "only child" which makes it harder (on both of us).

He's a huge shedder, too.  I clean the furniture daily, and keep a roller brush in my home and in my car.  White fur, too...a bit challenging on those days I wear black.  [:D]

Yeah, I know what you mean. Angel is solid white and I have to watch out for white fur on all my dark-colored clothes. But then, Misty is solid black, so I have to watch out for black fur on all my light-colored clothes. In other words, I'm on the lookout for cat fur on my clothes every day, LOL.

OK, my kittehs are spolied, but dayum....not like that!!!!!!  Yes, leaving the faucet dripping for the one who wouldn't drink out of a water bowl, I can see that.....kittehs have their idiosynracies too, but feeding treats at an appointed time?  Brushing one between so and so time?  Closing doors?  uh-uh, no way......all my beebees have full acess to every room in the house, no one has a special one, even tho Smooch will still try to attack Squeaks.  She's learned to stand up for herself and hit back.

But honestly....we all kowtow to our kittehs......think about it.  How many "little" things do you do for them?  We are simply staff......but at least they appreciate us a little!

Yeah, I thought that list was pretty funny. It went on and on with special things the pet sitter had to do for the cats...and the dogs....and the horses. I felt sorry for that pet sitter. He or she must have been at her house for a couple of hours every evening to get everything done that was on the list.

I do like to pamper the kittehs, but try to keep it within reason. My friends who are "non-cat" people think they are spoiled rotten, but when I hear about the things other people do for their cats, I would say I'm more middle-of-the road.

Oh that's hilarious!!  I've told the Mister I should bring home a black cat and even things out.  He says "Ah....No."  [8D]

Btw, my hair stylist, who has cats and dogs, says it's not fur, it's "accessories."  We're simply accessorizing.  Ha - I love that.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: What is your cat doing? (8/19/2011 6:56:02 AM)

After I got da Boyz, I called my daughter & said I'd forgotten about the cat hair. She said, "You mean you didn't co-ordinate the colors of the cats with your clothes??" Uh, no...I have a lot of black clothes, it seems & these guys are orange & white. *sigh*

There's a very cute book we used to have called Cat Hair Everywhere. And it's so true! My friend was here helping me clean & he kept brushing them off his face. LOL

However, I got my deep red area rug for my living room BEFORE I brought the white long haired boy home. I vacuum a lot now lol.

cat is very tired..  was upstairs came down when she heard me in the kitchen.

soul2share -> RE: What is your cat doing? (8/19/2011 7:45:34 PM)

Add me to the list of cat hair coordinators.  I have black, gray, white, brown and actual striped cat hair.  Which pretty much covers the spectrum of my clothing.  And I swear, when I end up covered in hair, it's ONLY the stuff that will be seen.....ie, white on black, black on white, gray on everything!  It's like they KNOW which color to shed!

And no matter where they are when I'm getting ready to go out, if I make the mistake of laying the clothing out on the bed, I come back to find at least 2 of them on the clothes!

But here's one better....has anybody ever stepped on a shedded whisker?  Those suckers are total pins!  I've done it, and jammed the follicle end into my foot.....seriously into my foot!  Next time you find one, poke the end with your fingertip...it's like a fricking goose quill!

dovie -> RE: What is your cat doing? (8/19/2011 8:55:07 PM)

Gabriel and I are having problems. He's taken to waiting until I'm asleep, scratching me and then running off and hiding.  I have sleep apnea and use a CPAP. Initially, I thought it was because of my breathing...thought he may be thinking I'm not breathing and scratches me to wake me up. However, I've woken up a few times and he's stalking me like, ready to pounce. I don't have a bedroom door, however, that's going to be corrected this week. For now, I have to put him in the bathroom when it's time to sleep. Gabe is a Siamese and oh my goodness, he craves attention all the time. If he could sit on my shoulders as I go through the day, he would. He follows me from room to room, etc. I can't read a book, work on papers or talk on the phone. I love my baby, but I think I need the cat whisperer.

