The Station Agent for me was a portion of a life. It wasn't a story perse it wasn't about a Climax to an end it was about the way people are seen and how we react to that which is usually seen as different.

What I really liked is that the only person who didn't treat him different or take any time becoming comfortable around him was the little black girl.

Yes the film is Plot Lite but so are many of the Shoot'em'up Movies we live for.

The Station Agent left me with a portrait of the life of someone who lives in struggle from being little, or losing a child or simply wanting to just fit in and be accepted.

The only reall Hollow part I saw in the film is that it felt the need to address his size in the bar scene, I do not think it was necessary I felt it was just to predictable, however it was the only predictable part of Peter Dinkledges character.

The Machinist with Christian Bale, what he did for his craft is amazing, he played a man so mentally tormented (not insane, something tragic happened in his life) that he looked like an escapee from a concentration camp. I saw this before he did Batman and the physical differences gave me a very high respect for how he approaches acting. It was quite painful to watch at times (which is how it was supposed to be) but i very highly recommend it.

Btw, if anyone missed The Illusionist -- this is a must see movie. Excellent in every way.

EquilibriuI really didn't want to watch this film, but I did and wow what a film, Bale was great sadly purcell missed out he was suppose to play the lead. The machineist I have seen mentioned is also very good, Bale had a lucky escape after playing bateman in American Psycho, where he really was carp......nuff said.

Grand Torino was -such- a good movie!

12 Angry Men I was totally surprised by, I thought it'd be boring as heck.

Same with Glengarry Glenross.  Bunch of guys talking in one room? Booooring. (actual fact it is one of my favourite movies now)


Wait. Cher was in the Mask?!

Hmm ok, some others that have very pleasantly surprised me over the years:

U571...If you like war movies

Chocolat...It's slow moving and odd in parts...but overall, well worth watching if you can make it to the end

Gone Baby Gone

Swinging Doors...a nice twist on 'alternate realities'

Evita ( I actually saw the stage performance when I was like 11; but I thought Madonna's performance was very good )

Ohhhhhhhhhh AND who can forget

ALL the Prirates of the Carribean movies...they totally rocked

The first Pirates movie actually surprised me quite a bit.  Though I had not much of an idea what storyline they'd use, what the characters would be like, anything.  All I knew was that it involved skeleton pirates.

Man I love Disney.

I pick "Titanic" too....the same as Greedytop....I didn't see it till a year or more after it was out as I thought I would hate that type of movie as I thought it would be very mushy and kind of like "The Poseidon Adventure". Then a  friend at work gave it to me on two VHS tapes as it was a long movie and this was before DVD players or they were just new.i forget now.....and I was all emotional and loved the movie and even watched it a few times when it was on TV after that...back then movies didn't come on TV so fast after they had been released as we all know.[:)]

Edited to add: I just thought of another movie I never thought I would like and the first time I saw it was when it was on TBS or TNT..."The Shawshank Redemption"....Loved it and it became one of my top 20 movies...maybe even top 10.

I can't say I've had too many pleasant surprises. I usually won't watch a movie that I'm not already pretty certain I'm gonna like. Most of my surprises have been watching a movie I think is going to be good and then it turns out not to be[&o] and there's too many of those to list.

One pleasant surprise that I had recently was from "The Uninvited." I thought it was going to be pretty mediocre actually but loved the twist ending. Master was even impressed. He almost always figures 'em out but not that one[;)]

G.I. Joe --Thought it would utterly betray the cartoon show from my childhood.  It was quite different, but I felt it was ultimately faithful.

Mr. Brooks  --I didn't think a movie where Kevin Costner played a serial killer could work.  It did.  It also has one of the most bone chilling scenes I've ever witnessed.

The Number 23:  Not amazing, but certainly not the worst thriller I've ever seen.

Fight Club:  I didn't watch it until recently.  I always thought it would be absolutely ridiculous.  I was right, but it was ridiculous in a really awesome way.

Preaching to the Perverted:  I was surprised that such a seemingly beloved movie could be so mind-numbingly boring, offensive, and unfunny.

The King of Kong:  I was surprised that a documentary about Donkey Kong could turn into an epic struggle between good and evil.  I mean really, it was an amazing documentary.

Nor is this an elite list. They're old movies, and some lesser known ones.

If I come across them, I'll take Steel's recommendation and watch them.

But it's also why I'm not suggesting many excellent foreign films.



It was the claim that none of us knew them attached to the list that smacked to me of elitism, and yes indeed many of them are wonderful films, because I have seen some, it is naff all about mediocrity it is more about the way in which they were presented.

Actually I said what I said because most of them were straight to Video Releases or Viewed at Canes or Other Indie Film Outlets.

Not that I knew more about movies than other people.

I worked in a Block buster for a few years and watched some 300 films I never even knew existed.

Many I didn't know for good reason others there just wasn't the budget for a hollywood bash.

Lilly I find it funny that at times you serioulsy think the worst of me without finding out what I really meant. It is starting to make me wonder if you just want to dislike me for no reason.

Sorry if I misunderstood you steel, and no it isnt about wanting to dislike you at all. Just in Britain father goose for example is a massively famous film. I appologise for misreading your intent.

And yes Father Goose would be very populart in the UK.

However due to the age of the film most people my own age in the US don't know who Cary Grant is let alone the Movie Father Goose that was in my opinion one of his best.

I agree with Steel regarding The Station Agent. I would have never went to see it on my own, but a friend was watching it one night, and yep, very good movie.

30 Days of Night has was a top line horror movie. When we went to see it, my expectations were low -- but it was the best horror movie I'd seen since THE RING.

Okay just watched this one tonight.

Anyone remember Donnie Darko...... Yeah AWSOME FUCKING MOVIE.

Did you know there was a Sequal?

It is about his sister and what happens to her 7 years later.

Do not expect a movie like Donnie Darko you will be let down, but if you watch for all the little easter eggs in the movie like the names of places, the names of the movies showing, the parts of the book they deal with in this movie.

I was to say the least impressed because I was planning on being let down, SERIOUSLY LET DOWN, I was truely Surprized.

Again it was a Straight to Video Movie and I am not sure how popular it was because the only people who would go looking for it would be Donnie Darko Nuts.

Anyway it was a GREAT movie. E-Mail me if you wanna discuss the movie afterward.

P.S. I Love You
Totally expected it to be a cheesy romantic comedy... wasn't so much.  Laughed, cried and laughed, repeat, repeat, repeat.  It was exhausting to watch, but very good. 

No Reservations
Again, expected a romantic comedy, but I think it gave a much more accurate portrayal of the situation than other movies of the type would have.  A bit darker than expected. 

Recommend them both!