Any ideas, thoughts, recommendations. Is there a cat whisperer on this thread?

Thanks,
dovie

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: What is your cat doing? (8/19/2011 9:39:29 PM)

Male cats tend to require a lot more attention than females do. I've actually trained a few cats & my daughter's even better at it; she taught a cat to fetch & to ring a bell when he wanted to go outside. For the most part, I think that people don't believe that cats' behavior can be changed, so they don't even try. I use firmness & consistency. After I got da Boyz, Booga would jump up on the bed with me & bump my hand when I was trying to take my meds. I taught him within a few days that when I snapped my fingers & pointed & said his name, he was to go the direction the finger was pointing. He'd go to the end of the bed & when I was ready to have him back up near my head, I'd call him back & reward him.

They understand voice commands as well as dogs do. Just like when I train dogs, I don't ever raise my voice. Yelling at a furry pet doesn't generally get one what one wants from them. And just like with dogs, I get them to do what I want them to do to please me. I threaten to beat them all the time & promise that "this time I really mean it", but they don't have a clue what the words mean, they just hear the tone of my voice, which is loving.

I always recommend that if someone doesn't want to spend a lot of time petting & paying attention to a cat, they should get a female. I love the males; I love them following me around & giving me head bumps & looking all gooey-eyed at me. I leave the bathroom door open when I use the toilet, because that's one of the times they like to come get petted. If I can help at all, please cmail or call me, Miss Dovie. I'll do what I can.

Aw thanks, otter!  Your kitty is beautiful and what a great hang-out place she has!

dovie Viktor used to do that a lot - the whole pounce, bite/scratch, and run thing.  I feared he was getting more aggressive so I did a lot of Googling on cat behavior.  What I learned was really simple.  Establish being boss of the house by paying attention to when he normally plays (he has a collection of mice he likes to bat around), and then about 5 minutes before he's "scheduled" to do that, initiate play with him myself.  Then decide when play is over.  I also started to read his body language and facial expressions, to predict when he might pounce-n-run, and I snap my fingers near his face and say "No" rather firmly when I see this, or I just scoop him up and lay him on his side, with my arm gently holding him (in dog-whisperer "calm submissive" fashion).  In fact, periodically I lay him down like that just for kicks, as a reminder of who's boss.

When he does do the pounce-n-run, I've gotten to the point where I'm able to catch him in mid pounce, and yep - down he goes, in the lay-down-on-your-side-with-your-head-down" position, with a "No" and then I make sure my energy is really calm. I keep him like that until he starts purring.  I don't give him a lot of attention or talk to him much when I'm holding him like that - just a "good boy" about every 30 seconds or so. I probably keep him in that position for about a minute or two.  If I can't catch him mid-pounce, I do go after him, not in an irritated way, and not saying anything to him. I just follow him and pull him from his hiding, and down he goes lol.

Where he used to do this every night, now it's maybe once a week, at most. I make sure I have "calm energy" with him.  I also never let him bite, even play-bite.  When he does, I snap my fingers and say "No" and if he doesn't stop I peel his mouth away, then hold him and reassure him, saying "That's better."  I have had to pry his mouth away before, as he latches on tightly even with play bites.  Now I say "No" and he lets go, and I praise him to the hilt.

I also keep canned air near the bed. He likes to meow at one of my pictures when I'm sleeping, so I spray the air. He also used to hop on my dresser and knock things off (to get my attention) so a spray of the air has stopped that.

I hope some of this helps. I've noticed a remarkable difference in his behavior just from these simple actions.

soul2share -> RE: What is your cat doing? (8/20/2011 7:06:19 PM)

This is KB tempting fate.......he's fallen in once or twice before, but the fact that the water's running into the tub doesn't stop him from investigating!

He has a real nose problem.....when the AT&T guys were here to fix the phone and Iwebz, he was head down/tail up in their open toolbags every chance he got.  He sticks his head in every bag, purse and carrying bag that comes into the house.  The groceries get the most inspection......looking for nip or treats!
